The apartment was quiet. There were no demons, no vampires, no mummies, no werewolfs, no wiccas, no worries, and most important, no slayers. No, there was just quiet in the little apartment belonging to a Mr. and Mrs. Summers.
Angel and Buffy slept with dreams. They dreamt of their life and each other. Angel's arm was around Buffy's small waist, and Buffy's arm rested on Angel's broad chest. Her fingers moved up and down on her husband's chest in a rhythmic beating.
Buffy's eyes fluttered open, resting her green eyes on the man next to her. She smiled, watching him breath. In. Out. In. Out. She lifted a manicured nail to his lips, tracing their outline. He smiled in his sleep, and Buffy gave a little chuckle.
He woke up, and smiled, without opening his eyes. He tightened his arms around Buffy. She started tracing the rest of his features, pausing to give him an occasional kiss. She yawned after a couple moments, and put her head back into his shoulder. Angel placed his head on top of hers, and together they drifted back to sleep.
Angel once again woke up, this time getting out of bed. He walked out of the bedroom wearing his usual sleeping attire, sweatpants. After using the bathroom to splash some water on his face, he watched his love sleep. After a sigh of contentment, Angel walked into the tiny hallway. He turned right and walked past the small family room and breezed into the kitchen.
He took a glass from the cabinet and poured himself some orange juice. After pausing to stretch, he finished the juice. The glass was placed in the sink and Angel retreated back to the bedroom to put on something close to clothes. Some jeans and a tee shirt.
He slipped out of the apartment to the coffee shop not far from the building. Angel purchased two lattes and let himself back into the apartment. He set the coffees on the table and walked back into the bedroom. He was careful getting back into the bed, not wanting to wake Buffy just yet. It didn't work. She opened her eyes to once again see the handsome man in front of her.
"Hiya stranger," she said.
"Hello, good morning."
"Mmmm, morning," she closed her eyes again.
Angel leaned over and kissed her, sweet and innocent. Buffy smiled and wrapped her arms around his neck.
"I like Sundays," she told him.
"So do I," he agreed.
"Want to get up?"
Buffy thought about it, "I don't know, what time is it?"
Angel checked the clock, "Nine thirty-five."
"It's too early," Buffy wrinkled her nose.
"Come on, I got coffee ready for ya."
She stared at Angel, not sure what he was up to. He usually slept almost as late as she did on Sundays. What was he doing being almost dressed.
Buffy noticed her clothes, "And what are you doing being almost dressed?"
"Couldn't sleep?" he offered.
"Sure, whatever," she grinned. "Help me up?"
"Of course."
Angel came to her side of the bed and picked her up.
"Angel!" she shrieked.
"What? You wanted some help getting out of bed. So that's what I did, helped you."
She laughed, bringing a smile to his face. He carried her to the family room, and sat on the couch, her now in his lap.
"Coffee?" she asked.
"Yes mam, be right back," he got up, and Buffy picked up the remote.
When Angel returned he carried the two lattes he had bought.
"Oh!" Buffy said, "since when do lattes count as regular coffee?"
"Uhhhh."
Buffy giggled, "So what's the occasion?"
"Think," Angel replied taking up a spot on the couch.
"Uhhh...," Angel chuckled causing Buffy to say quickly, "no, wait, lemme think."
Angel started humming the birthday song. Buffy sat there, sipping her coffee, looking very much in thought.
"I give up," she said at last.
"Buffy, you know this, look at the calendar."
Buffy's eyes widened. "My birthday!"
"Uh huh," Angel nodded.
"Awww, you remembered."
"You thought I would forget?" Angel looked mock-hurt.
"Well, no, but that you remember, that was so sweet."
"And so did everyone else, we are to go to your mother's today for a party."
"Oh yeah, I forgot that," she stopped her self. "Wow, little Miss Forgetful today, aren't I?"
Angel smiled, "Well I guess we can forgive you for that, simply because it is your birthday."
"Thanks."
"Here's a chance to redeem yourself. What time are we going to be at your mother's house?"
Buffy glanced at the ceiling before replying, "Twelve?"
"Yes, good girl."
"Well I try," she pointed out.
Angel stood, "And now for the birthday breakfast request."
"Eggs and toast."
"Done," and he left to make the breakfast, bringing his coffee with him.
Buffy sat on the couch, watching The Price is Right. She heard the banging of pots and pans, and smiled to herself. She thought of how lucky she was to get Angel. A man that can cook, not bad. Also a man that loves her unconditionally, not bad either.
"Come on down," Angel heard Buffy say when he walked back into the room.
"Breakfast is ready Bob," he told her.
"Okey dokey."
The breakfast was eaten in between kisses and sounds of, "mmmmm."
After breakfast, Buffy took a shower and got dressed. Angel cleaned up, well as much as he could without using the water. When Buffy was done showering, he cleaned the dishes with actual water. Angel strolled into the room, grabbing a clean pair of clothes before taking a shower himself.
They hopped into Angel's car and drove to the Summer's house. The lamp post was decorated with balloons, and a couple cars were pulled in the driveway. Angel parked the car along side the curb. He helped Buffy out of the car, holding the door open and taking her hand.
