Diary

by Lynsey

Hidy-ho! Well, this is probably the last thing I'll be writing for a while. Well, I did have some inspiration on a fic I have been writing for a while as I sat in math this afternoon, so maybe I can get that done. But until then, I may be quiet. Unless of course I get a stroke of creative brilliance. We can all hope. ;) So, read this and enjoy.
Disclaimer: Is not mine. I'd treat 'em a heckuva lot better than they are currently being treated. Bread owns the song, Diary.
Rating: PG
Summary: Riley finds Buffy's diary . . .
Spoilers: Nope, nadda one
Distribution: If I've given you permission already, go for it. If anyone else wants it, ask please.
Dedication: All my special friends (that's all of ya), Shirlz for reminding that I had written this and hadn't sent it to anyone.
Author's Note: Blame my parents, they listen Bread all the time and this fic came. And I'm kinda nice to Riley. I tried to be as true to the character as possible with this one, I usually try to avoid writing him all together because I don't like him.
Feedback: I wouldn't say no to it.

Buffy stood up, smiling down at him before running off to meet Willow. A book fell out of her bag, but before he realized it she was gone. Riley picked it up, fingering the material on the cover. It was a vibrant tie-dye material, echoing perfectly the owner's vivacity. It was her diary.

I found her diary underneath a tree
and started reading about me.
The words she'd written took me by surprise
you'd never read them in her eyes.
They said she had found the love she waited for.
Wouldn't you know it, she wouldn't show it.

Dear Diary,

Sometimes, I imagine he's holding me in his arms even though he's not here. I love him. I love him when he's near, far, there; it doesn't matter because I'll *ALWAYS* love him . . .

When she confronted with the writing there,
simply pretended not to care.
I passed it off as just in keeping
her total disconcerting air
and though she tried to hide
the love that she denied,
wouldn't you know it, she wouldn't show it.

I miss him, oh, still so much . . . I dream of his touch. Even in a dream world he sends shivers up and down my spine. I didn't believe in the fairy tales and movies until I met him. Then I knew. I knew that true love, it's real. I have to keep telling myself that line from The Princess Bride, the one that Westley says to Buttercup after she's pushed him down the hill, "Death cannot stop true love. All it can do is delay it for a while." . . .

And as I go through my life, I will give to her my wife
all the sweet things I can find

I found her diary underneath a tree
and started reading about me.
The words began to stick and the tears to flow.
Her meaning was now clear to see.
The love she'd waited for was someone else not me.
Wouldn't you know it, she wouldn't show it.

He's my true love. Angel, I'll always wait for him. It doesn't matter who is here with me today, touching my hair or caressing my face, I'm still *HIS* girl. I'll be waiting for him everyday. One day, he'll come home to me and we'll finally be free. I miss him so much. But, here I go again, "Death cannot stop true love. All it can do is delay it for a while." I'm waiting for the delay to be over. If I have to, I'll wait forever.

Buffy

and as I go through my life, I will wish for her his wife
all the sweet things she can find
all the sweet things they can find.

Riley put the diary down, wishing that he had listened to the little voice in his head that told him not to read the diary. He'd have saved himself a broken heart. She still loved him. It didn't matter what he did or ever could do for her, she would always love him. A vampire, with a soul. He didn't care. His heart was breaking all over again as he came to a realization about the past year of their relationship.

She was always somewhat distant. He'd notice her from afar and as he got closer, the dreamy look in her eyes that he had always thought was for him would disappear as she saw him. He'd come into her room as she was secretly sliding a book under her pillows, a smile hiding sad eyes. Always avoiding certain places. He'd once joked about how it would be interesting if they'd had a major make-out session while on patrol. Pain flashed through her eyes as she stammered that it would distract the hunting. Now he wondered if she'd had those sessions with him. Probably. He sighed in defeat. Flicking to the page he'd read again, her words haunted him.

"It doesn't matter who is here with me today . . ." It was dated the day before. He didn't matter. At least not as much as the vampire. And while he didn't doubt that she loved him, she wouldn't wait forever for it. He closed the book for the last time and set out to find her. "If you love someone, set them free. If they don't come back to you, it wasn't meant to be." He was setting her free and he knew that she wouldn't come back.

The End

Well? I think I managed to bash and be nice at the same time. Amazing.
