Sarah McLachlan - All human
On being a kid
I was a hurtin' teenager. I was desperate to fit in. I never really did anywhere until late in high school when I met the artsy crowd that was into music. They were the first people who accepted me. I went to a very upper-middle-class preppy school. They all wore Izods, five or six on top of each other. It didn't matter what I did to fit in. I begged and begged my mother to get me this pair of cowboy boots, but I got 'em at the wrong store. They had a pair at Zeller's and they had a pair at the nice store. My mom got them at Zeller's. But you know what? It wouldn't have mattered. I'm afraid to have children for that very reason. Kids are so mean.
On being accused of being gay
People come up to Ash [her husband] and say 'I know you got married as a farce. I know she's gay.' I don't care. Most of the people who think I'm gay are gay. It's always from lesbians. What can I do? I mean, I didn't help it or hurt it. My music is pretty ambiguous. I don't tend to talk in he's or she's. I've never had sex with a woman. I've kissed a woman before but it was that kind of innocent thing. I can't go any further. My mother will die. I was more candid in Details because I knew she'd never read it. This one she'll read.

Interpretations and meanings of her songs as explained by her on the program VHI storytellers
Building a Mystery
This song is about how "we all put on masks to hide who we really are."
Sweet Surrender
This one is about "having people accept you for everything that you are, including all of the ugliness inside of you...two people accepting each other, totally."
Hold On
This song is about a woman on a documentary that Sarah watched whose husband was dying of Aids. Sarah said that the woman spoke with such "pure emotion, such clarity and honesty. Something came out of me through the woman." Sarah wanted to depict that truth and emotion in this song.
Elsewhere
This is about the "trappings of youth and adolescence... struggling to find out who you are, through your parents and through society."
Possession
Possession is about "dealing with fame. A small percentage of my fans crossed the line, that boundary of being sane." Sarah explained how hard it is dealing with the fact that she is an ordinary person with an extraordinary job..."It has to do with the way people perceive me. I am still the same person that I was before. I wrote this song to try to get into the shoes of the obsessed fan so that I can try to find a way to deal with it."
Adia
This song is about "my problems in dealing with feeling responsible for everyone else."
