Who Are You? Episode Guide

Story Line

The episode picks up probably about five minutes after TYG left off. The ambulance guys are taking Buffy away and a detective tells us that Faith is 'one dangerous girl'. Something Faith counters "She's not a girl." Later, in the trashed living room, Joyce tells us that she thinks Faith is "horribly unhappy." Naturally, Faith doesn't agree with Joyce's observations. She doesn't even care that much because in her mind, 'Faith' will be gone, and she can live her life out as Buffy. What Faith doesn't realize at this point is...things won't be that simple.

Starting as Joyce hugs her, she's not used to affection and shrugs lose...pleading to Joyce that she's sore from the fight. She assures Joyce she'll spend time with her. She just wants to take a bath first. Faith really checks out her 'new' features. Especially her face. She turns her head to the side, then wrinkles her nose to look at it. She pulls her eyebrows back to look at her eyes. She sticks out her tongue to look at it. She pulls her upper lip back to look at her teeth. Faith then starts on how she sees Buffy, imitating her and trying to be her: "Why, yes, I would be Buffy. May I help you?" She sticks out her tongue again. She adjusts her hair.

She shakes her finger. "You can't do that. it's wrong." She shakes her head slightly. " You can't do that because it's naughty." Again, slightly louder: "Because it's wrong." Then again, softly: "Because it's wrong." She points very aggressively. "You can't do that. It's wrong. I'll kick your ass. I'm gonna kill you."

Buffy is struggling in a hospital bed. There are three other hospital personnel, a uniformed officer and a plainclothes officer holding her down. The doctor orders for a sedative while he and a police officer hold her down. Buffy screams: "I have to go home! She's with my mother." A doctor puts needle to Buffy's arm. Buffy tries to fight, but the sedative kicks in. "You don't understand. She's taken my...my body." She loses consciousness.

When next we see Faith she's in Joyce's bedroom. She finds Joyce's wallet and takes out her credit card, booking herself the earliest flight out. Joyce enters and asks what she's doing, thinking fast, she grabs mail and tells Joyce that she was: "Just getting my mail." Joyce buys it and continues to tell her that Giles was on the other line and that he had news. Smiling, Faith says she has time to kill and goes.

Cut to Buffy in the back of a police car with a uniformed officer driving and a plainclothes officer riding shotgun. Buffy moans and the policeman notes she's coming to. He envies her constitution. Just at that moment, a red armored car/truck cuts off the police car which crashes into it. Two men in black clothing jump out of the back. One uses a gun to cover the two police officers, who seem to be stunned. Another uses an ax to smash the back window. The one with the gun breaks remnants on the sides with the gun. The guy with the axe drags Buffy out the window. "By order of the Watcher's Council, you are being taken into custody until such time--" Before he can finish, another member tells him to skip the speech. They both drag Buffy to the back of the armored truck, close the doors and head off into the night.

Faith casually enters Giles place. He's pleased to see her. She notes that the 'Scooby gang's all here'. She's slightly thrown by Anya, as she's never seen her before. Moving on, she asks Giles what's up. He tells her it's about Faith. Faith smiles and tells them "Didn't Joyce tell you? I already kicked that ass.". Xander is happy, but Giles is not so happy. He tells them that unless "I'm mistaken, Faith is no longer in police custody." Faith is curious and asks what he means. Giles goes on to tell everyone that the CoW has sent a 'wetworks'(assassins) team to capture Faith. Faith begins to laugh, perhaps not understanding the severity of the situation--although Giles does tell them that she's to be taken back to England. Her laughing earns her long looks from the gang. She apologizes and tells them that's she just happy about it because "...Faith is evil."

Willow tells Faith that she hopes 'they throw the book at her'. In a nice pick-up scene for all who have forgotten, Faith, never really interested in Willow, but certainly jealous of her friendship with Buffy, says: "I forgot how much you don't like Faith." Willow goes on to explain that it's because of all she's done to 'you' (Buffy) She goes on to wish that she had an hour alone with Faith...but concedes that she'd have to be "...larger and have grenades." Faith says: "I bet I know what Faith would say to that." She then has a flash of knifing Willow in the stomach (the same place Buffy stabbed her) and then repeats the process. Faith then comes out of her 'flash' and tells Willow that "I'd never let her hurt you." Willow smiles at 'Buffy' and says: "I know."

