Talk Time

This week, we discuss a serious subject: school violence
Tragic events like the shootings at Columbine High School or Red Lake High in Minnesota raise concern about school violence. But as horrible and frightening these incidents are, they are also rare. Nevertheless, they let us ask questions about the causes of school violence, and although they may only be the top of the iceberg, there can be few doubts that far too many students fall victim of violent crimes in school.
According to crime statistics, the risk of being affected by school violence is twice as high in middle school than it is in high school. But what are the reasons for this signifficant peak? Eearly adolescence is a difficult age, maybe many students have simply never learned proper social behavior? Or is it the fact that many students of different social backgrounds come into contact for the first time in middle school? Many people even blame violent TV shows for the increase of school vionlence, a study of the New York State Psychiatric Institute from 2002 suggests that children who watch more than an hour of television a day during their early teens, are more likely to be violent in later life. What do think:

-What are the main reasons for violence in schools?
-Have you ever experienced violence in your own school?
-Do you think TV has an influence on the behaviour of young people?
-Do you think school uniforms ccould better the situation, as they prevent envy among students from different social backgrounds?
