“Mommy, Mommy wake up.”
Buffy was jarred from her sleep by the four-year old jumping on her bed . “Baby, it’s too early. Go back to sleep.”
“But Mommy,” the four-year old argued. “Daddy ‘s coming home today.”
“Alright, I’m getting up,” a very sleeping Buff y replied.
Buffy took her four-year old daughter, Erin, downstairs to the kitchen for some breakfast. Daddy was indeed coming home today and everyone had stuff they needed to get done. Angel and Buffy Donnely had been married fo r eight years and had three beautiful children. Besides Erin there was Sara who was six and Katie who was two. Angel hoped that the baby Buffy was now carrying would be a boy. Angel had left a week ago to go to New York on business. He was an art appraiser and there was a very elderly man living there who was looking to sell his entire art collection before he died.
As Erin ate her Lucky Charms, Buffy went upstairs to check on her other two daughters. Before she could reach the top of the stairs, Buffy was almost run over by Sara who was in a mad dash to get outside. “ Wa it a second,” Buffy called. “Where are you going?”
“Outside,” Sara replied as if it explained everything and no other words were needed.
“Why?” Buffy prompted.
“Because Dad promised he would teach me how to ride a two-wheel er when he got back, and I gotta get my bike ready.”
“Honey, why don’t you just wait until Dad gets home bef ore you do all that stuff.”
Buffy tried to reason with her daughter, but Sara wasn’t cooper ating.
“Well,” Buffy finally gave in. “If you’re going outside then eat some breakfast first.”
“Fine,” Sara replied unenthusiastically.

Once Buffy had gotten Sara settled down with her CoCo Puffs, she return ed upstairs. She walked into her youngest daughter’s room. “ Wake up, Katie baby.”
The little girl yawned and looked up at her mother with her hazel eyes. “Mama,” she smiled.
“Hi, baby girl.”
Katie reached for Buffy and Buffy picked her up and began carrying her downstairs. As they walked down the stairs, Katie began to fall asleep again. “You tired, baby?” Buffy asked.
Katie with her head on Buffy’s shoulder nodded.
“You gotta wake up, sweetie. Daddy’s coming home today .”
At that Katie lifted up her little head just a bit and smiled, “Dadee?”
“Yeah,” Buffy responded.
“Dadee! Dadee!” Katie continued to cheer. She was wi ggling so much from her excitement that Buffy finally had to let her down. Katie skipped off to the kitchen to find her sisters.
Buffy followed her into the kitchen and found her three daughters fighting over the cereal box prize. All three girls whined as Buffy took t he prize from her eldest daughter. Buffy examined the little toy car and wondered why her girls were so interested in it. None of them ever showed any interest in anything remotely boyish. “Mom,” Sara comp lained.
Buffy looked down at her three girls, and they stared back up at her wi th pleading eyes. “Why are you girls so interested in this?” Buffy asked.
“For baby bruder,” Katie replied smiling as she patted Buffy’s slightly rounded belly. “Hello, bruder,” she said to Buffy’ s stomach.
“Who says the baby’s gonna be a boy?” Buffy as ked her girls.
“Daddy,” Erin responded.
“Oh,” Buffy said. She had been suspecting that Angel w as going behind her back to convince the girls the baby should and would be a boy. If it w as possible it made her love him even more and she hated herself for thinking it was so cute.
“How about I keep ahold of this until the baby is born, and if it’s a boy, I’ll give it back and you can give it to him then,” Bu ffy tried to reason. “O.K.?”
All the girls agreed and went off to play.

Later that morning, Buffy had gotten everyone dressed and cleaned up after the girls had decided it would be a good idea to play with daddyâ €™s shaving cream. Now they were all sitting on the living room floor decorati ng a ‘Welcome Home, Dad!’ banner. All of a sudden, Erin let o ut a scream. “What? What’s wrong?” Buffy asked frantically.
“Sara colored over what I drew for Daddy,” Erin bawled.
“Sara,” Buffy questioned her daughter. “Why di d you do that?”
“I didn’t mean to,” Sara replied.
“How could you not mean to?” Buffy questioned as Erin crawled into her lap still sobbing.
“I was just drawing; I thought it was scribbles,” Sara stated simply. That made Erin cry even more.
“Sara, apologize to your sister,” Buffy demanded sternl y.
“I’m sorry,” Sara said sincerely. Erin stopped crying for a moment. “I’ll help you fix it,” Sara offered. Erin sniffl ed a little and then returned to her place on the floor next to her big sister.
During this time, Katie had begun to cry softly. “What†™s the matter, baby?” Buffy asked worriedly.
“I got bue on me.” She replied close to tears.
Buffy looked down at Katie’s hands, they were covered in blue m arker as were her white shorts and favorite new yellow top. Buffy had just bought i t for her so she could have a new outfit to show her daddy when he came home.
Buffy picked up and threw away the broken blue marker. Thankfully none of it had gotten on the carpet and it was washable so she could probably get it o ut of Katie’s clothes later. Buffy picked Katie up and carried her up stairs after telling Sara and Erin to behave themselves.
When Buffy tried to take off Katie’s shirt to change her into a clean one, Katie protested loudly. “Noooooo!” she cried, big tea rs falling down her cheeks.
“Baby, you can’t wear a dirty shirt,” Buffy tri ed to explain.
“Bu...bu,” Katie stuttered between sobs. “Da D a.... Daddeee..... my wellow shwert.”
“I know, baby, but you can wear it for Daddy on another day.”
“Nooooo!” Katie continued to sob.
*Ugh!* Buffy thought. *I wish Angel was here.*

A couple of hours later, things had settled down. Buffy had finally gotten Katie to change, but after the girls had decided to make brownies fo r their dad, all three girls had to change their clothes again. After Buffy put Erin and Katie down for their naps, she helped Sara hang the banner in the living room. Now, Sara sat on the floor watching cartoons as Buffy tri ed to clean up the house a little.
“Mommy?” Erin asked coming down the stairs.
“What are you doing up?” Buffy questioned.
“I’m not tired,” Erin responded.
“If you don’t finish your nap,” Buffy continued . “ You won’t b able to stay up to see Daddy when he comes home.”
Erin seemed to consider what her mother said and then turned around and went back upstairs.
“Whew,” Buffy let out a breath. She really wasn†™t in the mood to fight with her daughter about her nap.
“Mom,” Sara asked from behind her.
“Yeah, honey,” Buffy responded.
“When is dad coming home?” she asked.
“He should be home pretty soon.”

Angel returned home almost four hours late. He had gotten stuck doing more work than he had expected. He walked into his home and looked around for his family. His eyes landed on one of the most beautiful sights he had ever seen, his wife was lying on the couch with their four-year old daughte r in her arms. His other two daughters were cuddled together on the big loun ge chair. All four girls were sound asleep.
Angel put his luggage down in the entryway and slowly walked over towar ds Buffy. He was careful not to wake anyone as he knelt in front of the couch and kissed Buffy on the cheek. Her eyes fluttered open, and she smiled whe n she saw Angel looking down at her.
“Hi,” she said.
“Hi,” he whispered, being sure not to wake the sleeping Erin.
“I missed you.”
“I missed you, too,” Angel replied before kissing her o n the forehead as she drifted off to sleep again.
