One last glance. That was all it was.

Yet in that glance, his entire life at Sunnydale had flashed through his mind. And, for a brief moment, he looked past his love. The group of Slayerettes looked shell-shocked. He barely knew any of them; yet, he knew them better than they knew him. As his eyes swept past the students and Watcher, they rested for a moment on Willow. The hacker, the witch, and the soul of the entire group. He had gone to her house once.

He was so jealous and suspicious of Buffy’s new friend. With good reason, he found out, eventually. But she invited him into her home and helped him. He had saved her life before, but she wasn’t one to see that as a debt. She did it because she liked him and wanted to help him.

Even after he had lost his soul, she proved herself a friend. Twice she attempted the soul curse. The first time, his childe had interrupted the ritual and nearly killed the girl.

The second time, she had just come out of a coma. A coma! She tried the ritual again, this time, successfully. She was a few minutes too late, but it was hardly her fault.

And now she stood there, her eyes saying her goodbyes for her. He wanted to run and hug her. A woman who would always be pure.

He knew, somehow, that she would never, could never, be corrupted. His eyes swept across the small group one last time, and he smiled, internally. They would be all right without him.
