Harder to Breathe

Author: Angel S.

Disclaimer: The show belongs to Joss and Co. Trust me, if I owned any of it, I guarantee Spike never would've thought he was in love with Buffy. That B/S stuff is just that: B.S. The song is from Maroon5's debut CD 'Songs About Jane' called, you guessed it: "Harder to Breathe" I flat out LOVE this song, and had to do something with it.

Pairing: W/S (as always)

Summary: He's really done with the nonsense from S5 & S6. He realizes that he never loved her. He loves someone else.

She'd been talking about herself for the past half hour. He'd tuned her out about 25 minutes ago. He'd been doing that a lot lately. His attention had been wandering to the strong yet silent redhead. He liked watching Red. She had no need to try to be the center of attention. Her quiet grace, intelligence and beauty were enough for him to be completely enraptured.

"Spike!" The blonde slayer yelled at the vampire who was no longer focused on her.

"I heard you the first 5 times, slayer." The vampire answered. He stood and stretched. "You've repeatedly told us how you managed to fight the nasty demon and barely escape with your life. You then spent 2 minutes on a description before going back to talking about Buffy."

Anya laughed out loud. His peripheral vision noticed the hacker covering a chuckle. Spike smirked. He'd made her smile.

The slayer stood in shock with her jaw dropped open.

"Um, guys," Willow said, trying to intercept a particularly bad scene. "It's a No'oram demon. Simple decapitation should work."

"What the hell is going on with you?" Buffy asked Spike in a quiet yet stern voice that no one else could hear.

"I'm actually awake, Buffy." He replied.

How dare you say that my behavior is unacceptable?
So condescending unnecessarily critical
I have the tendency of getting very physical
So watch your step 'cause if I do you'll need a
miracle

"Spike," Giles inquired. "I-is there some sort of problem?"

"Yes," The vampire replied. "Why aren't we out looking for this thing?"

"Fine," Buffy said. "We'll patrol. Spike, you come with me."

"Don't you think it'd be better if the two people with super strength brought others who don't have it?" Spike asked, with annoyance in his voice.

"I have to agree with Spike, for once." Giles stated. No one opposed his judgment, so he went on. "Great, Xander and Anya, Spike and Willow, and Buffy and myself."

Everyone grabbed a weapon and headed out, leaving a stunned slayer in his or her wake.

You drain me dry and make me wonder why I'm even here
This double vision I was seeing is finally clear
You want to stay but you know very well I want gone
Not fit to fuckin' tread the ground that I am walking
on

Willow and Spike had become really good friends following the death of the slayer. They would talk for hours after everyone else had gone to sleep. When Buffy was brought back, Spike decided to continue his obsession of the blonde. Tonight was their first time in a situation to be talkative and comfortable around each other in quite a while. Therefore, it wasn't difficult to imagine the two talking about anything and everything. Finally, Willow had to ask.

"So, why the change in attitude?" Willow asked.

"Never could put anything past you, could I, Red?"

She stopped walking. "Seriously. What's happened?"

"I opened my eyes." He said with a smirk.

"You're not in love with her anymore?" Willow asked, genuinely interested.

"I don't think I ever was." He replied. "How can you love someone who uses you for sex, and then calls you a 'thing'?"

"Oh." Willow answered in shock. ~Would she really do that to someone?~

"Don't worry." He said, as he saw the realization and concern wash over her. "I'm back to being the Big Bad." He said with his trademark smirk. ^I made her smile again! Now, if only she'll believe that I'm completely done with Slutty the vampire layer.^

Little did they know that everyone else's patrol had ended. Buffy was on her way to talk to Spike when she overheard this little conversation.

When it gets cold outside and ya got nobody to love
You'll understand what I mean when I say
There's no way we're gonna give up
Like a little girl cries in the face of a monster that
lives in her dreams
Is there anyone out there 'cause it's getting harder
and harder to breathe
Is there anyone out there 'cause it's getting harder
and harder to breathe

The slayer left the cover of the bushes and headed over to two still patrolling.

"What's this?" She asked nonchalantly.

"Patrol." Willow said. "You were at the Magic Box."

"Patrol was done almost an hour ago." Buffy said, as her glare turned towards Spike.

"I guess we must've really enjoyed the conversation Red, because time just flew by, didn't it?" Spike said to the redhead.

"Why don't we walk Willow home?" The slayer said. "We need to talk."

"Actually, I'm sure I can make it home all by myself, guys." Willow said, suddenly finding the situation more uncomfortable than it would normally be.

"Actually," Spike said, emphasizing the word. "I was having a nice time with Willow, and I would like to continue the conversation."

"Really?" Willow asked.

Buffy glared.

What you are doing is screwing things up inside my
head
You should know better you never listened to a word I
said
Clutching your pillow and writhing in a naked sweat
Hoping somebody someday will do you like I did

"Spike!" Buffy finally protested.

"Buffy!" He mocked her tone. "Gods, you're starting to sound like Harm." He started walking away. "Willow? Are you going to let me walk you home?" He asked softly after he stopped and looked her in the eyes.

"Sure." She said. "I'd like it a lot."

The slayer stormed off in the opposite direction.

"You realize I'll never hear the end of this, right?" The witch asked the vampire.

"And you think I will?" Spike replied.

"I mean really," Willow continued. "How self centered can someone be to treat another person the way she treated you?"

"That's just it, Red." Spike replied sadly. "I'm not a person."

"That's bullshit, Spike!" She replied furiously.

Spike looked at the fire in her eyes and stared in awe. "I KNOW you have feelings. I also know that she stomped on them like they were... well... something that shouldn't be stomped on!" she finished the sentence less irately. Then, she noticed his smirk. "What's so funny?" She asked, a little embarrassed at her behavior.

"You're beautiful." He simply said honestly. The redhead blushed.

"So," a voice said from behind them. "Just like that, you don't love me anymore?" Buffy strode to the couple. "You love Willow? Is this some sick plan to get back at me?"

"Please believe me when I say that everything is NOT about you, slayer." Spike said, visibly irritated. "And with the way you treat me, why do you care?"

"Fine." Buffy said. "You're right. I did all of it for my own benefit and never wanted to admit to having anything to do with you." She sighed. "That was wrong. I promise not to cause any kinds of problems between you two." She smiled at her best friend. "Hell, I'll even run interference with Xander on this one."

"On what one?" Will asked. "And what problems?"

"O-kay." The slayer replied. "On that note, I'm headed home." She faced Spike. "Looks like you two need to talk."

"Buffy," Spike called out as the slayer started to walk away. "Thank you."

"Don't thank me." She replied. "It's the least I can do after everything that's happened." With that, she slowly walked away thinking about the blonde vampire with respect.

"I know I have a high IQ and everything," Willow started. "But, what did I just miss?"

"You just missed her letting me go." He said with a soft smile.

"No, I saw that part." The redhead replied.

"Oh, and that other little part about me being crazy in love with you."

"What?"
