The door to his office opened, showing the blond police officer. She walked up to his desk in a casual way and smiled at him. Angel put his book down and looked up to her.
"Yes?" he asked. He didn't like being interrupted in the middle of brooding/reading a book.
"I have a question for ya," she told him.
He motioned with his hand to 'go on'.
"Well you see my aunt has this cabin up north and she is loaning it to my cousin and I for the weekend. And I was wondering if you wanted to go?" she said, acting like she didn't care, but her eyes showed that she wanted him to go.
"I don't know," he got up and walked around his desk.
"My cousin said that he already was bringing someone, and well between us, it's like fights between brother and sister. We always try to outnumber each other. And I don't know if you know what I mean but--" she was interrupted by him cutting her off.
"I get it, but Kate, I mean me up at a cabin?"
"Well, please?" she looked as if she were about to cry. Pretty desperate. He thought about it. Cordy and Westley had been saying how he needed to get out more.
He tried to let out a breath, and bowed his head down, "Fine, when?"
"Cool," she said trying to sound cool, "uhh, this weekend, we will be meeting my cousin and his friend up there. So I'll pick you up at five Friday night."
"Yeah. Yeah," he sighed as he sat down. "What was I thinking," he thought aloud.
*~*
"Never forget," she mumbled in her sleep, tossing and turning.
Willow just watched concerned. For the past two weeks Buffy had started these dreams. She wouldn't tell Will what they were about, but the wiccan could only guess, Angel. It was always him. She just wished that Buffy would just forget, and move on. Riley seemed like a nice guy. A little annoying, but who wasn't? He and Buffy were, well Will couldn't really figure out what they were. If they were in a relationship or not.
She heard Buffy wimper again, and Will looked over to her best friend. Tears were falling down her face and she wispered that she'd never forget over and over. If only Will knew what she was talking about. If only.
*~*
"Buffy! Hey Buffy!" Riley shouted across campus.
Buffy grabbed Willow's hand and dragged her towards their dorm room as fast as she could.
"Buffy? What are you doing?" Will asked.
"I don't want to talk to him," she said through gritted teeth.
The red head stopped and turned to Buffy. She kept the slayer there until Riley joined them. He stopped and bent down, putting his hands on his knees. He was panting, trying to catch his breath.
"Hi (pant) Buffy (pant)," he said.
"Hey," she faked a smile.
"Listen, I was wondering if we could talk?"
Buffy looked at Will. Or she would have if Willow hadn't left as soon as Riley joined them. She now hid behind a nearby tree. Buffy sighed.
"Okay, what do we have to talk about?"
"My cousin and I were loaned my aunt's cabin for the weekend and I was wondering if you wanted to come with me?"
"Uhh, well, I don't know I mean, the weekend is a busy thing for me, and I uhh--" she was running out of excuses.
Will came out from behind the tree and was motioning that she should go. Buffy was trying to use any excuse that she hadn't already used on him, "Well, don't forget I do have to patrol and save the world and all that. And then there's that thing."
"What thing?" Willow asked.
Buffy's eyes pleaded, "That thing, you know, that thing."
"Oh, that thing, well don't worry, we can do that next weekend, you go have fun," she smiled.
Buffy slumped her shoulders, "Okay, Riley this weekend it is."
"Yeah! Well, I will pick you up Friday afternoon and we'll drive up there."
After he left Buffy spent the day glaring at Willow, hoping that the world would suck her in right then and there. This was going to be a weekend to remember.
*~*
"Are you ready Buffy?" Riley asked as the two of them sat in his car.
"Sure," she tried to smile, without success.
During the car trip Riley chatted about his cousin and how she said that she was bringing her boyfriend, when Buffy looked at him.
"Riley? You didn't tell your cousin that you and me were boyfriend and girlfriend did you?" Buffy demanded. After Riley said nothing, "Did you?!"
"Well, she made it sound like I was a loser if I didn't have a girlfriend, so I had to say something," he admitted.
"Riley, when we get there, what are you going to tell her?"
"I'll tell her that you and me are just close friends," he said, keeping his eyes on the road.
