Spike sat by the bar all by himself. He was lonely and needed a friend. He sometimes wishes he wasn’t a vampire, that he was dead along time ago. That he never met Dru, or Buffy or any of the other Scoobies. He is tired of his unlife. He is tired, so he rubs his eyes to open them up and on the tip of his finger, there lies an eyelash. He smiles as he remembers what his mother used to tell him to do when he found an eyelash as a child.
“Put it on the tip of your finger, make a wish. And blow it off your finger. If it doesn’t move then your wish won’t come true, but if it flies off into the wind, it will come true and you could have anything you ever wanted.”
He smiles, closes his eyes and thinks of a wish,
“I wish that I had never been turned into a vampire.”
He blows and the little eyelash flies of his finger and disappears. He smiles as he leaves the bar and heads home to the comfort of his crypt.
A noise wakes him up in the middle of the night and he looks around for the intruder. There in the middle of the room stood Dawn. Spike sighs and sits up looking over at her,
“Dawn, what the hell are you doing here?”
She shakes her head and her long brown hair sways.
Spike stands up and puts a shirt over his bare chest,
“Does Buffy know you’re here? She’s gonna have a fit you know.”
He looks at her and notices something different,
“Dawn?”
The little girl shakes her head again,
“I might be Dawn, but I am merely your guide, Spike. You made a wish and I am going to show you what would happen.”
Spike rubs his eyes,
“I don’t understand.”
She giggles,
“Spike, it is me. But the me of an alternate universe, I’m here to show you what would be happening to us all if you were never turned.”
Spike nods as a bright light engulfs them and they appear on the snow-covered grounds of Sunnydale cemetery,
“There is what is left of your precious crypt Spike.”
Spike looked at the empty ground where it once stood. The ground was full of black rubble,
“Where did it go?”
He asks.
She smiles and laughs,
“Buffy accidentally knocked it down while fighting a demon. She had no reason to let it stand.”
Spike smiles and follows Dawn in her white dress into another part of the cemetery, there he stood in front of Dawn’s grave. Spike felt the tears rise in his throat but he held them back.
The Dawn looked at him and shook her head,
“You weren’t there to protect me, so when Glory got me I died.”
She points to another grave, Joyce Summers.
Spike is confused,
“She still died of an aneurysm?”
She shakes her head,
“Angel killed her, because there was no you, he was never given his soul.”
Spike clenched his fists,
“I killed her?”
She giggled and twirled around in a circle until the bright light caught them again. They were in a hospital and Xander lay on a bed, with tubes and bandages all over him,
“He was in a fight with a demon, Buffy couldn’t help him. He’s been like this for 3 months.”
Spike looked down at Xander and hung his head down as he listened to the beeps of the heart monitor. Suddenly the monitor sounded a longs flat line sound. Spike’s eyes flew open and he jumped for Xander, but he passed right through him,
“You are unable to help here Spike. You are only an audience. You wished this, didn’t you?”
Spike shook his head as the tears threatened again,
“No, I didn’t want this.”
Dawn began to giggle again as she twirled in a circle and again they were surrounded by a bright light.
He looked into the window of the old Summer’s house, it was a pile of ashes, black marks filled the walls and a yellow tape surrounded it.
“It was burnt down by some vampires. You could of stopped them.”
Spike shook his head, unable to contain his sadness,
“What about Buffy?”
She smiled at him,
“I’m saving her for last, you asked for this, and you’re getting this.”
She twirled once again and they stopped inside of Willow’s dorm room. There lay Willow, black candles surrounded her, her face was empty of life. Her bones stuck out of her face and hands. She was so thin. She had rings around her eyes and her lips were dry and swollen,
“Come to me the powers of darkness, my lords of evil.”
Spike watched as she was engulfed in black smoke and as she bowed down to a huge demon, black in colour. She raised her hands up to it and Spike watched in horror as she gave to him a human hand.
She smiled,
“You gave her the inspiration to be a good witch. You will later on give her some very important advice. Without it, she is lost and without you, she has turned to the evil side.”
She pointed to a lifeless body in the corner of the room, Tara lay dead, with one hand missing.
Spike put his hand to his mouth and had to blink a few times.
She laughed again and twirled until they were on the street corner, Anya stood, with a short mini-skirt in black leather, a black leather halter top on. She had black fishnet stockings and knee high boots on. Her hair was long and messy and she had too much makeup on. A car stopped beside her and she spoke to a man until finally getting into his car,
“IS she a…”
Spike began.
“Prostitute.”
Dawn finished.
Spike shook his head,
“Why?”
She shrugged,
“Xander died and she had no one left. She turned to drugs and prostitution. You see you saved Xander’s life many times, so when you weren’t there, he was killed. As you saw.”
Spike turned to her and stared at her angrily,
“Why are you here? Why are you showing me these things?”
She smiled,
“You wished it. Now to Buffy.”
She twirled while still laughing merrily and the fell onto some grass, in a park. Buffy sat on the floor, her back up against a tree, surrounded by vampires.
“Buffy, get up!”
Spike shouted, but she could not hear him,
“Why is she like this?”
“It was the same for all of them, they gave up. She gave up after Dawn and her mother died. She sees no point in living. You would have been there to help her overcome that. But you don’t exist. So she dies.”
One of the vampires lifted her own stake to her and plunged it into her and she screamed a terrible scream. Spike watched her gasp for breath, and her eyes mist over as she took a final breath.
Spike fell to the floor, unable to contain the tears,
“Not again, it’s not my fault again.”
He felt a hand on his shoulder,
“It’s not your fault. It never was. And it never will be.”
Spike was engulfed in light again as they appeared in the cemetery again, now standing in front of 7 graves. Buffy, Dawn, Willow, Tara, Xander, Anya and Joyce. They were all dead.
“What about Giles?”
Spike asked with tears running down his face.
“He died in England, I can show you his grave if you like.”
Spike burst into tears,
“No, No, I don’t want this, take me back, take me back! I’m so sorry, I never wanted you to die. No please…”
Spike broke down into tears and when he opened his eyes, he was in his bed again. He laughed at himself for getting all upset, it was only a dream.
But Dawn still stood at the bottom of his bed,
“I hope you realize how important you are Spike. You truly are.”
Spike watched her disappear and he looked out into the evening sky.
He looked at his watch, it was 8:30. Still early. He got up and got dressed, pulling on his clothes as he ran out the door.
He ran down the streets until he saw her house, it was still standing. There was a light on inside. They were all there, every one of them. Except for Giles who is in England.
He knocked on the door quietly and as Dawn answered he wrapped his arms around her,
“Thank God you’re okay.”
Dawn laughed as Spike swung her around,
“Spike, are you alright.”
Buffy was by the door watching. She didn’t say anything though, she just watched.
“Are all of you all right? Is Buffy okay? Are the Scoobies okay?”
Dawn looked worried,
“Spike, what’s wrong.”
Spike laughed and looked up at Buffy, running up the stairs he grabbed her arm and swung her around into a kiss,
“I’m so sorry for doing that, but I needed to check that you’re okay.”
She just stared at him,
“I’m fine.”
She finally managed to say. The three of them were joined by the rest of them, and Spike laughed as he saw them,
“I love you guys.”
He shouted to them.
Xander looked confused,
“Are you stoned?”
Spike laughed as he thanked the little Dawn, who had shown him his true family and friends.
