She loved him as long as she could remember. Her young heart was so fragile, yet she let him have it. Without any reservation at all. She had thought he was perfect. His darkness haunting, yet so beautiful at the same time. She remembered when she had first met him. In an alleyway surrounded by blackness. So much like their relationship. Doomed from the beginning. He a vampire. She a slayer. They should have never met. Should have never fallen in love. But they did, and she had to deal with her shattered heart.
He had left her so long ago. She had thought that he would look at her and remember how much he loved her, and maybe he wouldn’t leave. But he did. He moved on. He loved another. She could admit that she had no real right to be angry, or jealous. She had been with other men. Replacement men. They had meant nothing, and she was just doing what she thought would make him happy. She didn’t really believe that. She wasn’t trying to make him happy at all. She was trying to make him angry. Make him remember that he loved her. He didn’t remember. He wasn’t angry.
She wanted more than anything for her situation to be different. For her to be a normal girl. For him to be a normal boy. But normal kids didn’t fight demons, and lose their souls. She looked out the window. Loving him was fucking useless. Hope was too difficult.
And so she dreamt. Dreamt about what they could be. What she wanted. A life without Cordelia, or demons, or death. She hated this life. She hated not being with him. She doubted he felt the same way. He had a family. Something to look forward to. He had a son, friends, and a lover. She had debt, a sister, a sucky ass job, and dumb friends. Sometimes she wondered when things would be brighter. Her former self was so positive. She missed the way she used to be. The hopeful Buffy. She bit her lip, and brushed back her stray hair.
And then she understood. She understood why she was the way she was. He was the best part of her. Her happiness. Her joy. Her beauty. He was missing, and so was a part of herself. When he came back to her. When he loved her again, she would be complete. The sun could rise, and she could be happy again.
