Although CBS was clearly on the map, the absence of old faithful Everybody Loves Raymond caused some deterioration. Season eight of King of Queens, now back Monday at 8 p.m., scored a respectable 7.4/11 in the overnights (#2), 10.43 million viewers (#2), and a 3.4/10 among adults 18-49 (#3). Former time period occupant Still Standing opened with a comparable 7.6/12 in the overnights (#1), with 11.11 million viewers (#1), and a 3.2/10 among adults 18-49 (#2) nationally on the year-ago evening. That led into the series-premiere of sitcom How I Met Your Mother (Overnights: #2, 7.9/11; Viewers: #3, 10.65 million; A18-49: #3, 3.6/ 9 at 8:30 p.m.), which built from King of Queens by 7 percent in the overnights, 220,000 viewers and 6 percent among adults 18-49. Comparably, that was also similar to opening levels for former failed time period occupant Listen Up on the year-ago night (Overnights: #1, 8.1/12; Viewers: #1, 11.75 million; A18-49: #2, 3.6/10 on Sept. 20, 2004). Keep in mind that both King Of Queens and How I Met Your Mother (as well as programming on NBC, Fox, UPN and the WB) faced football on ABC. Last year, the competition on ABC in the 8 p.m. hour was, again, The Benefactor.

Fox had mixed news, with another solid performance for Prison Break at 9 p.m. despite lackluster lead-in support from sitcoms Arrested Development and Kitchen Confidential from 8-9 p.m. Season three of the relocated Arrested Development kicked off with a paltry 3.8/ 6 in the overnights (#5), 4.58 million viewers (#5), and a 2.0/ 6 among adults 18-49 (#4) at 8 p.m. Even worse was the series-premiere of sitcom Kitchen Confidential at a 3.4/ 5 in the overnights (#5), 4.32 million viewers (#5), and a 2.0/ 5 among adults 18-49 (#5) at 8:30 p.m. Comparably, both sitcoms performed at levels close to former failed serialized drama North Shore on the year ago evening (Overnights: #5, 3.4/ 5; Viewers: #5, 4.08 million; A18-49: #4t, 1.8/ 5 on Sept. 20, 2004). Even so, the good news for Fox (and proof that Prison Break is here to stay) was growth for the recently introduced 9 p.m. drama out of Kitchen Confidential of a hefty 71 percent in the overnights (3.4/ 5 to 5.8/ 9), 3.48 million viewers (4.32 million to 7.80 million), and 90 percent among 18-49 (2.0/ 5 to 3.8/ 9).
