The sun filtered through the canopy of trees and reflected off her dirty copper hair. She crouched behind the high shrubbery, and watched a small procession of humans walking through the jungle. The clumsy beings stumbled over roots and she covered her mouth to keep from giggling. They were the most amusing beasts she had ever seen and she never got tired of watching the many expeditions that these stubborn mammals sent into the wilderness. They were stupid, there was no doubt about that. They continued to send load after load of there reeking species into the wilderness, and none of them ever returned. And yet here they were again, stumbling, and cursing about the “damn wilderness.”

They amused her to no end and there was one individual in this caravan that caught her fancy. He was a young man, no more than 22, with dark brown hair and a strong muscular back. She couldn’t see anymore of him, her view was blocked by an incredibly large man, with a monumental backside. She moved a large leaf out of her way and leaned forward to get a better view of the young human.

A twig snapped behind her and she whirled around her nails ready to slash the enemy. A strong hand caught her hand and she sighed with relief.

“Xander! You scared me!” she smacked him on the arm and he winced, “Don’t you ever do that to me again!”

“What are you doing Willow?” Xander crept up beside her and watched the slow caravan. “They’re fools! All of them. How can you find them so fascinating? They’re so primitive. You waste your time on them, besides Graham is looking for you.”

Willow rolled her eyes, and ignored him. The humans were far more interesting at this point, and the large man had moved and given her a better view of the brown stranger.

“Angel! Come help Miss Cordelia with her bag.” The young man turned and hurried back to a young girl with auburn curls. Willow smiled, Angel. So that was his name. She watched admiringly as he effortlessly lifted the overstuffed bag over his head and onto his back. He started to walk away, but stopped and looked towards her hiding place. Willow fell back and knocked over Xander. Xander scrambled to his feet and pulled her up beside him and they quickly crept away from the humans.

Angel squinted against the sun into the bushes. He could have sworn that someone was watching him. A hand waved in front of his face, and he blinked at his best friend. “Hello, Angel? What’s so interesting about a bush.” Angel smiled at William and laughed. “I thought I saw something, this heat must be playing tricks on my head.” William laughed and walked on, leaving Angel to take one last look at the dense bushes. He shook his head after a few minutes of quiet, and hurried to catch up with the caravan.

*~*~*~*~*

Willow and Xander walked hurriedly towards the compound. Graham was not going to be pleased. Willow rolled her eyes, and thought about her rigid fiance. She had been betrothed to Graham at the age of three, a union that would put an end to a bitter war between their two kingdoms. Considering their advanced technology the union was thought by most to be a very medieval means of reconciliation. Despite the inconvenience to her, the betrothal had kept peace between her people and his.

The Mountain came into view and Willow and Xander entered the compound, nodding at the guards as they passed. A loud voice carried over the gentle murmurs of the people, and Willow smirked as Graham’s red face came into view. He was screaming at one of his soldiers, but he paused when he saw Willow and Xander. He glared at her and turned back to the flustered soldier, “You may go.”

Willow smiled kindly at the soldier as he hurried past, Graham was always harder on his troops when she left the compound without telling anyone. Graham glanced at Xander and raised an eyebrow. Xander rolled his eyes and looked at Willow sympathetically, before leaving her to deal with Graham alone.

“Where were you, Willow? I thought we talked about this, you don’t go anywhere without telling me first.” Graham scowled at her angrily and she smiled sweetly at him.

“Graham we didn’t talk about it, you decided that I wouldn’t go anywhere without telling you first. I decided you were delusional and wrote it off as the irrational demands of a man on the brink of insanity.” Willow smirked at him as his faced flushed to a deep crimson. He glared at her once before stalking off to yell at one of his generals.

Willow threw her head back and laughed, Graham made it so easy for her, the insults just rolled off her tongue when ever he was near. She struggled to control her mirth as Xander approached her. “I don’t know what you said to him, but it worked. He probably won’t talk to you for a week.”

Willow laughed and rolled her eyes good naturedly, “How will I ever survive.”

Xander‘s smile grew as a particularly evil idea entered his head and he smiled wickedly at Willow “Now if you really wanted to make Graham mad we could go spy on the human’s.” He wiggled his eyebrows at her and she grinned.

“I’ll race you.” Willow crouched down, and smiled at Xander. “On your mark, get set, GO!” Willow shoved Xander to the ground before taking off. “Cheater!” Xander yelled as he struggled to his feet and ran after her.