In the interim, Anya sums up that everything is fine and is a little miffed that Giles just didn't phone them all because she and Xander had a romantic night planned. Giles counters that he thought it was best to 'convene'. He goes on to say that they still have Adam to take care of. Obviously out of the loop, Faith asks: "Yeah. Adam. [pause] What's up with him?" Giles offhandedly says he wishes he knew. Faith smiles and tells them all not to worry, she'll patrol and they should go have their fun.

Faith has no intention of patrolling, as when we next see her, she's having a blast at the Bronze. Enter Spike. Sighing, he asks Faith if she's keeping tabs on him and just giving him a hard time. Faith, again not knowing the deal, asks (cleverly) if she 'usually' gives him a hard time. Spike counters with "Very funny." He then tells her she doesn't have to worry about him 'drinking' unless she's there to protect innocent beers. Faith finally catches on. A wonderfully played scene comes next as Faith states "You're a vampire." Spike counters with: "Was. And as soon as I get this chip out of my head, I'll be a vampire again. But until then, I'm just as helpless as a kitten up a tree. So why don't you sod off?" Faith says: "Okay." Angry at being dismissed, Spike yells: " Oh, fine! Throw it in my face! Spike's not a threat anymore. I'll turn my back. He can't hurt me."

It finally dawns on Faith who he is. She turns, smiling. " Spike? Spike. William the Bloody with a chip in his head. I kind of love this town."
Spike: " You know why I really hate you, Summers?" Faith, obviously knows. Rather gleefully she replies: "'Cause I'm a stuck-up tight-ass with no sense of fun?" Spike, kinda confused, replies: "Well, yeah, that covers a lot of it." Faith continues: "' Cause I could do anything I want, and instead, I choose to pout and whine and feel the burden of slayerness? I mean, I could be rich, I could be famous, I could have anything. Anyone." She moves closer and puts her hands on Spike's chest. "Even you, Spike. I could ride you at a gallop until your legs buckled and your eyes rolled up. I've got muscles you've never even dreamed of. I could squeeze you until you popped like warm champagne, and you'd beg me to hurt you just a little bit more. And you know why I don't? " She moves closer and looks up at him pursing her lips. "Because it's wrong." She then moves off. Spike, clearly all but panting shouts after her. "I get this chip out, you and me are gonna have a confrontation!" Faith merely calls back "Count on it."

In the meantime, Adam has convinced some vampires that they have nothing to be afraid off. That he'll 'show' them 'the way'.

Meanwhile, Buffy wakes up, chained, in the back of the armored van. She sees Weatherby. He says: "Well, it's awake." Buffy asks: "Who are you?" He replies: "Council. We're taking you back to the mother country. Seems you've been a naughty girl." Buffy counters, urging. "Listen to me. Y-You've made a mistake. I am not Faith. I'm Buffy Summers. Faith performed some kind of spell, she switched our bodies." Collins, who's standing outside the truck says: "Congratulations. No one's ever actually tried that one on me before." Buffy is desperate. She tells them: "You have to find Faith. C-call Giles. J-just get him here." Cold hearted, Collins merely tells her that Giles no longer works for the CoW. And, for that matter, neither does 'Buffy Summers'! He goes on to say that: "What you are, miss, is a package. I deliver the package. I don't much care what's inside." He moves away, telling Weatherby to do the same. Weatherby, for his part, does care. "He may not care, but I do. The Watcher's Council used to mean something. You perverted it, you trash. We should have killed you while you were asleep. " He spits in Buffy's face then gets out, leaving Buffy more than worried.

