It was fifteen years since their last kiss
Under this big old tree.
They were back here - together at last
Just as it was meant to be.

Fifteen years have come and gone
Years spent apart - but not anymore.
Kept apart by duty and circumstance
And a better world that they were fighting for.

When he walked away from his only love
He thought he was doing the right thing.
And then it was easier to stay away
Then to fight for what their together might bring.

She let him walk away that night.
She didn't even call out his name
And then she tried to have a new life
But nothing was ever again the same.

He remembers the day that never was
And the special place it holds in his heart.
The day all their dreams came true
Until he was forced to tear it apart.

She went on to another man
She gave what she had to give.
But her heart was no longer whole
And it seemed easier to die than to live.

He thought he would greet the sun
When he knew she was no longer here.
But he was a memorial to her life and their love
Fighting the fight - kept her near.

And then they were given a miracle
And to each other they did go.
But the sorrow of all their yesterdays
Wouldn't let the love in their hearts flow.

So back to their lives they went
Closing the door on that old pain.
She took a lover in secret
Hoping it would help her feel again.

He was given a son he thought never to have
But with this came betrayal and sadness.
Though it took some time to set it right
Father and son came to know gladness.

Then it was one thing or another
That kept true love from reaching out.
Though they tried to make new lives for themselves
Deep in their hearts lived the doubt.

Time and fear of a rejection
Caused them to fight on alone.
Then came the end of days battle
That at long last called him home.

There was no need for words
When their eyes met that day.
Full of love, hope, longing and need
Together they stepped into the fray.

Now side by side and hand in hand
Under this big old tree.
True love has found its peace at last
Just as it was meant to be.

Our friends stand here and weep
And say their last goodbye.
For under this big old tree
Today they buried you and I.

Though we died - we now truly live
And eternity together is ours at last.
We've earned the right to our happiness
And so to each other we hold fast.
We walk together towards our future
And say farewell to the past.
