This timeline only includes dates and events original to this universe. Things like the canon characters’ dates of birth and, in the case of vampires, their being turned are not included.
 

Ca. 16 billion years ago:
The universe (physical and ethereal dimensions) is created with the help of eleven books of primal magic. One among them is the Necronomicon Nocturnum. The books are later given to the Librarian for safekeeping.

Ca. 1 million years ago:
The human race gains dominance on Earth after most forms of demonic life are banished to other dimensions. When the first humans begin to muse about the afterlife, their imagination and expectations give form to the ethereal realms. Among the many afterlives created in this way are the realms of Heaven and Hell, who begin to imprison the souls of the deceased for the power it gains them.

537 BC
One of the Cosmic Players steals the Necronomicon from the Library and brings it into the universe. The book manifests in a desert on Earth.

ca. 500 BC
The first human to find the Necronomicon is a religious hermit in Egypt. Reading the book drives him mad.

ca. 100 AD
A woman in Japan uses the power of the Necronomicon to wipe out Dragons all over Earth, paying for it with her life’s blood. It is later revealed that a few Dragons survived this purge, as they were hiding in human forms.

ca. 500 AD
Vampire magicians create the blood bond, called Vinculum Dies Noctis Cruentos, to bind a human to a Vampire Master in order to function as their eyes and ears in daylight. The bond is two-sided, though, and there are cases of the human enslaving the Vampire instead of the other way around. The bond is used only very seldom. In the 21st century Buffy and Angel use it to bind themselves together for eternity.

ca. 600 AD
The Council of Watchers is founded and becomes the guiding institution of the Slayer. The Council survives until the early 21st century before it is disbanded.

896 AD
The Harbinger of Golgotha arrives on Earth, attempting to open a portal to allow his master access to the world. He is thwarted by the Slayer, the Council of Watchers, and an army of knights. The Harbinger's sword and the artifact that would open the dimensional gate can not be destroyed, so a circle of powerful wizards binds them. The magic they use is bound to their bloodline to prevent it from decaying with time. In 2038 AD the girl Dawn Heywood will be the last of the sorcerers' descendants.

ca. 1050 AD
A monk finds the Necronomicon and hides it in a Balkan monastery. It supposedly remains there until found by Angelus and Spike in 1907 AD.

1711
Geoffrey Jerome is turned into a Vampire. After the Restoration of Souls in 1907 he founds the Church of the Holy Blood. He dies in 2002, committing suicide by embracing a Christian cross.

1741
A Hellmouth erupts in the Californian colonies of America. There are rumors that the Necronomicon might have been connected with this event. The town of Sunnydale is later built in this spot.

1753
Liam O'Conner is turned into a vampire at the hands of Darla. Upon his death his soul goes to Hell, because Liam believes that he deserves damnation.

1842
Thomas Jefferson Edwards is born in America. Turned into a Vampire at the age of 31 and renaming himself Mr. Trick, he survives until 1999 when he is killed by Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

1898
Calderash Gypsies curse Vampires Angelus and Spike with souls after killing several of the clan’s daughters.

1907
Angelus and Spike work the Restoration of Souls from the Necronomicon Nocturnum, thereby giving souls to all Vampires worldwide. Without their knowing the Restoration damages the Ethereal Threshold that separates the living and the dead. Over the course of the next 150 years the barrier begins to break down.
Many Vampires commit suicide upon the return of their souls, among them Master Heinrich Nest, Sire of Darla.

1908
The Vampirium, leading institution of the Vampire race, gathers to discuss the changes made by the Restoration. Darla takes over leadership of the Order of Aurelius after Nest’s demise. The Vampirium decides that Angelus is to be entrusted with the Necronomicon Nocturnum and the book is hidden away in a bunker in Ireland called Newgrange, where it remains until 1999.

1918
A British soldier named Julius Hart meets Samuel Morning, the ruler of Hell, on a battlefield in France. Playing Poker against him, the soldier wins immortality from the demon. Learning what kind of fate awaits the dead, Hart enters into a working relationship with Morning. He later moves to America and founds the law firm Wolfram & Hart.

ca. 1920
The Slayer is a Greek girl called Diana. Upon her death she goes to the White Room, where she is imprisoned until freed by Buffy and Faith in 2057 AD.

1953
Angel and Spike stay in the Hyperion Hotel in Los Angeles, discovering that it is haunted by a paranoia demon. After exorcising the creature, Angel buys the Hotel and it becomes his more or less permanent home.

during 1960s
Angel and Spike travel with a Vampire called Fred, who becomes addicted to drugs. Building a cell in the cellar of the Hyperion, Angel forces Fred through withdrawal.

1976
SPIKE: BLOOD & WHISKEY
Spike loses Drusilla to a Slayer called Niki, whom he tracks down and kills. Upon her death Niki is one of the Slayers that goes to the White Room, where she is imprisoned until freed by Buffy and Faith in 2057 AD.

1994
The existence of Vampires becomes public knowledge after a court case.
Faith, aged twelve, loses her parents to Vampires.

1996
Angel, looking up on a rumor of a spell that can turn Vampires back into human beings, meets the half-demon Doyle. The spell turns out to be nothing but a fairy tale and Doyle helps Angel escape from a lynch mob.

1997
Angel kills his childe Penn, who refused to give up his killer ways after the return of his soul. In the process he saves Cordelia Chase, who becomes one of his best friends. Cordelia becomes an active worker in America’s pro-Vampire lobby, despite her father disinheriting her for socializing with the undead.