Meanwhile, Willow and Tara arrive at the Bronze. Tara has been concerned that perhaps Willow doesn't want to introduce her to her friends. Willow counters that it's not that at all. It's just that she is special to her, and at this point, although it may sound odd, she doesn't want to 'share' her. Tara says she understands. Wanting to include Tara a bit more in her SG life, Willow decides (thinking no SG will be there) to take Tara to the Bronze. To her amazement, they run into 'Buffy'. She grabs Tara and pulls her over to 'Buffy' who is urging a guy (along with several others) to 'chug a lug'. Willow intros the girls. Faith is a little thrown, as she clearly doesn't know about Tara either. She's relieved to know that 'Buffy' has never met Tara. Completely uninterested by the fact that Tara is in Willow's wicca group, Faith moves off to a couch. Willow and Tara follow. Faith sighs as she sits, legs on the table. Willow asks her if the patrol was a 'no go'. Faith replies that she was tired, citing the ordeal with 'Faith' as the reason. Willow is happy that 'Buffy' is taking time to chill. She then asks if anyone wants a soda. Faith shakes her head, but Tara says she wouldn't mind some water. Willow goes to get her some. Faith looks at a very nervous Tara, who is looking at Willow walking off. She's senses that Willow and Tara are more than friends. She sits up and leans forward. "So you guys been hanging out a lot lately, huh?"

Tara:"Yeah. she's, um, she's really cool." Faith smiles: "So Willow's not driving stick anymore. Who would have thought? I guess you never really know someone until you've been inside their skin. And Oz is out of the picture? Oh! Never seen two people so much in love. She just couldn't get enough of old Oz" Still nervous, now even more so, Tara stammers: "She, um, said he, uh, uh, w-w-w-w-w-went"
[NB: Faith was and is many things. But she was never a low-blow hitter. What JW has written here doesn't ring true as something she'd do]

Faith being Faith, picks up on Tara's nerves and makes her stutter obvious. "He w-w-w-w-what? You gonna get that sentence out sometime tonight?" Tara lowers her head. By this time, Willow has returned, drinks in hand. She points out to 'Buffy' that there's a guy in the corner. Faith, forgetting she's a slayer for a moment, tells Willow that it's a "Good call." She sees him leading a girl outside. Tara's a little confused and asks Willow "What?" Willow replies: "Vampire." Faith leans back saying that it's "...wicked obvious." She then realizes that Willow is waiting for her to move a la Buffy. "So...I should slay him." She gets up. Willow asks if she wants help. Faith replies: "Nah, I got it."

She picks up a pool cue as she proceeds out the back area where the vampire has begun feeding on the girl. Faith breaks the cue in two and drops one end. The girls arms flail. Faith hits the vampire in the back using the stake as a club to get his attention. The vampire lets the girl fall and turns. Faith blocks a right and a left. She kicks the vamp in the leg and spins 'him' around and holds it. She then stakes it and throws it to the side just before it dusts. Faith exhales and looks down at the girl. She is squatting and she looks up at Faith.
Faith: "You'll live."

Girl:"Uh he was so strong, uh..."
Faith: " Yeah, well, he's gone now." Faith turns to leave but the girl grabs her hand.
Girl: "Thank you. Thank you." Expressions of confusion flash across Faith's face. Obviously, it has been nearly two years since anyone thanked Faith. She's forgotten what it's like. Faith: "Yeah. It's cool." Faith walks off and drops the stake.

Willow, pleading that Tara isn't feeling well, tells Faith that she's going home. She asks innocently if she's going to see Riley. Faith smiles.

Cut to an abandoned barn. Buffy is banging desperately (unseen) at the door of the van. Smith walks over with a syringe (where did these guys train again?) He opens the back and Buffy grabs him in a choke hold with the chains that bind her. She tells Smith that he can scream. She tells the others to unchain her, or she kills Smith. Cold-hearted, Collins tells her that whenever they go on 'a job' they always put their affairs in order. Knowing what he means. Buffy lets Smith go. She's down. But not out.

Meanwhile, at Riley's, Faith has indeed decided to pay him a visit. She stands in the doorway and smiles: "Hi, baby."

