The fans who kept insisting this would be a huge, break out hit, and then were greatly disappointed when it wasn't missed the point. So did the reactionary naysayer's who were happy to gloat when it didn't exactly set the box office on fire. The fact is, this movie's very existence is incredible and a true victory for those involved and for those who adore it like myself. Based on an expensive, low rated science fiction series that didn't last a full season, this is a film that Joss Whedon seemed to will into production against overwhelming odds. The passion the fans have for Firefly was clearly mirrored by Whedon and his cast, who made a wonderfully thrilling, taut film that continued the story of Firefly and expanded it into a dynamic piece of cinematic entertainment. This could very well be the swan song for the crew of Serenity, but it's an extremely satisfying one, filled with all of the humor, cleverness and, of course, the pain and loss that Whedon is so skilled at delivering to his characters and to his audience. A fun sci-fi adventure film to newcomers to the Firefly universe, and a culmination of something much bigger to the loyal fandom, Whedon deftly served two master's with his cinematic directorial debut.

2. Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan
Wrath of Khan, widely considered the best Trek film, is a direct sequel to an episode of the classic Trek series. Admiral James T. Kirk (William Shatner) takes over the USS Enterprise's "little training cruise" from Capt. Spock (Leonard Nimoy) after Starfleet loses contact with the secretive science lab Regula One. Turns out the lab and its staff (including Kirk's ex-flame Carol and estranged son David) have been taken hostage, along with the powerful Genesis device, by Kirk's old foe, Khan Noonien Singh (Ricardo Montalban). Khan and his crew have escaped from the dead planet they've been marooned on for decades and are seeking revenge on the man who consigned them there: James T. Kirk. Kirk also deals with getting older, a son he doesn't know but who hates him, and the ultimate sacrifice made by Spock to save the Enterprise from imminent destruction.- -S
