Winifred 'Fred' Burkle/Illyria
Winfred Burkle was a budding scientist come librarian when she was sucked through a portal and into Pylea, a demon dimension where humans are forced to work as slaves.
With her huge brain and tiny hands, she soon managed to disable her slave collar and make good her escape.

She spent the next five years living in a cave trying to figure out how to get back home and, unbeknownst to her, opening portals left, right and centre in the process.

At last the Powers That Be come to the rescue and send Cordy a vision of Fred, leading Team Angel into Pylea and bringing Fred back with them.

Back in LA, she mainly eats Taco’s and casts longing looks in the direction of her new hero Angel.  While Angel only has eyes for Buffy (and occasionally Cordy) Wes and Gunn certainly have eyes for Fred.  She slowly comes out of herself and, with her big brain and tiny hands, finds herself to be a very useful member of the team.

She soon falls for Gunn’s charms, much to Wesley’s dismay, and the two are very happy for a short while.

When Angel’s son, Connor, sinks his father to the bottom of the ocean, and Cordelia ascends to a higher plane, Fred and Gunn are left to hold the fort.  By the time Angel gets back, Fred has become an accomplished demon hunter as well as a much more assertive person.  When she discovers that her old professor is responsible for sending her to Pylea she turns to Wesley for help killing him, it's Gunn, however, that murders the professor and their relationship breaks down.

When Angel Investigations take over Wolfram & Hart, Fred finds herself head of the science department with a giganamous lab at her disposal.

While at Wolfram & Hart, Fred wins the heart of her assistant Knox, but her heart lies with Wesley and after much hinting she finally takes matters into her own heart and makes Wesley the happiest man at Wolfram & Hart.  Their happiness is brief as Fred becomes infected by the ancient demon Illyria who finally takes over Fred's body.

Finding herself free from the Deeper Well, a graveyard for sleeping demons, Illyria plans to return the word, now overrun with filthy humans, to how it was when she reigned.  However, she finds her temple destroyed and her power too much for the feeble human body it now resides in.  The power in her nearly destroys her, and possibly the world, but Wesley manages to find a way to drain her power, leaving her less strong and no longer able to bend time to her will.

Illyria is intrigued to find herself having human emotions and becomes bothered that Wesley does not feel for her the way that he felt for Fred.  In the final battle she is ujnable to save Wesley's life but turns herself into Fred to soothe his dying moments.

Feeling grief at Wesley's passing, Illyria feels the need for more violence and joins the remainder of Angel's crew for the apocolypse...
