Synopsis

Bethany & Angel The Short: As Darla continues her secret visits to Angel's bed Cordelia gets a vision of a young woman in trouble. Angel runs to her rescue only to discover the men who attacked her in an alley crushed by a dumpster. He finds the girl but quickly learns she's terribly frightened and highly telekinetic! He gives her his card and tells her to contact him if she needs help. We learn the girl, Bethany, is staying with Lilah Morgan of Wolfram & Hart, who plan to use her as an assassin. After some bad dreams Bethany visits the Angel Investigations headquarters and Wesley is able to deduce she was abused by her father as a child. Angel, with the help of newly hired Charles Gunn, learn about Lilah's involvement and discovers that Lilah actually hired the men to attack Bethany to help bring out her powers. After Angel starts to reach Bethany Lilah pulls her trump card out and sends the girl's father to bring her to Wolfram & Hart. Bethany resists him and comes close to killing him, but doesn't. Angel helps Bethany move out of Lilah's apartment and sets her up outside Wolfram & Hart's reach.

The Long:: Unfinished.

Creature Feature

Bethany Bethany Chaulk is a human psychic with vast telekinetic powers. At first her powers seemed to work on an unconscious level when she was upset, lashing out at those who angered her, later she learned fine control and was able to move objects at will. Other characters who have displayed telekinetic powers include Katherine Madison in The Witch, Willow Rosenberg in Doppelgangland, Maude Pearson's ghost and Dennis Pearson's ghost in Rm w/a Vu and the Ethros demon in I've Got You Under My Skin.

In this episode we learn that some vampires bite each other during love making, although whether they gain sustenance from the vampire blood is unknown.

Cool Quotes

  1. Cordelia: ''I can't get this bandage to... Stop moving!''
    Angel: ''I'm not.''
    Cordelia: ''Well, then stop breathing.''
    Angel: ''I don't breathe.''
Cordelia: ''Then stop flexing your manly boob-muscles or whatever.''
Have I mentioned how much I love Cordelia lately?

  2. Angel: ''Cordelia?!?''
    Cordelia: ''Tan van, FETCH!''
So now they've gone from co-workers to friends to family to... owner and pet?

References

    Scrooge
  1. Cordelia: ''Ebenezer here doesn't want to share the wealth.''
Ebenezer Scrooge is a miserly character from Charles Dickens novel A Christmas Carol.

  2. Angel: ''Hey, you wanna get behind the tape? You wanna gawk, go home and watch a high speed chase on Fox.''
Fox is a television network, who also happened to be the distributer of the Buffy The Vampire Slayer videos. They have a web site at
    http://www.fox.com/.

    Cub Scout
  3. Angel: ''I'm out of vice three weeks, I've seen enough amateur night crap to fill a mini-series. You wanna pretend that's not a Cub Scouts uniform and tell me about dead people?''
In 1930, the Boy Scouts of America created the Cub Scout organization for boys younger than Boy Scout age. A year-round, home-centered program, Cub Scouting emphasizes involvement between boys and their parents, adult leaders, and friends. They have a web ring at http://www.cubscout.net/.

    Mr. Bill
  4. Officer: ''Nobody but our Mr. Bills. You know, 'Oh no, Mr. Bill!'''
Mr. Bill is a fictional clay figure which appeared on various television comedy series including Saturday Night Live and Night Flight. He would constantly be mangled and mushed in terrible accidents and would say ''OH NO!'' An interesting note is that a commercial for the Mr. Bill show appeared on the Buffy videos released by Fox. See him in action here.

  5. Lilah: ''Oh, I like folding. It's like a Zen exercise for me. It levels me out after work.''
Zen, from Sanskrit for meditation, is an important school of Buddhism in Japan that claims to transmit the spirit or essence of Buddhism, which consists in experiencing the enlightenment (bodhi) achieved by Gautama the Buddha. The school arose in the 6th century in China as Ch'an, a form of Mahayana Buddhism; though introduced centuries earlier, Zen did not fully develop in Japan until the 12th century. In its secondary developments of mental tranquillity, fearlessness, and spontaneity, all faculties of the enlightened mind, the school of Zen has had lasting influence on the cultural life of Japan.

    Hulk
  6. Angel: ''You wouldn't like me when I'm happy.''
This is a play on the famous line from the 1978 science fiction drama television series The Incredible Hulk, where David Banner says ''Mr. McGee, don't make me angry. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry.'' during the opening credits.

    Espresso
  7. Cordelia: ''It's the vanilla that makes the mocha less latte-y.''
A latte is an espresso coffee topped with steamed frothed milk. Espresso is a brewing process by which the classic, dark-roasted cup of black coffee, full-bodied but aromatic, is made, and it is possibly the most difficult and potentially the most expensive way to make coffee. The word ''espresso'' derives from the Italian verb meaning ''to put under pressure,'' and that is exactly how the coffee is made. Boiling water and steam are forced through very finely ground coffee, preferably one without too much acidity, to produce a unique style of coffee with bite and great persistence on the palate. Also referenced by Rupert in Wild At Heart and Cordelia in Eternity.

  2. Angel: ''Do you know how hard it is to think straight with a rebar through your torso?''
Cordelia: ''Actually I do, benefits of a Sunnydale education.''
Lover's Walk - Cordelia was impaled with one when a stairway collapsed in an abandoned factory.

  3. Gunn: ''Fair Cordelia, you still saving my life?''
First Impression - Cordelia vowed to keep Gunn alive despite his self-destructive life-style.

Goofs

  1. As Angel crosses the police line to investigate the crime scene, he passes a police car where you can see his reflection in the paint, but being a vampire he shouldn't have a reflection.

  2. When Bethany is taken into the van she appears to be at the Burbank Pramanade by the Burbank Mall, but the car chase appears to happen in downtown Los Angeles. (Thanks to Marsia from the Watcher's Diary for spotting this.)

    Windows Windows
  3. When Bethany first sees her father she blows out the windows for several floors around them, but when her father is thrown out the window most of the formerly broken windows are now perfectly intact.

  4. Cordelia is hit by a nail in the upper part of her arm, but when she gets up from the ground she is holding her arm in a much lower spot.

Trivia

Bar Preview
  • One thing that struck me as odd was how a couple of scenes used in the previews were obviously flipped over from how they were shown in the episode. To the right you see the scene as it appeared in the preview, and to the far right is how it appeared in the episode. The one from the episode is consistent with later scenes in where he was struck with the bar, so I'd guess the preview was flipped over for some reason.

  • Lilah's apartment is #102.

    Daisy

    Points Of View

    Mathew:

They are definitely leading to something with this episode. The tension between the crew is growing, and even Wesley is noticing Angel's odd sleeping habits. The young confused telekinetic girl trick is old but trusted material, although I was shocked by the lack of any reference to Carrie. I think right now Cordelia pretty much runs Angel Investigations, let's all admit that one. What's interesting is all the super-powered women Angel has in the wings now. Super-strong Faith, pyrokinetic Jheira, telekinetic Bethany and of course the trusty precog Cordelia! They could start their own superhero team!

    Ness:

This was the first episode of Mere Smith's I saw where I didn't read any spoilers and I have to say it's pretty good. She has a great sense of humour and the "manly boob" quote had me rolling on the floor. The story also had its serious side but I kinda expected for Bethany's father to show up at the end. It was cool how the windows blew out though. It was kind of Cordelia to worry about Angel. It shows that she does care about people other then herself.