1998
Angel encounters Kendra, the Vampire Slayer. Though he manages to convince her Watcher Wesley Windham-Pryce that Vampires deserve to be treated like human beings, Kendra does not stray from her mission. Wesley is forced to kill her in order to save a family with half-demon children from death. When Kendra dies, Buffy Summers is chosen as the Slayer.
Angel comes upon Faith, who tries to fight some Vampires on her own. Taking the girl under his wing, he becomes her surrogate father / big brother and shows her that not all Vampires are evil.

1999
SOULWORLD I
The new Vampire Slayer, Buffy, is captured by Angel. He manages to make her see that Vampires are human beings and deserve to be treated as such. In the process the two fall in love. During an attack by the Watchers’ Council Buffy is gravely wounded and is clinically dead for a minute, causing Angel’s teenage friend Faith to be called as the next Slayer.

SOULWORLD II
Later that same year the Vampire Master Grigory captures Angel and attempts to revoke the Restoration of Souls, but fails. His Order is all but destroyed. The Necronomicon Nocturnum is lost in a nuclear explosion. The Vampire Legalization Act is passed, giving Vampire’s full citizen rights. The success is largely due to Cordelia, by now leader of the pro-Vampire lobby "Vampire Rights".

2002
SOULWORLD III
Religious unrest ensues when the Church of the Holy Blood preaches about Vampires being the true chosen of God. Also there is worry about people turning themselves into Vampires in droves, longing for eternal life. The situation is defused through a speech by Angel, which convinces the followers of the Church that becoming a Vampire is anything but a blessing.
Buffy convinces Angel to perform the Blood Bond with her, effectively tying the two of them together for all eternity. For the first time in centuries Angel can see the sunrise through Buffy’s eyes.

2004
Cordelia gives birth to a son, naming him Liam William Chase, who will becomes President of the United States fifty years later.

2005
LOCKLEY'S LAW
Buffy turns 24, now allowed to join the PID as a Federal Marshall. She works with Angel’s former partner Kate Lockley.

Vampire Legalization is established in Europe, China, and Russia. Most other countries follow within the year. Only a few smaller countries refuse. Wesley Windham-Pryce publishes his book "The Chosen Ones", a detailed history of the Slayers.

2008
The UN Rights Commission officially decides that the term ‘human being’ includes undead humans.

2010
The use of magic becomes an economic factor. Humbold University in Berlin, Germany is the first university to offer courses in magic theory and practice.
Cordelia's second child is born, a daughter called Elizabeth Katrina Chase.

2014
Magitech Inc. is founded by Willow and Tara Rosenberg, the first company to design and construct magical computers. The company is an instant success and causes hundreds of imitators to appear on the market. Willow and Tara become the Bill Gates of the 21st century.

2018
The Vampirium Elders decide to go corporate. The vast Vampirium Holding Company becomes known by the nickname Dead Men Inc.. Darla is named CEO.

2021
Buffy and Angel stage a raid on the headquarters of the Council of Watchers, capturing the Council's massive database in the process. The Council, already crippled through the desertion of the Slayer and the massive negative publicity, disbands. Only a few hardliners remain and go underground.

2023
Dawn Heywood is born, descendant of the twelve sorcerers that bound the tools of Golgotha.

2027
Rupert Giles dies of cancer. Before his death Darla offers him eternal life as a Vampire, but Giles declines.

2030
Cordelia's first grandchild is born.

2035
The Harbinger of Golgotha awakes beneath Manhatten. He begins preparations for the coming of its master by building a focusing tower in the middle of the city, disguised as an apartment building.

2037
Faith undergoes medical testing at Magitech due to her extremely slow aging process. It is discovered that the superior healing powers of the Slayer are delaying old age, giving her a life expectancy of at least a hundred years.

2038
SOULWORLD V
The greater demon Golgotha manifests on Earth in New York City with the aid of the Harbinger. Dawn, last descendant of the sorcerers that bound Golgotha in the past, is killed despite Buffy's attempt to save her. Willow, Tara, Angel, and Buffy manage to use Golgotha's own tools against it and trap the monster in a collapsing dimensional doorway. They also destroy the Harbinger and its tools. New York City is almost destroyed in the battle, but the largest part of the population survives.
Seeing Golgotha's dimensional gateway in action gives Tara an inspiration that will eventually lead to her developing the Stepping Disks

2041
Joyce Summers dies of a stroke.
The Nimir, a demonic swarm, invade the Earth. They are beaten back by Angel and friends.

2054
Liam William Chase, son of Cordelia Chase, becomes president of the United States.

2056
Tara Rosenberg dies in a car accident. Shortly prior to her death she perfected the Stepping Disks, the first magical bulk teleportation technology, which were inspired by the dimensional vortex used by Golgotha in 2038.

2057
SOULWORLD IV
Giles returns as a ghost to warn Angel and Buffy of the imminent breakdown of the Ethereal Threshold. Souls are finding their way back to the living world, causing a war between Heaven and Hell, who use souls as a power source. Finding out that the Necronomicon is the cause for everything, Buffy recruits dead Slayers from the White Room to find the Library, where another book is found to repair the damage. Vampires and Slayers invade Heaven and Hell to free the souls held captive their, leading to the destruction of both realms. Buffy receives the wings of the renegade Archangel Raphael as a gift. The dead Slayers bring the Necronomicon back to the Library, removing it from the universe for good.
