KEEPING TABS

Fate looked around the cemetery. It had taken him much longer to get back to Sunnydale than he had originally imagined. It had been 63 years. He was very late. 63 years since he had changed the destiny of a cute redhead and a blond vampire. He thought of them and smiled. After all these years, their case was still one of his favorites.

He moved to the tombstone and ran his hand over the words.

Willow A. Rosenberg
1980-2001
May you live on forever in our hearts

The two had had a fantastic year together before tragedy struck. Willow had been helping the slayer when she had been attacked. She hadn't made it out of the room alive.

Fate stepped back as he heard a noise. Someone moved in the darkness. A blond head appeared and moved to the tombstone. He smiled softly before turning to the one beside it. This one read

Buffy A Summers
1980-2063
Rest in Peace dear Friend

"Slayer....you lasted longer than I thought you would."

"Can you believe it was old age that killed her? A slayer dieing of old age. Who would have thunk it?" a soft voice spoke behind him.

Spike turned and smiled at his redhead Goddess. Willow came forward and took his hand. Red tears were in her eyes.

"I wish she had been buried at night. I would have liked to have been there."

"Luv, night isn't the safest time to be in the cemetery. The slayer knew you could come by afterwards."

"I know." she went forward and laid a bouquet of flowers on the ground. "Good-bye Buffy. I miss you."

She stood and joined her mate. "So, where to now?"

"I was thinking maybe Rome. We haven't been there in years."

"Oh....that would be lovely. Could we stop off and see Angel? He is still in Venice."

Spike grumbled. "Why do you want to see that Poof? Sure....if you insist."

Willow smiled. "I'll call him tomorrow and tell him to expect us."

She took one last look at the cemetery. Her eyes seeing the graves of all her old friends. Rupert, Xander, Oz, Cordelia and now Buffy.

"Rest in peace, friends." she whispered before leaving. She knew she would not be back.

Fate smiled. After all these years, those two still were some of his favorites. He said a small prayer for the fallen slayer. She was the reason he had returned to Sunnydale. He wanted to say goodbye. Looking after Spike and Willow, he decided that he would have to remember to check up on them again in a few years. He waved his and disappeared.