In Tara's room, Willow tells Tara that she's sorry she's not feeling well. Tara tells Willow outright, that she doesn't believe Buffy was Buffy. Intrigued, Willow asks Tara to explain. Tara does. She tells Willow that every person has a specific 'energy flow' and that Buffy's was fragmented. Willow thinks Tara means that Buffy is 'possessed'. Tara's not so sure. She asks Will if she has anything belonging to Buffy. Willow naturally does, a ring. Tara tells Willow that if she can find Buffy on the 'nether realm' she should be able to see her. Tara tells her that's it's risky and that she'd have to be Willow's 'anchor' to keep her on 'this' plane. Willow simply smiles and says that she trusts her.

Meanwhile, back at Riley's, Faith tells him he no longer needs to worry about Faith. He admits he was curious about meeting her. Faith sits on Riley's lap, straddling him. She tells him he wouldn't have liked Faith. That she wasn't 'proper' and tended to give into her animal instincts. She kisses him and nips at his lips. Riley is worried about the door being open. Faith merely smiles and says that perhaps his fellow marines could learn something. Not satisfied at all, Riley gets up, holds onto his skewered side, and shuts the door. Faith notices and asks if he's hurt. He says he's not 'that bad' citing the drugs that the Dr. gave him. Faith smiles and says that perhaps she should take him for "a test drive." Riley says he wouldn't say no.
Faith crawls onto the bed, asking Riley how he 'wants her'. This is crucial, as it speaks to how Faith is used to being treated by men. Thrown, Riley asks: "How do I?" Faith, obviously not used to a 'normal' relationship, merely says: "Yeah. What do you want to do with this body? What nasty little desire have you been itching to try out? Am I a bad girl? Do you wanna hurt me?" Riley, suitably thrown, asks what game they're meant to be playing. Confused at Riley's behavior, Faith simply says: "I'm Buffy." Riley replies with : "Okay. I'll be Riley." Unsure of what to do, Faith counters with : "Well, if you don't wanna play..." and starts to leave the bed. Riley grabs her and says sincerely: "You're right. I don't wanna 'play'." He kisses her gently. She responds.

Back at Tara's room, both Willow and Tara begin the 'search' for Buffy.

Back with Riley, Riley is on top of Faith. He tells her that he loves her. Again, not used to affection, Faith is clearly confused. She pushes him away, stumbling verbally, she tells him to get off her. She gets out of the bed, gasping. Riley, clearly concerned, asks her what's wrong. Thrown, Faith says: "Who are you? What do you want from m-her?" Riley, thinking he's said the wrong thing, says: "Should I not have...?" But Faith cuts him off. Trying to convince herself more than anyone...she mutters "This is meaningless." Riley notes that she's shaking and puts a sheet around her. He asks what's wrong. Faith simply replies: "Nothing. Nothing." She then puts her head against Riley's chest.

In the interim, Adam has been busy brainwashing vampires. He asks them what they fear most.

It's morning. 8:25am to be precise. Faith has donned one of Riley's shirts. She fixes her hair, looks to the clock, then Riley. She then leaves. Upon leaving, she runs into Forrest. He's clearly not happy that 'Buffy' has been with Riley. He states that he hopes she left him alive. Faith stops and asks: "What?" Forrest moans that Riley is 'meant to be on the mend' and he doesn't see 'her' giving him much time to rest. Faith retorts with: "I think maybe you should stay out of other people's lives." Forrest counters that they're 'on a mission'. Faith replies that she's 'been fighting demons since before he could shave.' Forrest comes back with a curt: "Yeah. You're a real killer." Clearly, Faith is angered by that particular phrase. She corrects him, saying: "I am not a killer!!! I am the slayer! And you don't know the first thing about me." Forrest isn't bothered. He merely replies: "You really care what I think?" Faith, after a small pause, says she actually doesn't care what he thinks. She leaves.

Back at the barn, Collins informs Weatherby and Smith that the CoW can't get passage and have 'ordered the kill'. He puts a silencer onto his pistol. Smith states that Faith could've killed him, but she didn't. Collins merely replies with "Lucky you." He sticks the gun between the bars. But Buffy's been waiting. She grabs his hands (complete with gun) by her feet and pulls him into the truck, stunning him. She pulls the gun to her hands and shoots the lock of the chains that bind her. Smith, running, calls for Weatherby. But while Smith is running for Weatherby, Buffy has run to the front of the van. She finds the keys and starts the van. Weatherby runs for the door to the van, but Buffy merely opens it, and he runs into it, practically knocking himself out. Buffy reassures herself that she's good at driving. She shifts gears and breaks through the doors, leaving Smith to fire at the armored van alone, but to no avail.