"Thank you mister," she kissed his hand and walked with him, hand in hand, to the front door.
Buffy opened the door, and walked inside.
"Hey Buffy!" Xander called out as he walked to her.
"Hey Xander," Buffy hugged him.
"Hello Xander," Angel shook his hand.
"Hey dead boy," Xander joked, taking his outstretched hand.
Angel smiled, he had finally gotten used to the nickname. Actually he liked it now, it seemed to fit him still, even after the whole human thing.
"And a 'Happy Birthday' to the Buff."
"Why thank you Xander. Where is everyone else?"
"They are outside, come on," he took her hand and led her to the backyard.
On their way outside the stopped in the kitchen, Buffy said her hello to Cordy and Doyle. Doyle was putting chips in a big bowl and Cordy was stirring the dip. Angel struck up a conversation with Doyle as Buffy and Xander kept walking.
Outside Willow and Oz were putting up a banner that read, 'Happy Birthday Buffy'. Buffy laughed at the banner kept falling on Willow's side. Finally Will climbed down the ladder and stared at the sign. It moved up to where it should be. She climbed back up and put a big piece of tape to keep the sign up where it should be.
"Hey Will, Oz," Buffy called out.
"Buffy!" Will hugged her. "Happy Birthday!"
"Thanks Will, I liked the way you got the sign to stick."
The red head blushed, and looked around for Oz.
"Hey," Oz greeted.
"Hey Oz," Buffy said.
"A Happy Birthday is in order, so Happy Birthday."
"Thanks, oh hey Anya."
"Hello, uhh, Happy Birthday."
"Thank you, and thank you for helping," Buffy hugged her.
Anya just shrugged, "Oh, I am not helping, I just followed Xander."
Buffy just kept smiling, after all it was her birthday. "Whatever, then uhh, thanks for coming."
"Sure," Anya made her way over to Xander.
"So, Buffy are you excited about today?" Willow asked, all red gone.
"Yeah, did you talk to Giles?"
"Uh huh, he called again to tell you happy birthday and that he was sorry that he isn't here, but ya know with Olivia and the baby..."
"Please, I would rather Giles be with them. After all Giles only has his first kid once."
"That's what we told him, he still said he was sorry."
The rest of the getting ready was a snap, everything was set and ready to be eaten, used, or looked at. The guest arrived by the carfuls. Buffy talked to all of her relatives and chatted with some other family members. Almost every member of Buffy's family lived within an hour, so almost everyone came.
Buffy had attached herself to Angel after awhile. she just wanted to be near him. Okay, well maybe she wanted to be with him because her cousins were looking him over. Buffy didn't like that too much. She kissed him whenever they were in front of her cousins.
It was about eleven when all the guests had left. The Scooby gang stayed to clean up as much as they could. At about twelve, everyone was starting to yawn. Before they left gifts were given. Buffy chuckled a bit at Xander and Anya's gift.
"A pet?" Buffy had asked, holding the box away from her. It wasn't that big, but it did have air holes.
"Yeah, Xander said you didn't have one," Anya told them.
Buffy slowly unwrapped it to find a pet rock. And a bottle of 'rock food'. Some CD's of music Buffy had never heard were included.
Willow and Oz had given her tickets to the No Doubt concert in two weeks. Will had also given the wonderful gift of protection and together they gave Buffy some clothes.
Cordy had given Buffy a huge supply of clothes. "You could use some designers," she had said.
Doyle had given her money and some movies. Buffy was glad to get some new movies, all they had back at the apartment were Disney and old comedies.
Her mother gave her some picture frames. One with a picture of Buffy with all her friends, even Giles, another with her and Angel, and finally one with Buffy and her mom.
The gang said their goodbyes and left the Summer's house. Angel took out his keys to open the door to their apartment, and he opened the door for her.
She smiled her thanks, and sat down on the couch. Angel disappeared into the dark hallway, reappearing moments later with two wrapped boxes.
"And these are for you," Angel placed them in her lap.
"Awww, you didn't have to," Buffy said.
"Yes I did," Angel argued.
"Okay," Buffy took the presents.
She unwrapped the first and found a huge box with many books in it.
"Thank you," she kissed him. While she didn't read that often, Angel read to her a lot. And she loved that.
The next box was small, and made a rattling sound when she shook it. She took the light blue paper and opened the box. Inside was a key.
"What's this?" she asked.
"A key."
"I see that, a key to what?"
"A house," Angel said casually.
"What?" Buffy did a double take.
"Okay, well it doesn't lead to a particular house, but what I* was going for was a key to our future house."
Buffy was staring at him like he grew two heads.
"You mean..."
"We have enough money to go shopping for a house, and I thought that that would make a good birthday present."
Buffy leapt from her spot on the couch to hug Angel. She kissed him passionately, thinking about her and Angel's future house.
Angel broke the kiss, "So I take it you do want a house for your birthday?"
"This is the best birthday, I love you."
"I love you too."
"Thank you."
"You're welcome."
