KINDRED SPIRITS
Spike rode down the deserted road for hours. It was 3:00am and he was thinking of Buffy.
She probably didn’t even care. She was probably happy. He was out of her hair for a couple of months. He knew the letter that he wrote Dawn had sounded like he was saying goodbye, but he just wanted whatever was to be said to be said, just incase. He loved them both more than anything; he never wanted to hurt them. He knew Dawn cared, but he wasn’t so sure about Buffy.
Buffy sat in her room crying she had already started to miss him and it had only been one week. She wanted him to be there, to hold her in his arms. But he was gone, he had said that he was coming back in a month or two, but she had the feeling it would be longer. Dawn walked into her room and noticed Buffy was crying,
“Don’t worry Buffy, he’ll be back.”
Dawn was taking this badly, you could see that they are related. Well in a sense.
Buffy missed him, even his cockiness and his pigheadedness.
She hadn’t told the others, it was too hard. She hadn’t even seen any of them since he left. She was too upset.
Spike finally reached the Dr.’s house and walked up slowly to the door. It had been a long time since he had seen him, and he hoped he recognized him. Spike was weak and hadn’t eaten (drunk) anything since he left Sunnydale, and he was tired. He knocked gently and an old man came to the door,
“Hello…oh my God William?”
Well that answered that question,
“Hello, Charlie, long time no see.”
Charlie beckoned him inside,
“Well, well, well, William, looking the same as ever.”
“I wish I could say the same for you.”
The old man laughed,
“So what brings you here to my humble domain?”
Spike sat down,
“Well I’m in a bit of a mess, two years ago, the initiative, a bunch of commando wannabe’s stuck this chip in my head which enables me to feed on humans or even hurt them.”
Charlie nodded his head,
“I see and now you’ve had enough and want it out?”
Spike shook his head,
“I’ve become friends with the slayer, well I’m in love with her. I also love her little sister that is like a sister or daughter to me. I love them both. Nothing else in my miserable existence matters to me, but my girls. My chip doesn’t work anymore, and I know I should be ecstatic, but I’m not. I’m scared that I will hurt them. Can you help me?”
Charlie laughed,
“Well, you’re in love, you love her sister like a sister, and you’re scared you’re gonna hurt them, well…are you sure you’re William the bloody, the rogue who cared for nothing, loved nothing except the joy of killing things?”
Spike laughed,
“I know, I don’t even know who I am anymore.”
Charlie smiled,
“It’s about time you got a heart, excuse the pun. So you really love them?”
Spike smiled at the thought of them,
“With all my heart, and her friends, well I like them too.”
“Are you involved with the slayer?”
Spike laughed,
“No, she shot me down a lot. Then she died, came back and now we’re friends.”
Charlie smiled, obviously William had changed.
“Do you believe in kindred spirits?”
Spike thought for a moment.
“I guess I do.”
Charlie smiled knowingly, it had take this vampire over one hundred years to find his kindred spirit. No wonder he was willing to change himself for her. It was his destiny.
“I will help you because your love for them is true.”
Spike nodded,
“But how?”
Charlie smiled, he was gonna give Spike a conscience and he was gonna make him hate killing humans, but he would still drink their blood.
Charlie knew a person needed a soul to have a conscience, but to him Spike had more of a soul than many people he knew did.
This would be a long and tiring process, Spike would stay exactly the same except if he hurt somebody he would feel remorse and in turn wouldn’t do it again, he would stay Spike, except the part about always wanting to eat humans, he would be like a man.
It had been two and a half weeks since he left.
Buffy walked into the magic box, after Spike had left she returned to her depressed state.
All her friends were there, they were talking and as soon as they saw her they stopped. She looked terrible, her hair was droopy, her eyes were puffy and she slumped along aimlessly. Her heart ached and she wanted to cry all the time. She still hadn’t told them he left.
“Hey Buffy”
Said Xander trying to sound cheerful
“Hey”
She sat down next to Willow and Willow stared at her lost friend.
“So any scary, spooky and nasty things around?” Willow finally asked,
“No, just vampires.”
She said as she remembered her favorite blonde vampire.
A tear fell and she wiped it away.
Xander tried to cheer her up,
“So, uh, haven’t seen Evil dead around lately, what ever happened to your protector and confidant?”