At the airport, Faith collects her plane ticket.

At Giles' place, he comes down the stairs in a rather good mood, holding a plate and some cups. Buffy bursts through the door. Giles is horrified...as obviously, he sees Faith. [Author's note...I LOVE this scene, wonderfully played by Eliza and ASH] Giles is frozen in one place. Buffy says: "Giles!"

Giles, alarmed says: "God!" Buffy realizes Giles might jump to the wrong conclusion. She says: "Don't move. Ok, Giles, you have to listen to me very carefully. I'm not Faith."
"Really?", he asks, not believing her. "Really." Buffy states simply. Giles continues "'Cause the resemblance is striking." Buffy notes that Giles is moving ever so slowly. "I know. Giles, you just have to... Stop inching. you were inching." Giles, attempting to pre-empt anything Faith may say, says: "Look, I-I know what you're going to say, and-and uh..."
Buffy cuts him off. "...I'm Buffy."

Giles, taken aback announces: "All right, I didn't know what you were going to say, but that doesn't make you any less crazy." Buffy's slightly annoyed. She explains: "Faith switched. I mean, she had some device. She switched our bodies." She moves a strand of hair. "Giles, I swear - it's me." Somewhat calmer, Giles sets the plate and cups down. " U-um, if-if you are Buffy, then, uh, then you'll let me tie you up w-without killing me -until we find out whether you're telling the truth."

Slightly more annoyed, Buffy states: "Giles, Faith has taken my body, and for all I know, she's taken it to Mexico by now. I don't have time for bondage fun! Ask me a question. Ask me anything."
Giles comes up with a rather lame: "Who's president?" She retorts that: "We're checking for Buffy, not a concussion." Giles agrees: " Oh, yes, Alright. um..." Buffy is impatient and frustrated now: " Giles! You turned into a demon, and I knew it was you! I mean can't you just look in my eyes and be all... intuitive?" Sensing (finally) that it may, indeed, be Buffy standing before him, he asks: "How did I turn into a demon?" Buffy's excited because she knows this and a few other intimate details: "Oh, cause, uh, Ethan Rayne. And-and you have a girlfriend named Olivia, and you haven't had a job since we blew up the school...which is valid!... lifestyle wise. I mean, it's not like you're a slacker type, but...Oh, oh! when I had psychic power, I heard my mom think that you were like a stevedore during sex. Do you want me to continue?"

Embarrassed, Giles says: "Actually, I beg you to stop." Buffy asks genuinely: "What's a stevedore?" Naturally, he dodges the question. "Alright, let's-- um, I need you to explain everything." Buffy replies: "And I will, after we get Faith."

At that moment, Willow and Tara enter. Not at all fazed by 'Faith' as they know it's Buffy. Willow re-introduces Buffy to Tara. Willow goes on to explain that Faith switched bodies probably using a 'Draconian Katra spell'. The up side is, that once both Will and Tara figured what happened, they conjured another Katra (home conjured version of course). Willow tells Buffy that if she can get hold of Faith, it should switch them back. Buffy's more than relieved. At that moment, the phone rings. It's Xander. He tells Giles to turn on his TV. He does so. A news announcer tells anyone who's watching that 'disfigured' men have barricaded themselves into a church with at least 20 parishioners held hostage. Faith sees the same report at the airport. She looks down at her bag, then back to the screen.

