Summary: Buffy's first day on her ER rotation at County General.
Author's Notes: this is part 4. Angel will not be in this one as much, seeing as how Buffy's at work. I don't know where Angel will work though. For ER: Doug never left but Carol still had Kate and Tess. That is the only difference.

Buffy Summers walked down the steps from the El platform, looking for the entrance for Cook County General's ER entrance. She caught up to a tall, thin man wearing glasses that looked too small for his face.

"Excuse me, but could you tell me how to get to Cook County General Hospital?"

"Follow me. Are you injured?"

"No. I'm Buffy Summers. I start my ER rotation today."

"Mark Green." He held out his for her to shake and she did.

"I'm one of the attendings in the ER."

"So, I'll be working with you?"

"Sometimes. But mostly you'll be with your resident. Which I believe is Carter."

They entered through a pair of sliding doors right behind a pair of paramedics with a gurney. Dr. Green showed her the lounge and her locker. He gave her a brief tour of the ER and handed her off to a young man with sandy brown hair and expressive brown eyes. She could have been attracted to him if she didn't already have Angel.

"John Carter. And you are?"

"Buffy Summers. I'm a third year. I did all my other rotations in Los Angeles, but my boyfriend got a job out here, so I moved with him."

"And your parents didn't mind?"

"I haven't spoken to either of my parents in over a year. They both hate my boyfriend and the fact that he got me pregnant a few weeks after we reunited."

"Not the ideal home life."

"Who does anymore?"

"How do you like Chicago so far?"

"Its a lot colder than Los Angeles. I've rarely seen snow before but you seen to get the stuff in spades."

He took a chart and she followed him over to a curtained off area. "You don't get nauseous. do you?"

"With the stuff I've seen? Not in the least! Why?"

"I got extremely nauseous my first day. Just wondering cause sometimes, what you see is pretty gross."

He showed her how to put in an IV and she tried on the next patient she saw. Got it right. Then victims of an overturned school bus flooded the ER and she didn't always have the luxury of being shown stuff step-by-step. Which was fine by her cause she did just fine without someone hanging over her shoulder.

She had to massage a boy's heart from the inside with her gloved hands and the doctors and nurses were shocked for a moment when she volunteered to do it and looked straight at it without flinching. Then she did sutures and had to change into 5 different scrub tops because of all the blood and vomit that got all over her.

The low point came when a doctor quizzed her and she didn't know any of the answers.

Buffy was standing outside in the snow when a pretty, curly-haired brunette came out.

"I hear you're from LA."

Buffy just looked at her,

"I'm Carol Hathaway, soon to be Ross."

"Buffy Summers and yes, I'm from LA. Not used to these cold temperatures."

"Carter said that you moved here with your boyfriend."

"Is it that weird?"

"Nah, it just sounds like you really love him. To be able to leave your friends and family for him."

"I do love him and I was looking for any excuse to get out of LA. Plus I heard that they had some great teaching hospitals here."

"Carter also said that you said that you were pregnant at some point?"

"Our son is six months old."

"What's his name?"

"Liam Angelus III. I gave him his daddy's name and he wept when I did. It was a tradition in his family to have the eldest son, in some form, to be named after the dad. My boyfriend's name is Angel."

"Are you and Angel planning to tie the knot at any time?"

"When we can afford it, yes. We want to get settled in here first before we start planning."

A trauma came in and Carol had to go. They said their good-byes and Buffy got her stuff and just made the train to her stop. She wearily entered the apartment and collapsed on the couch, dead tired. Angel and Liam were already asleep so she just slept on the couch, too tired to move.