"Good," she said before looking out the window. Maybe this weekend could help her get her mind off Angel, or at least help her to think about him less.
*~*
"So he is like 'my girlfriend is the best', and doesn't that just annoy the hell out of you when someone else is bragging about what they have and what you don't?" Kate ran on.
"Sure," Angel said. He was wearing the Gem of Amara, thinking that he would probably need it for a weekend 'in the sun' as Kate had put it. He just hoped that he would be able to spend the weekend reading and enjoying some brooding in a dark room.
"Then I said 'yeah? well my... friend is probably nicer than your girlfriend--"
"Kate, you didn't happen to tell your cousin that we were... together, did you?" a disbelieving look creeping into his features.
"Well, yeah, I mean you should have heard him, he can be so annoying and so full of himself, that I had to say something..." she tried to justify herself.
"How about when we get to the cabin we tell him and his girlfriend the truth?" Angel suggested
"Fine," she grumbled.
*~*
Angel was outside while Kate fumbled for a key to the cabin. He had that weird feeling in the pit of his stomach, but ignored it. Kate was still trying to get the key in the lock while Angel looked around. He was surrounded by trees and water. That was about it. At least he would be far away from everything and everybody.
"There!" Kate exclaimed as she got the door open.
Angel stepped in. The cabin wasn't very cabin-ish. There was a TV, a microwave, fridge, oven, stove, and electric lights. The furniture was very woodsy. To the left was the family room, straight ahead was a long island for the kitchen, a small kitchen hallway next to the island, and the a countertop that had all the kitchen appliances. If you were to go farther back into the kitchen there was a table with four chairs.
Two of the chairs were occupied. A boy, Kate's cousin, got up to hug Kate. They hugged and then the boy shook hands with Angel.
"Riley Finn," he introduced himself.
"Angel," he shook his hand.
The girl who was seated at the kitchen table turned around. She had a look of pure shock on her face. Angel could hear her pulse beat faster and faster, and he was sure that if he had a pulse that it would probably be going as fast as hers was right then.
"Angel," Buffy whispered.
"Well, Kate, Angel, I would like for you to meet my friend, Buffy," he pointed to Buffy.
Kate looked over at Angel, who seemed to be wearing the same face as Buffy. Pure shock. She thought that that was kinda funny, but chose to ignore it and moved on.
"Wow, it's late," Riley said as he looked at his watch.
"Yeah, Buffy, Angel can I show you your room?" Kate asked.
Buffy and Angel looked at her, "You mean we are sharing a room?"
"Well, yeah, I mean, why not, oh, you guys probably feel awkward sharing a room with a complete stranger, but don't worry, it's only for two nights. You guys don't mind do you?" Kate asked.
"Guess not," Buffy muttered.
"Okay then," Kate clapped and took Buffy hand to lead her into the room.
Angel picked up his bag and saw Buffy reach for hers, he picked that up to.
"That's okay Angel," she said.
"I insist," he told her.
"Fine," she followed Kate.
The bed rooms were next to the kitchen table. Buffy and Angel's room was to the left and Kate and Riley's to the right. A bathroom was inbetween the rooms.
Kate showed Buffy and Angel their room and left them alone. "There's a dresser there, feel free to put anything in it. You know where the shower is, good night."
After she left Buffy and Angel looked at each other.
"So that's your girlfriend," Buffy whispered.
If Angel was human he wouldn't even have caught that, but he did. "No."
Buffy turned her head at that, "Riley said that she was your girlfriend."
"She said that, I told her to correct it when we got here."
"Oh."
There was a silence that was spent looking at the floor, ceiling, walls, and out the window.
"So that's your new boyfriend?"
"No."
Angel looked at her.
"He and I are just friends, Riley said that to Kate, cause of this whole big thing or whatever, so..."
"Oh," Angel look down to the ground.
"So, two of us, one bed," Buffy thought about the first time she had said that. Only four years ago, less if that. Amazing how much one can go through in only four years, one might say even three.
"I'll sleep on the floor, again," Angel offered.
"No, that's okay, we are both mature adults, we can handle it, right?" Buffy looked for assurance.
"Sure, why not?" Angel shrugged.
