Angel entered the room to find Buffy in bed attached to a number of machines. "Hey, how are you feeling?" He wasn't sure why all the wires were attached to her but he didn't like it.

"Pretty good except for this sharp pain every few minutes." Buffy tried to lighten the mood.

"Well that's to be expected. You are having a baby after all." He leaned over and placed a kiss on her lips. "Don't worry Baby everything will be fine." That's what he told her but all he could think of was how often women died in childbirth. He remembered form his childhood that it was a very common occurrence.

"It will?" She asked like a scared little girl.

"Of course it will. Any baby of ours will be very strong not to mention a fighter. Don't worry everything will be okay." He just hoped he could believe it.

Buffy screamed in pain as the strongest contraction yet ripped through her body. She took the hand Angel offered in her crushing grip not seeing him wince. The contraction passed and she lay back on the bed. " Oh God, that was the worst yet. I'm so glad you're here. I don't think I could do this without you. Angel.." She started only to stop unsure how to bring up the subject. "Angel, do you think our baby will be okay?"

"Didn't I just say so?" How could he answer her when he had doubts of his own.

"No, I mean normal." At his look she continued. "Xander said it would be a demon." Buffy had not wanted to tell him what Xander had said but she wanted his reassurance.

"Well you're the Slayer, your soul is pure. I may be a demon but I also have my soul. I think our child will be fine." He wished he was as sure as he sounded.

"Do you think it will need blood or be allergic to the sun or crosses?" Buffy was somewhat relieved, she wouldn't mind if their child took after its daddy in small ways as long as it had its soul.

"I'm not sure Baby, but I've never heard of someone being born without a soul." He needed to keep her calm, she needed to focus on giving birth not on what Xander said. When this was over he would find him and teach him to keep his mouth shut.

The nurse came in to check on Buffy. "Buffy your friend might want to wait outside while I check you out."

"No nurse Joan, this is my husband Angel, he just got home an hour ago and I don't want him to leave me ever again." Buffy looked up lovingly at her husband.

Nurse Joan moved to the end of the bed and lifted the sheet to see how she was progressing. She stole a glance at Angel noticing the obvious age difference. "Well Buffy it looks like your baby will be making an appearance soon, you are fully effaced and dilated to six centimeters. Your baby will be here soon, I hope you two are ready." She turned to Angel; "I'll bring you some ice chips for your wife. Make sure she eats them slowly and call me if she needs anything." At his nod she left and quickly returned with the ice.

Angel had finished feeding Buffy some ice when there was a knock at the door. Angel opened the door to find Giles on the other side. "Come in Giles."

"How is she doing Angel?" As he asked the question Buffy screamed, sending Angel to her side in an instant.

"It's all right Baby, I'm right here. I promise I won't go anywhere." At her nod he wiped her face again. Her body was soaked with sweat and she was exhausted. "She's doing fine Giles, after all she is the Slayer, she has had harder battles than this."

"Buffy I called Willow, she and Oz are on their way. She also said she would call Cordelia, is there anyone else I should call?" Giles had hoped she and Joyce had made up but he knew it was highly unlikely.

"No Giles, I can't think of anyone else I want here."

"What about your..." Angel was quickly cut off by Giles.

"Well I think I shall wait for the others outside, this is no place for me. Angel, may I speak to you for a moment?" He had yet to warn Angel about Joyce.

"I'll be right back Buffy." He kissed Buffy and followed Giles to the door.

"Okay Buffy, one more push and your baby will be here." He waited for the next contraction. "One, two, three, push. Come on, that's it, one more push, and here he is." He looked up at the new parents. "You have a brand new baby boy. Would you like to cut the cord Dad?"

Angel took the scissors from the doctor and cut the cord linking his child to Buffy. He looked at the tiny baby, black hair and blue eyes, he was so small . He watched as the doctor started to clean the baby.

"Why isn't he crying? Shouldn't he be crying?" Buffy was becoming frantic. "Is he okay? Please tell me my son's okay." Tears started to well in her eyes.

"He looks good for being seventeen weeks premature. He's awfully big, we must have miscalculated your due date. Don't worry because he hasn't cried yet, some babies are more tolerant to outside stimuli." Doctor Mark delivered the after birth and cleaned Buffy up while the nurse took the baby.
