 | Drew's Company Drew Goddard talks in this new interview about his first days on the Buffy set and more. Read why he was schocked about the death of Tara. |
Sometimes it's good to be last. A perfect example of that would be writer Drew Goddard. A production assistant and aspiring writer in Hollywood just a few years ago, Drew was an avowed Joss Whedon-junkie and Buffy fanatic with the crazy dream of someday working on his favorite show.
After paying his dues and honing his craft, Drew eventually shopped around a spec script that garnered a lot of positive attention, including that of Whedon-verse show-runners, David Greenwalt (Angel) and Marti Noxon (Buffy). They liked his writing so much that they had an internal spat over who got dibs on hiring this new guy, with Marti ultimately coming out victorious because she found the script first. And so Drew became the last man hired for the Buffy the Vampire Slayer writer's room before the show ended? a fact Drew still can't believe to this day! Three years later, the talented writer has also worked on Angel and is now happily contributing to the adventures of another super heroine, Sydney Bristow on Alias. And while he may love his new spy girl, Drew is always happy to go back and talk about his first love - Buffy.
How crazy was it to be courted by both David Greenwalt and Marti Noxon to write for their shows?
It was one of those surreal experiences to pick up the phone one day and hear. "Hi Drew. David Greenwalt." I'd been watching these shows religiously. The same thing with Marti, I thought I was going to wreck my car. I remember driving home from the interview and just shaking. You work so hard and not only do you get a job on a show, but a job on your favorite show.
Do you remember your first day on the Buffy set?
I got to come in at the end of Season Six. I do remember my first day. They were shooting "Villains" and it was the scene where Xander, Buffy and Dawn are having a conversation that went like, "I can't believe Warren killed Tara and now Willow is crazy." I had been spoiler-free up until then! They go, "Cut," going about their business and meanwhile, I'm standing there going, "They killed Tara!! Jesus Christ, somebody do something!" I was in shock. I was devastated. [laughs]
How was it working in your first professional writers' room?
Luckily, everyone was such a joy to work with. Joss created an environment where people aren't trying to knife one another in the back. Part of that is because the show is so clearly Joss' that there is now way to overtake him, and he just hires good people. I had been around writing staffs full of Machiavellian intrigue, and this was the exact opposite. They were so helpful with what I needed to do and not do.
