Obviously Oblivious

By Robin the Crossover Junkie

They made an interesting picture. Spike, pale, with white-blonde hair and light blue eyes, wearing the deepest blacks from head to toe, and Xander, tanned, with deep brown hair and almost-black brown eyes, wearing a white T-shirt and pale khaki pants. Light on dark on light, as they stared into each other's eyes from across the room. It was obvious to anyone who bothered to look that they were together. That Spike's own fashion sense had bled onto Xander, or that Spike had picked out Xander's clothing, or just that Xander wanted to dress up nice for Spike. It was obvious that the looks they gave each other spoke of warm nights filled with writhing, sweat, panting, cries, love, maybe even snuggling. That the looks they gave each other were filled with lust and haste to leave, to finally be alone again so that they could go and ravish one another somewhere private.

It was in the way they didn't speak, only allowed themselves glances of one another, and the tiny smile on each one's face whenever their eyes met. It was in the almost blinding light shining between them when they shared a glance. It was in the small blush that crept up Xander's cheeks whenever Spike quirked his scarred eyebrow up in a silent question.

Xander moved around the room, tidying shelves, wiping dust off of books, and chatting with Willow off and on. Spike sat silently beside Dawn, half-listening as she chattered to him about her day. However, their eyes never lost track of one another, silently keeping watch. Spike was positioned against a wall, so that he could look over Dawn's shoulder at the rest of the shop, so that he could watch Xander, while Xander kept looking his way as he fluttered around the room.

Nobody noticed the glances, the blushes, the eyebrows that quirked. Nobody noticed Xander's white clothing, the warm nights, the lust and haste. Nobody noticed the smiles, the similarities, the obvious attraction.

Spike left when the sun set below the horizon, billowing out the door with a flourish, exclaiming that he needed to smoke, to kill something, to walk, to be out in the night, and to drink. Xander spent the next five minutes obsessively checking his watch, the door, and then making sure no one saw him check his watch or the door. Exactly five minutes and 3 seconds later, he announced that he had some things to do at home and was leaving. After short goodbyes, he practically ran from the room, out the door, and around the corner, where Spike was waiting for him. They kissed roughly before leaving for Xander's apartment, and it was obvious that they were together.

Willow came up to me and gave me a quick kiss. "Wanna go, Tara?" she asked, and I nodded silently, grinning at my lover.

Spike and Xander had shared intimate glances all day, and a steamy kiss just outside the door, and no one noticed. That they were madly in love, and undoubtedly together, was obvious. So why wasn't it obvious to anyone but me?
