Band Check

You love the theme song of Buffy ? Then it's time for today's Band Check to introduce you to the band behind that tune.
The "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" theme tune was written and performed by the band Nerf Herder. Joss Whedon said in his DVD commentary for "Welcome to the Hellmouth" that Alyson Hannigan brought the band to his attention by constantly playing their self-titled first album. Joss contacted them to compose Buffy’s title music.

Nerf Herder's current lineup

Dave Ehrlich - guitar
Parry Gripp - singer and guitar
Steve Sherlock - drums
Ben Pringle – bass

Where does the name Nerf Herder come from?
Most people that are long time fans of Nerf Herder know that their name comes from Star Wars. Nerf Herder is mentioned in the second released Star Wars movie, Episode V, The Empire Strikes Back.
While on the ice planet Hoth, when Han and Leia are talking to Luke in the medical lab (after his recovery of being attacked by a Wampa Ice Creature), Leia says to Han "Why you stuck up, half witted, scruffy looking nerf herder!"

What exactly is a nerf and nerf herder anyways? (in terms of the Star Wars Universe)
The definition of a Nerf is as follows:
A pack animal, the nerf was also raised as a source of meat. Originally native to the planet Alderaan, these rangy creatures have curved horns and long fur. Their muscular bodies are lean and supple, and they have a nasty temper. Their long fur mats tangle easily, creating a mass of hair that collects everything it touches. Thus, the nerf carries a strong odor around with it. The shepherds that raise nerfs - referred to simply as nerf herders - are looked upon as lesser members of society, but when they bring their meat to market, they live like kings. The fur of the nerf is often carded into wool, for use in making warm jackets and leggings. Nerfs are also hardy creatures which could adapt to a variety of climates. This made raising them on other planets quite easy, ensuring that the species survived the destruction of their homeworld.

Nerf Herder & Buffy

Nerf Herder’s song Vivian (from How to Meet Girls, 2000) played during the episode "Who Are You?" when Faith (in Buffy’s body) danced at the Bronze.
The band appeared onstage in "Empty Places" when Faith, the Potentials and Dawn went dancing there. Kennedy said in that episode, “What kind of band plays during an apocalypse?” to which Dawn replied, “I think this band might actually be one of the signs".
The non-U.S. credits of the episode "The Witch" named Nerf Herder as Nerfherder. We see in "Nightmares" that Willow has a Nerf Herder bumper sticker on her locker door.