"Okay, I am going to go to the bathroom, get ready for bed you can change here I guess," Buffy said as she grabbed a bag and left the room.
Angel sat on the bed for a couple seconds then got ready for bed, wearing sweatpants and before he could put on a top Buffy walked in.
"Sorry," she mumbled an apology but didn't turn her head.
She was staring at his chest. He hadn't changed, not yet anyway. Still visually pleasant. But Angel was staring at Buffy too. She wore a spaghetti strap PJ top and short little boxer shorts. Angel's eyes drank in this sight. He missed her, that much was evident. It was at least five minutes later when they snapped out of it and turned their heads.
"Sorry," they said in unison, then chuckled lightly.
Buffy turned down the covers in the bed and climbed in. Angel didn't bother to put a tee-shirt on and just climbed in. He reached over and turned the light off. It was dark when Angel spoke again.
"Buffy?" he asked.
"Yeah Angel?" she asked.
He waited a short while before telling her what he was going to tell her, he missed hearing her say his name, and was enjoying the feeling when he shook his head and said, "Sometime we have to talk."
"Yeah, I know, but how about we leave it at this tonight?" she asked, not wanting to get into anything tonight.
"Sure, good night Buffy."
"Good night Angel."
Half way through the night, Buffy started having the dreams again, only this time Angel heard them, saw Buffy dream reaction to them and saw her shaken with sobs. He quickly took her in his arms and held her there. She instantly relaxed and feel back to a peaceful sleep. He settled back down and feel asleep, dreaming of better times with his love.
When morning came Buffy woke up to find herself in Angel's arms. She opened her eyes further and their situation came back to her. She started breathing a little faster and that woke Angel up.
Buffy mentally kicked herself, she loved being in Angel's arms, it was there that she felt safe and protected. Angel's eyes opened and looked into Buffy's. It took a second for him to remember where he was and then un-wrapped his arms. Buffy look disappointed for a moment, then she seemed to return back to normal.
"Talk later?" he asked.
"Yeah, but first..." she trailed off.
"Yes?"
"Do we want them to know that we already know each other?"
Angel shrunk back into the bed, Buffy was sitting up Indian style.
"I don't know, whatever you want to do."
"How about we tell them that we know each other from when I came to Sunnydale, and that's all we'll say?" Buffy asked.
"Sounds fine to me," he smiled.
She smiled back, Buffy missed seeing Angel's smile, missed just hearing his voice.
"Let's get something to eat," she said as she got out of bed.
"Sure," Angel said as he grabbed the ring off the dresser and walked out with Buffy.
"Morning sleepyheads!" Riley exclaimed as the two walked into the kitchen.
"Yeah, morning," Buffy yawned.
"You know Angel, you're really pale," Riley said as Angel sat down at the kitchen table.
Buffy eyes widened, it was really sunny out. She turned to Angel and saw that he was in the sunlight. He laid his hand on the table, showing the ring glistening in the sun. Buffy breathed a sigh of relief, then gave him an annoyed look.
"Uh, well, um," he looked at Buffy. She nodded her head.
"Well, Riley I am a vampire," Angel said plainly.
"A hostile?" Riley repeated.
"Yeah, but Riley, Angel's good, he has a soul," Buffy interjected.
"You know him?!" Riley said at the same time Kate was saying, "you know her?!"
"Yes," they said together.
"Angel and I met in Sunnydale, when I first moved there, we were- are good friends," Buffy explained.
"Oh, how are you in the sun then?" Riley asked.
Angel held up his hand, "This is the Ring of Amara, it allows immunity to any vampire that wears it."
"So, you guys were just friends?" Kate asked suspiciously.
"Yes," Angel said, avoiding eye contact, before grabbing a box of cereal of the counter and bringing it back to his seat.
"I thought vampires don't eat," Riley stated his thoughts.
Buffy rolled her eyes. Even she knew that vampires ate other things besides their usual liquid diet. She was wondering how this boy could even think that he knew about 'hostiles'. Or why Willow was trying to set them up.
"We do," he looked down, "eat other stuff."
"Oh," was all Riley said.
"So what are our plans today?" Buffy asked.
