Spike lay next to Buffy on a bed in the deserted house they had seeked refuge in. His arms were wrapped around her and her head rested against his chest.  He pushed back a strand of soft, blonde hair that had fallen in front of her eyes.  They had never before held each while they slept.  If Buffy had stayed around after sex to sleep by him at all, she wouldn’t touch him.  Now a year later, here she was, asking for him to hold her.  And only that.  But it was a gesture that meant a thousand times more to him than any kiss or night of lovemaking ever could.

Spike listened to her breathe.  Her breath went in and out, steady and clear.  He knew Buffy was capable and strong, even if she doubted herself now.  He could kill the Scoobies and potentials who had thrown her out of her own house.  Not only was she the best leader they could ever have, but she was also a great friend to them, better than they deserved, the filthy bastards.  Spike closed his eyes and tried to clear his head of his anger.  Buffy didn’t need that now.  She needed support and love.  Which was what he could give her.

He felt Buffy stir and sigh.  Her eyes opened and her gaze rested on his hand, which lay cordially on her thin arm.  After a while, she glanced up at his face.  She looked into his blue eyes, barely blinking, before casting her eyes downwards.

“What a mess,” she mumbled, barely audible.

Spike’s heart sank.  He supposed it had been too much to hope he could make everything all better for Buffy.  His love for her would never be great enough to ease her pain of the betrayal of her best friends, Watcher father-figure, and even her own sister.  But as she believed in him, he believed in her.

“You’ll get through this,” he whispered, knowing it was the truth. “You’ll get through this.”