Xander knew Buffy liked insulting Spike, so she thought this would cheer her up, he was wrong, very wrong.
Suddenly Buffy burst into tears and threw her head down into her lap, why did he have to bring him up.
“Xander look what you’ve done.”
Said Willow comforting Buffy,
“Hey, what did I do, I only asked where Spike was?”
Buffy heard this and started to cry harder, even hearing his name was unbearable.
They were astounded at how much she cried,
“What’s wrong Buffy?” asked Tara sincerely
Buffy looked at them with red puffy eyes and a tear-streaked face,
“He’s gone, till the end of the world. He remembered, why didn’t I admit it to him. I’m such a wuss.”
They all stared at her, she didn’t make sense.
Just then Dawn walked in and stared at Buffy, she knew why she was crying and Dawn started to cry as well. Buffy got up and ran to Dawn, the hugged tightly.
The rest of the Scoobies watched as the two sisters balled their eyes out over their lost friend.
Buffy wiped her eyes, she had to be strong for Dawn, and Spike would have wanted it that way.
Dawn also stopped, she was sick of everyone always seeing her cry, so she pulled herself together. Dawn suddenly smiled at Buffy and held up an envelope. It was from Spike.
Buffy gave a shrill of excitement and held in her hands. It was unopened and she was afraid of what it would say. She opened it carefully and began to read it to Dawn out loud:
Dearest Niblit,
How are you?
I miss you so much, I always think of you and wish you were here with me. I am scared shitless (Just don’t tell anyone else that) I wish you were here to hold my hand. I hope Buffy is ok, tell her I was asking how she was. The Doc is gonna do something for me, to help. I can’t tell you what; it’s quite weird. I hope all the Scoobies are well, don’t tell them but I actually miss them. Especially Xander, I have no one to verbally abuse anymore. I hope you understand why I left, I couldn't handle it if I hurt you or Buffy. Love you and tell Buffy that she is always in my heart.
All my love, Forever
Spike
Buffy started to cry and so did Dawn, why did he have to be so sweet?
All the Scoobies finally clicked, Spike had left.
Buffy wiped her eyes,
“He left ‘cause his chip stopped working and he was scared he would loose control and hurt us, he went to some doctor to help him. He says he will be back, in a month, but that was a month ago.”
Willow got up and hugged her and Tara and Anya joined them. They were all kinda sad he had left. Xander sat where he was dumbfounded.
Buffy looked at them,
“He wrote in the first letter, till the end of the world. I wish I had told him that I loved him.”
They all looked surprised,
“You loved him?”
Asked Willow,
“Yes” she said quietly.
“What does ‘till the end of the world mean?” Asked Xander
“Just before I died I asked him to look after Dawn, he said ‘till the end of the world’, that was when I realized that I loved him.”
Willow hugged her,
“I knew you did long ago.”
“Yeah we could see it when you looked at him and when you were around him.”
They all stared at Xander who had said this, it was surprising.
“It’s not like I approve.”
He said defensively.
They all sat down and tried to comfort Buffy, Dawn sat next to Buffy. Dawn missed Spike so much she thought she couldn’t breath. She often went to his crypt to see if he was back, she always hoped that she would see him there, smoking with a bottle of bourbon. She missed the smell of him, and she missed how annoying he could be sometimes, but she loved him and she knew that Buffy did too.
Spike sat alone in the basement of the Doctors house, he was crying. In one hand he held the photo of Dawn and himself that she had given him as a gift to show him how much she cared. On the back was written, Thank-you for being my protector and friend, my best friend forever, Love Dawn. (Niblit)
And in his other hand he held the photo of Buffy. He was remembering how broken he had been when she died. He could just see her broken body lying there, so peaceful, so serene. He had cried like a baby that day, he didn’t care that he had made a fool of himself in front of the Scoobies. He had loved her so much and then she was gone. Taken away from him like everything else that ever mattered to him. From that day he knew he would never be the same. But then she was brought back to him, he would never forget the moment he walked into the room and saw her there, he had to hold back the sobs. She was different though, quiet and withdrawn. But she had opened up to him, let him in, she let him be her friend. And that was more than he ever wanted.
The walked up to him,
“Well, I need you to go and get more ingredients and then we’re finished. We can to the spell tomorrow night.”
