Part 3
Willow was trying to take notes from the large book on the blanket next to her, she should’ve gone with her first instinct, which was to go back to the library after dinner, but she had let Sirius talk her into coming out here to watch Quidditch practice instead. He had promised he would allow her to study, but that hadn’t happened yet. He had complained, whined, and even tried levitating her book away from her. Now he was pouting at her lack of attention. Sighing she dropped the quill onto the blanket and looked at him. This was why she had never liked studying with Xander, there was never any actual studying involved.
“You’re going to pout until I put the book away right?”
“I don’t pout,” he insisted leaning against a tree, arms crossed over his chest, staring at the Gryffindor team flying through the air several feet away.
“Right, then its okay for me to keep studying?” Willow asked trying to hide her smile.
Willow almost laughed out loud when he turned and glared at her. She closed her book and shoved it back in her bag with the parchment and quill. Turning her attention to the game on the field, she tried to recall what they had told her yesterday about Quidditch.
“Okay so James is supposed to catch the gold golf ball right?”
“It’s called a Snitch, and yeah, the game can’t end until someone catches it,” Sirius responded moving away from the tree to sit closer to her.
“Can’t end? What if no one catches it?”
“A game can last for days,” Sirius shrugged, “I don’t think it’s happened at Hogwarts. I guess, Dumbledore couldn’t very well allow classes to be canceled because no caught the snitch.”
“Whoever catches it wins then?” Willow asked.
“Not necessarily, it’s worth a hundred and fifty points but you can still lose if your teams far enough behind.”
Willow kept one eye on the game and tried to understand what Sirius was telling her, but she had never cared for sports and didn’t expect this one to be any different. What did fascinate her was the flying. Remus had told her only the younger students had flying classes, which had been kind of disappointing because she really wanted to learn to fly.
“Are you listening to anything I’m saying?” Sirius asked pulling her from her thoughts.
“Sorry, just thinking.”
“About what?” He was now lying on the blanket next to her.
“Flying,” Willow looked down at him, “I don’t know how.”
“Want to learn?”
“Really?” Willow grinned, “Remus said there aren’t any classes for older students.”
“There aren’t but I can teach you,” he rolled onto his side, facing her, head propped on his bent arm.
“What about transfiguration? You promised Professor Mcgonagall you would tutor me,” she reminded him.
She had caught on to the spell they were learning in class fairly quickly considering she had never done anything like it before but the professor had suggested a tutor to help her learn the things she had missed.
“We can do both,” he insisted.
“This isn’t going to be like the ‘I’ll let you study if you sit out here with me’ thing is it?”
“You’re too worried about that potions work,” he pulled her down next to him. “There are so many better things to be doing.”
“I’m worried about it because it’s a class assignment and I’m not the only one who’ll get a bad grade if I don’t do the work.”
“Severus won’t allow himself to get a bad grade.”
“So I should let him do all the work, on something that I could actually use when I get home, so that I can learn to fly and play a sport that will be of no use to me when I leave this school?”
“It’s just as important as potions,” Sirius insisted.
“How do you figure that?” Willow laughed, “Can’t really go flying around Sunnydale, and UC Sunnydale doesn’t have a Quidditch team.”
“It’s still important.”
“What’s important?” James asked as he and Lily sat on the blanket next to them.
“She thinks potions are more important than flying and Quidditch,” Sirius said turning his attention to his friend.
“That is completely beyond their comprehension, you know that right?” Lily asked, laughing at the shocked expressions on both James’ and Sirius’ faces.
“I see that,” Willow nodded, “Guys I hate to be a stick in the mud but I really do have to work on this Potions work so I’m heading back.”
The others decided to join her, Lily so that she could work on her homework, James and Sirius spent the walk back trying to convince Willow of the importance of flying and sports.
Willow was lying on the bed, reading and making notes for the Potions assignment while Lily was in the shower. The other seventh year girls were still down in the common room so Willow had decided to take advantage of the quiet and get some work done. She glanced up when she heard the door push open, at first she didn’t see anyone so she stood up and moved toward the door.
As soon as she was on her feet a giant black dog bounded into the room, jumping up on her, it knocked her back to the bed. It began barking and licking her face as she giggled and tried pushing it off. Finally it moved off of her, allowing her to sit, she rubbed its head.
