FORGIVENESS

"Why are you doing this?"

He shrugged his broad shoulders and cocked his head to the side considering the question with a look of boredom on his chiseled face.  "Because I can."

She felt her lips begin to tremble and a sob rising in her throat.  She swallowed it down desperately believing that once the conversation stopped
the killing would start.  Again.

"We helped you..I..I loved you."

He smiled softly, a warm and gentle smile.  "I know you did."

"Don't you..feel anything?"

He stretched as he exhaled a long white cloud of cigarette smoke.  "Like what?"

It was her turn to shrug "Regret?  Conflict?  Guilt?"

She jumped and moaned softly as his large booted feet suddenly slammed down forcefully against the floor from their resting place on the rickety card table.  "No. I. Don't" he snarled glaring at her with suddenly golden eyes.

"There's nothing I can do is there?  Nothing I can say?"  She asked hopelessly dropping her gaze.

He was smiling again, she could hear it in his voice when he answered "You always were the smart one, Red."

She allowed her shoulders to slump in defeat as she began to offer a final prayer to the gods for her soul and the souls of all those she loved, now
lying dead and dying about her on the filthy floor.

She closed her beautiful green eyes as she felt him stand and move behind her.  He pushed her long, red hair away from the side of her neck as he
flicked a cold tongue over the sensitive skin between her jaw and throat.

Knowing that a struggle would be of no use, she leaned back compliantly in his arms as he sunk his long fangs into the tender white skin of her throat.

As she felt her life slipping gently away her eyes fluttered closed for the final time.  With the last of her strength she sighed and said three words
that haunted him for an eternity afterwards.

"I forgive you."