The 'head' vampire drones on that he can't believe he was avoiding the place. He demands that 'the Lord' show up...or he'll kill off His people. Outside, Riley asks a put-out police officer what his superior said. He replies that he has to defer command to Riley. Riley tells him to hold his men in position. This is a military situation. Riley moves to the back where he encounters Faith. She asks how many are inside. He replies that there's 3. Faith says she can handle 3. Riley protests she can't do it alone and tells her to 'wait for the troops'. Faith asks how he arrived so fast. He says he didn't...he was late for church. Faith tells him he can send the troops in once they arrive...but she's going in. Riley says he'll go to. Faith remembers that he's hurt and pokes his side to remind him. She tells him that if anyone comes out, get them to safety 'unless they've got fangs'. She enters the church.

The head vamp is so not pleased. He says that he told the cops that if they sent anyone in, he'd start the 'whole massacre thing'. Faith replies she's 'not the cops' and that she's just come to pray. She informs the head vamp that he's not gonna hurt the people. He replies "Why not?" Faith replies: "Because it's wrong." At that moment, a vampire attacks her. She throws him into a column. The head vamp sighs. "You're the Slayer." Faith replies: "The one and only"

Outside, Giles has pulled up in the armored van. He stops and Willow, Tara and Buffy all jump out the back. Giles knows she needs a diversion. He creates one for the policeman who has told them to 'get out of here' by waving his arms about and saying that their families are inside. Buffy sneaks away.

Back inside, the head vamp says he's not afraid of the Slayer. Indeed, he's not afraid of anything anymore. Faith replies that he should let the people go. That all 3 of them can try to take her on. He says he has a better idea. He swings at Faith but she dodges with ease and hits him in the stomach, backhands his face and kicks him. He goes down. She takes on another vampire, kicking him in the stomach too...which knocks him back. Then she kicks the vampire who hit the pillar and sends him flying. She drives the second vampire back with a series of punches as people flee. She breaks off some wood from the back of a pew and stakes the second vampire. She tosses him aside and he spins as he turns to dust. The vampire who hit the pillar flees and grabs a robe. He runs outside and into Riley. They both fall and roll. Upon getting up, Riley spins him and throws him down and holds onto the robe. The sunlight dusts him.

Buffy runs up to him and hugs him. Obviously, not knowing it's Buffy, he mistakes her for a frightened girl. But Buffy has no time to explain things. She asks how many are inside. Riley merely asks who she is.

Inside the last vampire breaks the stake lose from Faith's grip and throws her back against a pew. He says: "I have strength you couldn't dream of." and punches Faith in the face. He goes on to say: "Adam has shown me the way, and there is (punches Faith again) nothing..." Faith sees her 'old self' come into view as the vamp is dusted by Buffy. Horrified by her own image, Faith attacks Buffy with fury. She knocks Buffy down but Buffy comes back with an uppercut and knocks her back. For Faith fans...this scene is heartbreaking.

Buffy: " You can't win this." Faith: "Shut up! Do you think I'm afraid of you?" Faith grabs Buffy and throws her down, then sits on top of her and starts punching her. "You're nothing!" She continues to punch her own image that 'is' Buffy. "Disgusting!" Faith grabs Buffy's hair with both hands and bangs her head against the ground. "Murderous bitch! You're nothing!" She switches back to punches and begins to cry. "You're disgusting." Buffy grabs Faith's hand. Both their hands begin to glow. Suddenly, both girls are back in their original bodies. Buffy falls back as their hands separate. Faith is disoriented for a second, but jumps up and runs away. Shocked, Buffy watches her leave.

Back in Riley's room, Riley is sitting in his chair. Buffy hangs up his phone. "She's gone. Not a trace. Giles said the council guys have cleared out, too." Riley says he doesn't understand how what she did was possible. Buffy simply says "Magic." Riley berates himself for not picking up that she wasn't herself. He can't look at Buffy and Buffy realizes. "You slept with her." Riley looks at his feet. "I slept with you." He pauses. "Man, would I like to get my hands on her." He quickly clarifies what he means. "Not in a sex way!" Buffy tells him she doesn't think she'll be coming back. Riley responds with: "Guess she's had her fun." Buffy says, almost sadly: "Yeah. Fun."

Briefly Buffy's face and Faith's face are superimposed together on the screen as Buffy fades out and Faith fades in. She's riding in a rail car with wooden sides she looks empty, sad and very much alone.
