//She's like the wind through my tree//

Angel leaned against the wall in one of the many shadows of the Bronze. He would have left if it weren't for her, Buffy. He didn't belong. Not quite an outsider but not part of the gang either. Yet that didn't matter. To be in her presence, even for a moment, made him feel alive again.

//She rides the night next to me//

Gazing at her laughing with her friends he felt somewhat smug. They could never understand the Slayer within. Not the way he did. She was a warrior as was he. They swept through the night ridding the world of evil, powerful, together.

//Only to burn me with the sun//

Angel cast his mind to what Giles had once said, 'A vampire in love with a slayer. Rather poetic in a maudlin sort of way.' It was wasn't it? He was a monster, a child of hell. She was so pure and innocent. 'My only love, sprung from my only hate'. Shakespeare had been a wise man. They were of two worlds, Buffy and he. Worlds that could never meet.

//She's taken my heart but she doesn't know what she's done//

Buffy, feeling his stare, turned her head. As she cast a brilliant smile Angel felt his knees go weak. The effect of one glance, one word was staggering. She would never know how he already loved her. Lost in thought he was surprised by the small warm hand that slid into his large cold one. Her voice a whisper she asked him to dance. Reaching the dance floor she tentatively placed her head on his chest and relaxed into his arms.

//Feel her breath on my face,
Her body close to me//

Angel marveled at how perfectly she fit into his embrace. They swayed gently to the music. Other couples couldn't help but notice the unusual couple.

He was tall, muscular, and dark haired, while she was petite, slight, and blonde. It had been so long since that kiss and he had missed her touch.

//Can't look in her eyes
She's out of my league//

Angel held her close. He couldn't quite believe she had chosen him. He didn't deserve her. Didn't deserve someone who was far better then he.

//Just a fool to believe I have anything she needs,
She's like the wind//

This could never work. What could he possibly give? His love was the only thing he had to offer and it wasn't enough. He had seen the boys who wanted to date her. They were her age, could walk in the sun, and oh yeah, weren't freaks of darkness. And yet...

//I look in the mirror and all I see,
Is a young old man with only a dream//

A patron entered the Bronze and the flash of light off the swinging door caught Angel's attention. Turning his head the reflection glared balefully back at him. There was a pang in his heart as he saw Buffy dancing with no one.

//Am I just fooling myself that she'll stop the pain//

Buffy was his salvation. Whenever he was around her, his guilt wasn't so pressing, invading his every waking moment. There were moments, though, when Angel questioned if loving someone would ever ease his pain over the past, his horrible bloody past. As if sensing his dark thoughts, Buffy raised her head and looked searchingly into his eyes. Her response was a half smile and then he kissed her. She drew him closer and his arms tightened around her waist. The song ended as did the kiss and Angel stepped away. As he left the Bronze all he could see was she. Buffy in the white dress with the lights shining overhead and her fingers to her lips, as if to keep the taste of him forever.

//Living without her, I'd go insane//

Later in the blackness of early morning, Angel walked the quiet streets of Sunnydale. He stopped in front of one particular house. Climbing the already familiar tree he stared at his love through the window. A cryptic message there, a helpful hand in fighting there, Angel always found some way to be in her life. He couldn't stay away no matter how hard he tried. Life without Buffy would drive him into madness.

//Feel her breath on my face,
Her body close to me//

Entering her room he knelt by the bed. His fingers trailed down her cheek, brushing a wisp of hair from her face. Angel took her hands in his own.

Bringing them to his lips, he kissed the back of her hand, her palm, her fingers. A small sigh of contentment escaped the lips of the Slayer.

//Can't look in her eyes,
She's out of my league,
Just a fool to believe I have anything she needs,
She's like the wind//

Angel stayed till minutes before dawn, listening to the steady beating of her heart. He allowed himself one more glance back as he descended the tree. Lingering thoughts of his beloved accompanied him home.

//She's like the wind.//
