The Fandom Project - Pets and Plots!

This project explores the fans of "Buffy" and "Angel". How old are they? What is their occupation? Which characters do they like?
The Fandom Project - Pets and Plots: Overview
Last summer, The Fandom Project was in full swing and participants were invited to complete the second survey, "Pets and Plots". That survey focused on Internet fans' favorite characters and least favorite plot devices. I had expected that coding would be completed by the end of November, but Real Life and Health Issues (and surgery) intervened in its more timely completion.

That said, I'm beginning the overview of the survey's overall results. This posting will include general demographic stats and favorite characters. The next posting will focus on least favored plot arcs. Future postings throughout February will focus on demographics and other stats associated with each Pet. For research purposes, I'm using Pet as a synonym for favorite character. Also, I will not be commenting on any of the stats; I'm curious to read YOUR comments.

Caveats:

(1) One hundred eighteen participants completed Pets and Plots surveys. Unfortunately, not all participants completed all the questions, so some of our totals will equal less than 118. Percentages are rounded out to the nearest unit.

(2) When quoting any/all of the stats provided, don't forget to provide credit: The Fandom Project, Prof. Mary Kirby Diaz, Farmingdale State University, or, if you're online: makd. [done]

N=118

Gender. N=115 - Not all participants gave their gender. Females = 95/115= 83% Males = 20/115= 17%

Age. N=116 - Not all participants gave their age. Average age = 35
15-19 = 5 (4%)
20-24 = 20(17%)
25-29 = 18(16%)
30-34 = 23(20%)
35-39 = 15(13%)
40-44 = 12(10%)
45-49 = 11(9%)
50-54 = 9(8%)
55-59 = 3(3%)

by decade range:
15-19 = 5 (4%)
20-29 =38(33%)
30-39 =38(33%)
40-49 =23(20%)
50-59 =12(10%)
Note: 20-39 = 66% (2/3 of participants)
20-49 = 85% (the majority of participants ~4/5)
30-49 = 53% (slightly over 1/2 of participants)

Marital Status. N=112 - Not all participants indicated marital status.
Married = 44/112 = 39% Single = 50/112 = 45%
Divorced = 7/112 = 6% Cohabiting = 11/112 = 10%

Education Completed: N=105 - Not all participants indicated level of education completed.
High School = 22/105 = 21%
College = 50/105 = 48%
Grad School = 33/105 = 31%

Parents: N=118
38/118 (32%) of participants are parents; those 38 participants have a total of 57 children. Their ages? from 1-1/2 years through 32 years. The average age? 15
The ranges: 1 year-4 years = 12 children (21% of the children are 1-4)
5 years - 10 years = 16 children (28% of the children are 5-10)
11 years-15 years = 6 children (11% of the children are 11-15)
16 years - 19 years = 12 children (21% of the children are 16-19)
20 years - 32 years = 18 children (32% of the children are 20-32)
[These numbers don't fit to the total of 57 children. I count 64 children. The percentages are wrong.]
Also: 49% of the children are 10/under ten years old.
32% of the children are 11-19 years old.
60% of the children are under 15.
81% of the children are under 19/19.

Occupations: N=115
The following listing includes ONLY those occupations which were represented more than 5 times:

Students (HS-grad school) = 30 (25% of participants)
Mid-Level Managers, Administrators = 11 (8%)
Law (attorneys, lawyers, paralegals, law clerks) = 7 (6%)
Education (Teachers and 1 Teaching Assistant) = 7 (6%)
Homemakers = 7 (6%)
Medical/Dental/Health Science Careers = 7 (6%)
Office Managers = 7 (6%)

Other occupations that were represented multiple times, but less than 5 times: Librarians, Administrative Assistants/Personal Assistants, Scientists, Retail Sales/Customer Service, Writers and Editors, Professors, Consultants and Counselors.

To refresh your memory, participants were given a list of forty-two characters from both series, along with two blanks (one for each series). They were asked to check off the five characters they liked most, and to asterisk the ONE character that was their favorite. Two participants could not choose a MOST FAVORITE. Five participants chose one MOST FAVORITE from each series. Most participants chose ONE MOST FAVORITE CHARACTER. Here are their choices, in descending order of fanlove:

44 votes = Spike
15 votes = Buffy
12 votes = Angel
10 votes = Willow
8 votes = Wesley
7 " = Giles
3 " = Anya, Cordelia, and Lindsey (tied)
2 " = Doyle and Xander (tied)

Receiving one vote each: Andrew, Ethan, Fred, Illyria, Jonathan, Lorne, Tara

No "MOST FAVORITE CHARACTER" = 2

Looking at ALL the characters checked off as favorites - AND INCLUDING THOSE ASTERISKED - gives us a second listing of "Pets" - by Favorite Character - a more generalized way of looking at fans' favorites. In other words, how many votes (TOTAL) did each character get? Here are those choices, in descending order of fanlove:

79 Spike
53 Wesley
49 Willow
47 Angel
46 Giles
45 Buffy
31 Cordelia
29 Anya
28 Faith
25 Xander
16 Fred
15 Oz
14 Lorne
13 Lilah, Lindsey, Tara (tied)
11 Darla and Dru
10 Doyle
8 Andrew
7 Gunn
6 Clem
4 Jonathan
3 Connor and Illyria (tied)
2 Glory, Gwen, Harmony, Jenny Calendar, Joyce, Riley (tied)
1 Dawn, Ethan, Knox, Mr. Gordo, Nikki Wood

The next part will focus on plotlines.