“So you’re a friendly dog then?” Willow asked. The dog barked in response.
“No tag,” Willow frowned, “I don’t remember seeing you last night, are you a Gryffindor dog?”
She laughed when the dog barked again and jumped up on the bed next to her, its head in her lap. She was petting the dog when Lily walked in. She frowned at the dog, who just barked at her.
“What are you doing in here?”
The dog barked and put his head back in Willow’s lap.
“You know you can’t be up here,” Lily said hands on her hips, still frowning.
“Is someone allergic to dogs?” Willow asked, “But I didn’t know students could have dogs at school.”
“No one is allergic,” Lily answered, “And students can’t bring dogs.”
“Out Padfoot,” Lily pointed at the open door.
The dog growled softly and tried to move closer to Willow who laughed.
“I think he wants to stay here tonight.”
“I’m sure he does,” Lily responded glaring at the dog.
“Lily have you seen Padfoot?” James yelled from the bottom of the steps.
“Yes,” she answered walking to the door, “Get him out of here please.”
“How would you like me to do that?” James answered laughing, “I can’t come up there remember.”
“Remus, you’re a prefect can’t you do something about him?”
“I can’t get up there either,” he answered laughing, “Tell him we want to talk to him when he’s ready to leave though.”
“Thanks for nothing,” Lily walked back into the room and frowned at the dog again. “You going to leave on your own?”
The dog barked again, and moved further back on the bed.
“I get what you’re trying to do, but she’ll find out,” Lily told the dog, “If you don’t leave now, I’ll tell her myself.”
Willow watched, eyes widening, as the dog moved to the head of the bed and slowly turned into Sirius, lounging against her headboard.
“You are absolutely no fun,” he said scowling at her, “You know that right?”
“You snuck into the girl’s dorm,” Lily pointed out, “You can be expelled for that.”
“How did you get in here anyway?” Willow asked, the shock of the dog turning into a student wearing off. “I thought guys couldn’t get up here.”
“They can’t,” Sirius explained, “But the charm doesn’t recognize me as a dog.”
“So you do this often then?” Willow asked.
“First time,” he smiled, “Lighten up Lily, she’s not angry, and you wouldn’t be complaining if it was James.”
“James wouldn’t do that.”
“James can turn into a dog too?” Willow asked confused, “What about you?”
“James’ animagus form is a stag, and I’m not one,” Lily answered.
“Relax, I just came up here to talk to Willow about practicing her transfiguration.”
“Okay, even I don’t believe that,” Willow laughed as the other girl glared at him. “Tomorrow after classes?”
“That’ll work, we can study until dinner,” he suggested, “And Then do something fun later.”
“Study until dinner yes,” Willow agreed, “something fun depends on if I finish this potions stuff tonight.”
“Okay now out,” Lily told him, “Before the other girls find you up here.”
“Bye,” Sirius rose from the bed and left the room, waving as he pulled the door closed.
“So not everyone can turn into an animal then?” Willow asked Lily when Sirius was gone.
“No, well not and retain their magic anyway,” Lily explained, “I could transfigure myself into something but I’d be that thing completely. James, Sirius, and Peter retain their own thoughts and personality.”
“Why do they do it?” Willow asked, “I mean, how did they find out they could, it’s not taught here right?”
“For Remus,” Lily explained, “He won’t attack another animal in wolf form, this way he isn’t stuck at the shack alone, and it also means he can leave because they can keep him from hurting anyone.”
“Well, that’s better than sitting outside a cage all night, pretending like he knows you’re there,” Willow said lying back down and pulling the book to her again.
“How’s the research coming anyway?” Lily asked.
“I’ve made a lot of notes but there are a few ingredients I’m not sure I understand.”
Lily glanced over Willow’s shoulder at the items she was referring to.
“I’d help but I’m really not good at potions and those are rare.”
“I think I’ll see if I can find Severus tomorrow,” Willow frowned, “Ask him.”
“I’m going to turn in,” Lily said sitting on her own bed, “I’ll see you at breakfast.”
“’Night,” Willow said and turn her attention back to her book.
