 | Serenity Named Best Sci-Fi film of the year on IGN IGN have named Serenity as the best sci-fi film of the year. Serenity also won best trailer, best story and was runner up in best film category. |
Best Sci-Fi
Serenity
Studio: Universal Pictures
Cast: Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres, Adam Baldwin, Alan Tudyk, Jewel Staite
Filmmakers: Joss Whedon (Writer-Director)
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Why It Rocked: Serenity, Joss Whedon's big-screen version of his defunct series Firefly wasn't exactly a run-away hit at the box office. But we have a feeling that this underappreciated gem will become a sci-fi classic in time. The film is light on the kind of special effects that are typically plentiful in films of this genre, but it's big on heart, integrity and character development - something sorely lacking in too many mainstream films of any kind. To say that Serenity is an exciting, emotional rollercoaster of a film - one that has plenty of action - is not an overstatement in the least.
Runners Up:
Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith
War of the Worlds
Best Story
Serenity
Studio: Universal Pictures
Cast: Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres, Adam Baldwin, Alan Tudyk, Jewel Staite
Filmmakers: Joss Whedon (Writer-Director)
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Why It Rocked: Joss Whedon's Serenity might have been based on a TV series, but you wouldn't have to know a single thing about it going into this film... that's the beauty of it. You're brought in during the middle of the action, but within minutes you're completely immersed in the story as if you've know the characters forever. And that's the film's real strength... the well-written characters. Much like the old Star Trek, which is an obvious influence, Whedon overcomes the lack of eye-popping special effects by creating genuine tension and emotion via the time honored tradition of actually scripting interesting, intriguing, and real characters, characters you not only identify with, but end up caring a great deal for.
Runners Up:
Good Night, and Good Luck
Broken Flowers
Brokeback Mountain
Downfall
