The Finding
“Sometimes Buffy drives me completely crazy.” The redheaded witch said before flopping down on the bed next to her lover.
“What did she do this time?” Tara asked patiently. Buffy stories could quickly become long and complicated and always required babble mode. Then again, Buffy stories always had histories that made them complicated were her lover was concerned, the jealous witch thought.
“Buffy has been leaving this journal all around the room. First on my desk, next on the bed. Yesterday in the laundry basket. You would think if she wanted me to read it, she would just leave it on my desk with a yellow post it note saying, ‘Will could you take a look at this and tell me what you think.’ But no, first she spends two weeks leaving it all over the room so I keep stubbing my toe or I trip over it. We are all not slayers with superhero reaction time and mutant slayer healing powers.”
Tara seeing babble mode in full swing and not wanting to lose the point of the story decided she had better step in and ask questions.
“So what did she want you to look at?”
“A slayer’s journal.”
“Slayer’s journal as opposed to a watcher’s journals?” Tara asked now even more interested in the story.
“Yeah, I am surprised the counsel didn’t burn it. “ Both women had done enough research in their lives to know what organizations like the counsel thought of women. It was one of the main reasons why studying witchcraft was so difficult. Weather it be Sapho’s poems or midwife healing spells, women powered history didn’t made it onto the bookshelf that often.
“So what did Buffy want to know?” Tara asked with curiosity.
“That is just it, I don’t know. Sure she leaves it out for me to trip over but will she tell me why, No. Instead she just expects me to be Ms I can read your mind and……….”
Tara feeling a headache coming on, leaned over and gently prided the book from Willows hands as her reason for living continued on her rant. Turning the book around Tara was surprised to see it was the journal of Mira Harker.
“Reinfields” Tara said surprised she had not thought of it before.
“What?”
“Sorry Will, it’s just, t..th..that’ Tara paused to stop her stuttering from getting worse and to collect her thoughts. ‘How the hell do you explain Reinfield to someone that has never seen a Reinfield’, Tara wonder to herself.
“Reinfields, Mira Harker was the last Slayer the counsel let use a Reinfield. Then Mira was probably the last Slayer to reach thirty.” Tara said as way of expiation. She was still reeling form the thoughts. ‘The goddess may not like this turn of events,’ Tara thought.
“Ok, you are going to explain right.” Willow could tell from the look in her lover’s eye that this was something serious.
“I am not sure I can. Before the counsel, when the elders were responsible for slayers, well the girls weren’t really alone. They had all kinds of help: witches, seers, priest, and scholars. A whole group of people to assist them. They also had Reinfields. All these people had jobs to do to help the slayer. The Reinfields were like their personal body servants. Only they served the slayers bodies literally.”
“It’s like when we do spells together and then afterwards we...” Both Tara and Willow were now both as red as Willow’s hair.
“Do the wacky” Willow offered. She wanted Tara to finish the story.
“Well for slayers the whole magic thing is like magnified. Sex is like there total power base. And when they slay, all the magic gets storied up inside of them. The Reinfields help them to release the power safely. Filter it. They also take the edge off there anger. You know all the things you have told me about Faith and how evil slayer she was. Well instead of wanting to …., you know, .. with or too Buffy. Well she would do it to a Reinfield.”
“So a Reinfield is like a sex surrogate or something?” Willow asked still very confused.
“No Reinfields are Twilight demons. Not really evil but demons. It is so hard to explain this.” Tara said in total frustration.
“So you think Buffy wants to get Faith a Reinfield? I know Buffy is worried about Faith being in prison now but …” Willow couldn’t image her best friend needing such a creature.
“Maybe” Tara said out loud. ‘Or for herself’ she added in her head.
Then a freighting thought hit the blond witch. What if Buffy doesn’t want to get a Reinfield but already has one. I have to speak to the goddess the witch concluded.
