Part 13
“It’s so quiet here at night,” Willow commented smiling at Remus.
They were walking down the mostly deserted Diagon Alley. The shops were all closed, just a few restaurants and pubs remained open and the street was absent of the children that had been running around on her last visit.
“Take advantage of the quiet now, when you get to Hogwarts you won’t get any more of it,” he pointed out, “Even at night.”
“Getting to attend a real magic school will be worth it. Although I’m going to miss seeing you.”
“I’ll visit as often as I can,” he wrapped his arm around her shoulder and pulled her closer to him as they walked. “Dumbledore says most of the professors are eager to work with you.”
“Most?”
“Well, Snape…”
“Hates me still?” Willow smiled.
“It’s not that he hates you,” Remus explained, “It’s just that he…”
“Hates everyone?”
“Well, yes he does, but he also feels that letting any of you come to Hogwarts is a mistake. We’re in the middle of a war Willow. Hogwarts is a prime target, because Voldemort’s goal is to get to Harry. Snape thinks that having two muggles and an untrained witch is just adding unnecessarily to the number of people to protect.”
“That’s silly,” Willow stopped walking and turned to face him, “I’ve been fighting scarier things that this Voldemort guy since I was sixteen, so has Xander. Dawn was kidnapped by Hell God! Not only did she survive it but we all fought Glory and won. I think we’ll be able to deal with one bigoted wizard with an over inflated ego.”
“Hey I didn’t say it,” Remus backed away and raised his arms in surrender, “I’m just explaining Severus’ viewpoint.”
“Sorry, but it’s, well, it’s a stupid view,” Willow apologized, “’Sides if Voldemort wants to play ‘see who can do more dark magic’ I can probably accommodate him.”
“Don’t do that to yourself Willow,” Remus said quietly, he had heard all the stories from Willow and in the Daily Prophet.
“I don’t plan to,” Willow admitted, “But I won’t back down either, if he attacks and that’s what it takes to stop him…”
“If it makes you feel any better, Dumbledore told Snape the same thing,” he said, “That you could handle yourselves in an attack anyway.”
“Good at least he believes in us.”
“Speaking of Dumbledore, he also wanted to know what you would like to do about placing Dawn at the school.”
“Placing how?” Willow asked confused, as they started their walk again.
“She can be placed in a room with you, or with Hermione or Ginny in Gryffindor, or he can have her sorted.”
“Ask Dawn what she prefers but I’d guess with the girls,” Willow said after a moment’s thought, “Not that I don’t want to share my room with her but I think she would enjoy herself more with girls her age. Also having her there could um, be a problem when I have visitors…”
“Visitors?” Remus asked leaning down to kiss her softly. “How many are you expecting?”
“Mmm,” Willow smiled against his cheek, “Only one that would be a problem if Dawnie was in my room.”
“Then we should do everything in our power to convince her to room with the Gryffindors,” Remus smiled and moved away to start walking again, “Although I would imagine if she were sorted she would be placed there anyway.”
“Why?” Willow asked, “I don’t fully understand the house thing, Harry and Ron explained but…”
“Gryffindors are recognized for their bravery,” Remus explained, “And as you said Dawn faced a hell god and survived.”
“Well that explains a lot about the kids, and confirms they need to learn some of the stuff Hermione’s learning.”
“Why?”
“Molly can stop them from patrolling with Hermione for now,” Willow explained, “In two weeks when they’re at school who’s going to stop them?”
“You and Xander will…”
“We used to sneak out and patrol with Buffy all the time when we were younger because we didn’t want her to have to go and do that alone,” Willow admitted, “Not that I would just allow them to go, but there are ways, lots of them, to get out without being caught. That’s without magic, imagine what they can do with it.”
“So what do you plan on teaching them?”
“For now, just basic self defense stuff, punching, kicking, blocking,” Willow said, “Once we’re at the school I would like to work with them all on some magic they can do without a wand. Having to use one won’t always be convenient in a fight with a vampire or demon. Although the wand could be a great asset if they don’t have stake, it is pointy and made of wood.”
“Good point,” he smiled, “If I can do anything to help out let me know. Are you ready to go back, you look cold?”
“It’s late we probably should.”
A few seconds later Willow found herself still standing next to Remus but now they were outside the Order Headquarters. Willow held her stomach for a minute, she really didn’t care for Apparating but it was less messy than floo and certainly quicker than walking or a car. They made their way quietly into the house and found it dark and quiet.
“Everyone must be in bed already,” Remus whispered.
They quietly went up the stairs careful to not make any sound that would wake anyone especially the portraits that still covered the walls. Willow once more silently promised to see what she could do about getting them down before she returned to Los Angeles.
“Remus there is something you can do to help,” Willow said facing him when they reached her room, “If you’re free tomorrow morning that is.”
“I’m free. What do you need?”
“I need danger,” Willow replied, “Not real danger, Hermione gets that in patrolling. I want to see how well she can sense a supernatural danger. It’s going to be harder for her to do in the wizarding world as it is. I want to see if she can pinpoint the location of a possible danger, and it seems safer to do it with you than with something that may really hurt her.”
“I’ll be there,” he agreed and kissed her goodnight before heading to his own room.
