Buffy leant towards a tree. She let out a deep sigh and gazed up at the clear sky, filled with millions of stars. With a firm movement her stake lay on the ground, in the green, soft grass filled with dew. And she had let her guard down. Big mistake.

As he stepped out of the shadows he was sure she'd react, but her eyes had closed and she had a peaceful look at her face. With a grin he strolled quietly over to the Slayer and peered down at her.

He used his foot to whip the stake up in the air and then caught it easily.

"Slayer!" he said loudly, causing Buffy to startle and reach for the stake. It surprised her that she couldn't find it and she looked up at Spike. He had a foolish smirk on his face.

"Y'know, I could've killed you by now." He said, trying to make a useless point.

"As if…" Buffy mumbled and sent him a tired look.

Spike sat down besides her, handed her the stake and sighed. He barely glanced at her, but knew she was peering at him. He just knew.

"There is something I just don't get…" Spike began, eyes closed. "How come we mourn over our lovers?"

"I have a reason… Angel didn't run away with a fungus demon…" Buffy replied with a grin.

"Is it better to leave of own free will, then to run away with someone?" Spike snapped back. Buffy understood that he was right. Painfully right.

"I sent him to hell, then he came back, I left him, then we were back together again and then he left me. It's like an episode of a soap…" she mumbled.

"Where does the vampire/slayer thingy come in?" Spike wondered.

"Details, details…" Buffy laughed. Spike, for once, grinned of her not–so–funny joke.

They just sat a while watching the stars, talking about everything that came to their mind, discussed it and laughed. Buffy found herself often in a position where she was able to say that she enjoyed being with Spike. He was funny, caring and more or less sensitive.

Spike knew she was the Slayer, but he couldn't help it, he felt like he had to care for that poor girl. He was about 10 times as old as her and had faced all the mentionable fears existing. He was one of them though. But, everything having the slightest bit of connection with her being a slayer and he her enemy was forgotten. They were chatting like old friends. And they both enjoyed it.

Whether it was because they both were heartbroken – both by a vampire, or if they were just lonely and needed someone to turn to, they didn't know. They didn't care.

Five hours, just talking, Buffy had to get home. They rose up and glanced at each other. Buffy stretched out a hand and he caught it.

"Nice to talk with you, Spike," she said, smiling thankfully. "It really helped me."

"It helped me too, a lot. It was good getting those loathes off my chest for once," he grinned embarrassed. But, Buffy understood and smiled comforting.

"We gotta do this again some time…" she began. Spike nodded in agreement.

"Deffinitley!" he smiled and left.

Willow immeditily knew something had happened to her. She'd changed, lightened up and she actually had a smile rapped around her face.

"Hey," Buffy greeted and went into the bathroom and began brushing her teeth, singing show–tunes.

"Show–tunes??" Willow whispered with a raised eyebrow. "Buffy…" she began when Buffy stepped out of the bath room. "What happened on patrolling tonight?"

"Oh, nothing special. Slayed some vamps, bumped into Spike, slayed some more vamps, and did I forget, slayed some more vamps?" Buffy mumbled and went into her room.

As they'd talked on the phone and arranged the meeting, Spike sat leaning into the tree when Buffy got there.

"Hey."

"Been here long?" Buffy wondered and felt guilty for being so late.

"Nah. Just came, pet."

Buffy sat down besides him and smiled. He replied her smile and cleared his throat.

"What ya want to talk through today, luv?" he asked with a smirk. Buffy chuckled and began telling about her feelings when Angel had left her.

I guess the moral in this story is that the lonely seek the lonely. No matter what their past, future or destiny is.

The End
