QUE SERA, SERA (2/?)
Cordelia put the glass back down as she leaned back in the chair.
"That was
good."
"Yeah, not that bad," Faith said, putting her fork back on her plate.
"Where can we go next?" Willow asked, her tone impatient.
"Aren't you tired yet?" Faith asked, amused at the girl's obvious
joy in the
most boring things.
"No!" Willow said, having to smile. "I know you both think I'm weird,
but
this is the last time I'll probably ever have a chance to visit
Rome and I
just don't want to miss anything."
"Well, then, why are we sitting here?" Cordelia asked, tossing her
napkin on
the table and standing. She straightened her skirt and headed towards
the
street. "Let's play tourist."
"If we do everything today, what are we going to do for three more
weeks?"
Faith asked, laughing as Willow smacked her arm. "Hey now, watch
who you're
hitting little girl."
"Whatever, slayer," Willow said, smiling as she moved to avoid Faith's
hand.
It had taken her several weeks before she had accepted the new
slayer. But,
now, they were very good friends. After Buffy had met Jamie eight
months
before, well, the blonde had started having more to do and Willow
had found
herself moving into a very close friendship with the single slayer.
She had
watched Faith go through men like kleenex, claiming she got bored
easily.
Willow knew the girl was was searching for love, even if she was
in denial.
So far, no man had been able to keep her interest. Willow knew
Faith was very
proud of her sexual prowess but the redhead somehow doubted the
truth to the
stories.
"Hey, what's that thing?" Cordelia asked, pointing to the fountain
in front
of them.
"Eh, pretty lady." A man moved in front of them. "That is the fountain
of
Treve."
"I've heard of it," Willow said, searching through her mind to remember
the
story behind it.
"It's big," Faith said, not very impressed by the large thing.
"Oh, pretty ladies, you must toss in a coin. Make a wish and one
day you will
return to Rome," the elderly man said, nodding in encouragement.
"A wishing fountain?" Cordelia said, rolling her eyes. "As if. I've
lost many
a penny to that fountain at the mall and none of my wishes have
ever come
true."
"That's right!" Willow said, laughing, "It is a wishing well. I've
heard
stories about it. I think there was even some movie..."
"Well, couldn't hurt," Faith said, putting her hand in the front
pocket of
her pants to find a coin. "Damn, I thought I had a coin."
"Here, pretty ladies. This wish will be on Mario," the elderly man
said,
holding his palm out with three bright coins shining at them.
"Oh, we couldn't," Willow said, smiling at him. She saw the sparkle
in his
blue eyes and knew he would insist. "Fine. Thank you, Mario."
"I don't believe in making some stupid wishes," Cordelia grumbled,
taking the
coin when Willow glared at her.
The three girls moved to the side of the fountain, each lost in
their own
worlds. Cordelia looked into the water, seeing the other coins
shining in the
sunlight. She sighed, knowing that this was pointless. She didn't
even
believe in wishing wells. She tossed the coin high into the air,
her mind
suddenly flashing to an image of her and Xander sitting on a sofa,
years in
the future with children running around them. She smiled softly,
lost in this
common dream as the coin fell into the water.
Faith frowned, having no idea what to wish. What could she wish
for? What did
she really want? She thought of the day they had spent in Rome.
It had been
fun, in its own way. She really did like Willow and even Cordelia
wasn't that
bad. But, three weeks of museums and fountains? She'd die of boredom.
She
suddenly smiled, deciding on her wish. She threw the coin into
the fountain,
wishing for a true adventure while in Rome. She wanted to have
fun and
remember this trip until she died. She saw the coin settle onto
the bottom of
the fountain and smiled.
Willow didn't want anything. She was happy with her life and everything
lately. She watched Faith toss her coin, curious as to what was
causing the
gleam in the slayer's dark eyes. She then looked at Cordelia as
the girl
tossed her own coin, a serene look on her face as she appeared
to be lost in
her thoughts. Willow knew what to wish. She tossed her coin into
the air,
wishing for her all of her friends to be happy. She saw it hit
the water and
make a small splash as it slowly settled to the bottom. As she
watched it,
the face of the man she loved drifted into her thoughts before
she pushed it
away. She wouldn't think of him, knowing that she should not worry
about what
she would never have. She turned to face Faith and Cordelia, a
smile on her
face. "So, what next?"
