Buffy awoke to whirling feelings of confusion. There was such darkness and the bed...wasn't hers. She tried to get up but strong arms held her possessively.

Her spurt of fear quickly subsided as the events of the day before rushed back. She placed her hand on the larger one resting on her stomach and stayed that way for quite some time, contently wrapped in his embrace. It was hard to tell where one ended and the other began, so intertwined were they. No warm breath feathered her hair and no heartbeat accompanied her own, but she didn't care. Longing threatened to choke her.

The antique clock chimed five breaking her reverie. Buffy silently groaned, school.

Slipping out of his hold, she shifted to face him. He opened one bleary eye and then the other. Buffy bit back a giggle.

"Buffy?" He mumbled.

"Hmm..." She trailed her fingers across his brow and entangled them in his thick brown hair. "Do you feel better?"

"Yes, much." Was the soft reply. Her smile was shy before Angel drew forward for a kiss. Her lips were soft, infused with warmth.

"Stay." He whispered.

She smiled sadly. "Duty calls." Her small hands played with his large ones. She lightly smoothed the bandage. "How about you? Are you healing ok?"

"Well," His mouth quirked into a small grin. "I had a good doctor."

She laughed. Kissing his hands, she rolled out of the bed. "I'll see you tonight." Hastily, she smoothed her clothes and hair.

"Promise?"

Buffy paused at the door. Quietly she replied, "Of course." She hesitated, as if wanting to say something else. But the moment passed and she left.

Angel lay back down, arms uncomfortably empty. He touched "her" side of the bed. Traces of warmth remained and her scent still clung to the sheets.

Buffy went up the stairs and into the bright sunlight. The rays shone, bathing her form. Saddened, she sighed. "I love you." The words stretched thinly in the breeze. "If only I could tell you."
