James Marsters Learns of Library Donation
Representatives of the Whedonverse Multimedia Project attended Houston SlayerCon from March 31 - April 4. While we didn't have anything big planned for fans, we did have a little special something for James Marsters.
The portrait to your left [click HERE to see it!]was printed on the front of a card that I, as organizer of the Project, handed to Mr. Marsters during the Platinum Ticket Holders autograph and gift-giving session on Saturday April 2nd.
James had an expression of awe on his face as he looked at the card. "Did you draw this?"
I explained that Erin Allen (erinallen.com), who had previously drawn portraits of him as MacBeth and Spike, did the artwork. We thought it would be nice for James to have a portrait that looks like himself now. I then handed him the original artwork, which is a 5' x 7' pencil drawing that I had placed in a silver frame.
I told him that I was the organizer of a group called the Whedonverse Multimedia Project that donates Buffy, Angel and Firefly DVDs to public libraries. I told him that in the weeks prior to the convention that his fans donated a whole bunch of DVDs to the Modesto Public Library in appreciation for his work.
His face absolutely lit up and he said that the project was a "really great idea." I think he said some other things too, but I have a hard time remembering my own name after taking to such a charming and handsome man. I am a big fan after all. Suffice to say, he was quite pleased.
I further explained my hopes that if more people get to see him and all the others who brought the Whedonverse to life that they would fall in love with their work too and follow everyone's careers from here onward.
Then I got a hug!
I meant to say something during the Q&A session for James, but it didn't quite work out the way I had hoped, plus I'm not sure anyone would have heard me since fans weren't supplied with microphones. My apologies for not making a formal announcement at the event.
All total, the Project donated 2 complete sets of Buffy (Seasons1-7), 2 complete sets of Angel (seasons 1-5) and a copy of the Firefly series. In addition, one fan donated a complete set of Buffy on her own.
Thanks to fans, the Modesto Public Library and those living within the Stanislaus County Library System will have much greater access to these materials due to their generous support.