Spike got up and went across town to get the rest of the ingredients. He wouldn’t go back to Sunnydale for a while, ‘cause first he had to get used to having a conscience, it had scared him. The doctor had agreed to let him stay, he owed that to spike for saving his life a couple of times in the old days. Spike really did miss Buffy and Dawn, he felt guilty for leaving Dawn like this. Buffy he didn’t worry about, he was sick of her shooting him down. He needed some time without humiliation. Without pain, to sort out his non-life.
He was scared about tomorrow night, he needed a friend, he needed his only and best friend, he needed Dawn.
Buffy knew deep down that he would be back, he swore to her, ‘Till the end of the world’
He meant it and he would be back, but she missed him and needed him, his support, and his love.
Dawn was sitting in the lounge watching TV. The phone rang and she answered it,
“Hello?”
It was silent on the other end,
“Niblit?”
Dawn screamed with happiness, it had been so long since she had heard his voice,
“Oh my God, Spike, I’ve missed you, when are you coming back?”
Buffy heard his name and ran into the lounge, she saw the excited look on Dawn’s face as she spoke on the phone.
“Spike…I got your letter, it was sweet, it made Buffy and I cry.”
Spike sounded surprised,
“Buffy was crying?”
“Yeah, she really misses you.”
Spike smiled to himself,
“I miss her too, I miss both of you.”
“So how is getting fixed up? Are you coming home yet?”
“It’s fine, we’re doing the spell tonight, I’m as nervous as hell.”
“Um, I don’t know how to say this but…Buffy was reading the letter out loud to me, and all the Scoobies, especially Xander heard about what you said.”
Spike laughed,
“Well there goes my reputation as the big bad.”
Dawn laughed; she loved him so much.
Dawn looked up at Buffy and Buffy asked to speak to him,
“Well Buffy wants to say hi, I miss you.”
“I miss you too, Niblit. And just know that I love you.”
Dawn started to cry and he tried to be strong,
“I love you too Spike.” She handed the phone to Buffy,
“Hi Spike.” She said quietly,
“Well hello Slayer.”
It felt so goo to hear his voice,
“How are you doing?” Buffy was so nervous,
“I’ve been better, but the thought of coming home to you and Dawn keeps me going.”
Buffy started to cry softly,
“When you coming home?”
“I don’t know, it could be a couple of days or a couple of months or who knows maybe even a couple of years.”
Buffy started to cry and he heard, he felt so sad,
“But don’t worry, you know I can’t stay away for that long. Buffy I meant what I said, ‘Til the end of the world’ I love you and Dawn. You’re my life and I can’t live without my life. Even though I’m not technically alive.”
Buffy smiled
“Just come back soon, I miss…having to kick your ass.”
Spike smiled, he knew what she meant,
“I love you Buffy, ‘til the end of the world.”
“I know, goodbye Spike.”
Spike put the phone down; Charlie was standing behind him,
“They must be an amazing couple of girls.”
“You have no idea.”
Charlie smiled, it was amazing it was as if William did have a soul after all.
“We should start getting ready, are you sire your ready?”
Spike smiled, Buffy and Dawns words rang in his head,
“If I’m not ready now, I’ll never be.”
Buffy and Dawn sat there shocked as they cried together. Dawn looked at Buffy,
“When’s he coming back?”
“He doesn’t know.”
Dawn was confused how long would this spell take,
“The spell is being done tonight, so why can’t he just come home tomorrow?”
Buffy didn’t know the answer, but she trusted Spike and loved him. He’d be back.
Later that night, Spike sat in a circle of sand, there were ancient symbols on the floor and Charlie began to read out of a big black book in Latin, Spike understood what he was reading he read:
This soulless evil once did hate,
Has turned to love, a different fate.
Give him feelings, that he once knew,
And give him a conscience like humans do.
Let him feel remorse, love and anger,
And from now on, he is no danger.
For the love he has is true and pure,
Feeding on humans now has no lure.
Do not let him on a human feed,
Because from now on has no need.
He finds blood another day,
For hurting humans is not his way.
Let him protect the ones he holds so dear,
For now with love, he has no fear.
Suddenly Spike jolted and the wind began to blow. The sand that was once around him was blown up into the air and Spike fell to the floor, unconscious.
