She caught his eyes from across the dark dance floor. Somehow, amidst the hundreds of people there were that evening, he had managed to single her out. Eyes still locked, they made their way towards each other across the dance floor. As they reached the center the lights dimmed, and a spotlight was put solely on them.

"How?" she asked.

"Shhh, just dance with me?" he quieted her. He gently took her petite frame into his arms and the music started to play.

In the still of the night

I held you, held you tight

‘Cause I love you, love you so

Promise I’ll never let you go

In the still of the night

She moved closer into his warm embrace as the song played. He enjoyed the warmth of her body against his, and the smell of her hair. She could feel his cool breath on her neck, and the way her small hand fit perfectly into his larger one. They danced in slow circles, as if they were the only ones in the entire world. The spotlight, turning her hair into a wave of rippling fire, as she moved.

I remember that night in May

The stars were bright above

I’ll hope and I’ll pray

To keep your precious love

They moved gracefully together. Anyone watching them could see the obvious love that they had for each other. The other couples on the dance floor slowly retreated, and soon the couple was the only one left. Everyone watched in awe at their tender embrace, and wondered who they were. She, the petite girl with flowing red hair, in a smooth white dress. He, a tall man with brooding brown eyes dressed in an elegant suit.

Well before the light

Hold me again with all of your might

In the still of the night

As the song ended she looked up to his face with tears in her eyes.

"I don’t want it to end." She said.

"Neither do I. But we have no choice in the matter. Just know that I love you, and I always will." He replied taking her chin in his hand.

"I love you too." A single tear rolled down her cheek.

And then she was gone. He stood in the middle of the dance floor alone, as he had countless nights before this one. But this time he had told her, and he knew that no matter what else would happen in the future, she would know. As he stood there, the song ended, and everything slowly slid into black. The last lines seeming to echo into the dark.

So before the light

Hold me again with all of your might

Willow slowly opened her eyes. Her room was shrouded in darkness. She couldn’t remember what had awoken her. But, somewhere in the back of her mind she heard the last lines of a song.

In the still of the night

In the still of the night

And a tear slipped silently down her cheek.

The End
