Camille Bacon-Smith, Ph.D., is a folklorist, the author of Enterprising Women and Science Fiction Culture and editor of the highly respected online journal of folklore scholarship, New Directions in Folklore (http://www.temple.edu/isllc/newfolk). As a novelist and short story writer, she has published under her own name and a number of pseudonyms. An earlier version of her essay appeared in Fighting the Forces.
