 | James Marsters- Civilized Man - review "Civilized Man" is out...here's a review |
The day before yesterday I finally got my copy of "Civilized Man", Yeah! I ran immediately to my CD-player, put it in, listened to it and here is my first impression:

James Marsters' first solo album is a really great mix of different music-styles, so I can`t say it`s pure rock or blues or something, it has a bit of all... For those of you who expected a GotR-like album, you could be disappointed, but if you are curios and impartial you`ll be surprised in a positiv way.
The album is less rock, but more blues and sometimes kind of dreamy. Nevertheless Ghost of the Robot-fans will already know many tracks, cause James has rerecorded songs like "Runaway" (now called "No Promises") and "This Town" (both known from the GotR EP "It`s Nothing") in a new version. Besides he recorded some old songs f.e. "Katie" and "Smile".
Katie ~ Known from "the good old days", nevertheless this version can convince, simply very beautifully arranged, with power and rock.
Bad ~ WOW! That is James! this one is making me "want to be bad", it rocks! Yeah!
This Town ~ Known from the GotR EP "It`s Nothing", it`s a calm ballade, with a little "country-touch"
Smile ~ very beautiful version, just James and the piano. James at his best, he shows the variability of his voice. One of my favorites.
For What I Need ~ Thatīs blues, yeah! very straight and clear. This one fits with James powerful voice and an originally guitar.
Long Time ~ Oh, what a contrast! Dreamy song, it has a kind of ease...
Every Man Thinks God Is On His Side (music and lyrics by Andrew Rosenthal) ~ another quite calm song, it reminds me of some old Melissa Etheridge songs, don`t know why ;)
Poor Robyn ~ Contrast again, it`s a kind of 70s style mixed with pop. Imagine you lie on a green meadow and enjoying the sun: this song would fit...
No Promises ~ also this one is known from the GotR EP "Itīs Nothing" (called "Runaway"). I love the song, but Iīm not happy with this version...For me itīs too fast (Iīve always the impression James wants to end this song as soon as possible...) and it`s too much "80s-like"...
Patricia ~ Oh I like the piano in the backround! Pleasantly played and quite a haunting melody.
Civilized Man ~ Blues again, just a boy and his guitar...great!
In summary it`s a great and good composed CD, my personal highlights are Katie, Bad, Smile and For What I Need. You don`t have to be a James Marsters Fan to love that stuff, but if you don`t like Blues, Rock and Country you`ll probably don`t like it...
Order CD
...Iīm really looking forward to the forthcoming gigs to hear the songs live and unfiltered!
