TEAM SPIRIT

Chuck Cyphers revisits his days as Sunnydale’s psycho swimming coach from “Go Fish”

by Mike Stokes

The scariest thing about the diabolical steroid-steam bath-pushing Coach Marin in “Go Fish” is that he may not be all that different from many of the sadistic gym teachers that have strutted through high school halls since the beginning of organized sports.

“I go back to the ‘50s, and they were pretty rough guys,” says Chuck Cyphers of the coaches he remembers from his high school days. “They were just guys who didn’t take any guff. If you were on teams, you towed the line. Not like today where you give people some lip. They didn’t take any of it back then.”

Every coach dreams of delivering his own Knute Rockne “Win one for the Gipper” speech, and Cyphers remembers Coach Marin’s twisted take on it.

“I remember doing the scene where I get Buffy to jump in the tank and tell her about winning,” he says with a chuckle. “How important winning is, you know – win no matter what you have to do. Where’s your school spirit?”

Cypher has had the opportunity to play a lot of coaches since he first hitchhiked across the country to begin his acting career 30 years ago. But when he’s not barking our orders or counting jumping jacks, he relishes his quiet time tending to his two California ranches.

“I keep busy on them,” Cyphers says. “There’s plenty of work to do all the time, so it keeps my mind off ‘the biz.’”