"Well, swimming and tubing and water stuff, you do know how to swim?"
"Yeah, yeah, I think I would have learned in two hundred and fifty years," Angel mumbled the last part, only Buffy heard him and she chuckled a bit at that.
"Well, do you guys want to shower this morning or tonight, considering that you'll be swimming today," Kate said.
"Tonight," Buffy and Angel agreed.
"Then let's go swimming!" Riley shouted as he ran out of the back door and from Buffy's spot next to the window, she saw him jump in the lake.
Buffy, Angel, and Kate finished breakfast and changed into their swimming suits. The three of them walked out of the house and jumped into the lake. Well Kate didn't, she said that she didn't want to go swimming just yet and spent the day sunning herself.
Buffy, Angel, and Riley splashed and enjoyed the morning, waving to the fellow members of the lake as they drove by on their boats. The high point in the morning, to Buffy anyway, was when Angel got up, picked Buffy up, and then tossed her into the lake. For the first time in a long time, she felt like they were a normal couple, though they weren't a couple at all.
They went inside around noon to eat lunch, sandwiches, and then spent the day playing volleyball in the water off the dock. Dinner was spaghetti and salad and the last hours of the day were spent watching the sun set from the dock, each of the four dipping their feet in the water.
Buffy showered that night and changed into her pajamas and sat down on the bed to read while Angel took his shower. He walked in their room later, wearing a pair of boxers. He smiled at her and grabbed a pair of sweatpants.
"What are you reading?" he asked her after he got under the covers.
"_Girl Interrupted_, it's pretty good."
"Oh. Well, I'm tired, what do you say we hit the hay?" Angel asked before laying down on the bed and closing his eyes.
"Sure, goodnight Angel."
"Goodnight," he said then whispered lightly, "beloved."
The next morning was very similar to the first, they ate breakfast and swam, but then it started raining after lunch and Buffy, Riley, and Kate played rummy for a short while before Buffy asked about Angel's whereabouts.
"He's outside, do you friends usually go out in the rain?" Kate asked.
"Uhh, maybe," Buffy said as she walked outside.
She saw Angel sitting in the hammock, clothes soaked, and eyes closed. He opened them as Buffy neared him.
"Hello," he said.
"Angel, what are you doing?"
"Thinking."
"Gosh, what?"
"Everything, this place, my life," he whispered again, "you."
"Think we should talk now?" she asked.
"Sure," he made room on the hammock, "hope you don't mind getting your clothes wet."
Buffy glanced down at her soaked self, "Not an issue."
"Angel, where are we here?"
"I don't know, Buffy. I just don't know."
"I miss you," Buffy said quietly.
"So do I, every day."
"Angel why can't we be together again?"
Angel looked into her eyes, "Because, I can't give you the normal things that---"
"But I don't want normal things anymore. I spent almost a year doing normal things and I don't want to anymore. For the past year everybody had been deciding what is right and normal for me, for once I want to make a decision in my life. I want to spend my time with you, forever. And I will chase you down until I am with you. Something I should have done when you first left."
Buffy quickly pressed her lips to Angel's, Angel couldn't find to the strength to resist Buffy's kiss, so he just went with her. Deep down she knew that somehow they had to make this work.
*~*
"I don't think they're just friends," Kate said through the window of the kitchen.
"No, I mean do most friends kiss, like that?" Riley asked.
"Maybe, but that's a Jenny Jones type of friendship, so..."
"Well, Buffy is weirder than most. Who knows?" Riley said.
*~*
"Ahhh, well this is nice," Buffy commented.
"Oh yeah, you gotta love prophecies," Angel said as he leaned back into his lawn chair. He and Buffy were up at their cabin enjoying the sunset. Angel's wedding band sparkled in the sun light. That was the only jewelry he wore. Buffy stretched out.
"Well, come on, you and your pale self should get inside," Buffy laughed.
"Guess we will have to see if this whole human thing takes, I mean, who knows?"
"Uh huh, no really, it's getting buggy, let's go."
"Okay, be right there."
Angel picked up a rock from the shore and threw it out as far as he could, he really could get used to this whole human thing.
