 | Jump the shark The person who wrote this article says, that it had been better if Buffy would have ended after season 5. Read more! |
Being among the first to watch good television programs has its drawbacks. Sometimes you see signs of these shows being past their prime just as the masses jump on the bandwagon.
I can't imagine how frustrated early fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer must have been when, at the last minute, the network told Joss Whedon, "Okay, why don't you do a sixth season of this thing?"
You see, Whedon and his writing team, knowing that the series was coming to an end at the close of season five, had decided to kill off their heroine with a dramatic flourish.
In bringing Buffy back from the dead, Whedon and his writers jumped the shark.
That's not to say there wasn't the occasional flash of brilliance from the team, but overall, Buffy should have ended at with season five, with the Slayer making the ultimate sacrifice. That was, after all, what the show was all about.

| delipa | 10.07.06 - 18:18 | What a fucking moron. First of all, it was Joss's decision to make a S6 and S7, not the networks. He could've let it end if he wanted.
Secondly, that's *not* what the show was about. The show was about growing up and being human and still doing good things. S6 was awesome and it seems that more and more people are liking now that there's some perspective. Honestly, I don't think many ever gave it a chance because OHMIGOD! S/B OHMIGOD! The scoobies aren't best buddies anymore! OHMIGOD! The issues that the writers had been laying the groundwork for since S1 are coming to the fore!
Jeez. Shallow asshats. | | Angelus88 | 10.07.06 - 18:55 | | Yeah, yeah!!! You're right!!!! | | Buffbuff | 10.07.06 - 22:26 | O my, I Love season 6, It broght oss episodes like Once more whit feeling, Tabula Rasa, and manny others.
and I Love that Buffy did't die at the end of the show. I Love when Buffy was back from the ded. If the show had ended after season 5, The Slayervers whold kind off be over, but as long as Buffy live's, there will be book's and thing's like that.
| | FGaia13 | 10.07.06 - 23:37 | | I think you guys have to remember that whoever wrote this, is probably Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan too, and just ever single fan out there, everyone has a favorite episode, maybe someone's favorite episode is Chosen, or Once More With Feeling, or maybe it's Something Blue. And by saying that you understand that every fan has a different opinion, every fan has a favorite episode, and some fans have different endings, like season finales, not every season finale is great, some season finales are better than others. But I have to say that I love that Buffy did two more seasons, but, I do love the first ending that Joss Whedon chose. After all he DID choose it, he got the call, that he was cancelled. And he knew he had to go out somehow, and I have to say, that Buffy living her life is great. But her making the ultimate sacrifice for me, is definitely a better ending. | | FGaia13 | 10.07.06 - 23:39 | | -And for short, every fan has a different opinion, so, don't bash them for it because they don't agree with yours, let them be, and after all we're all fans, and we should support each other. (Geez, is that cheesy or what?) | | delipa | 11.07.06 - 01:00 | | Anytime an opinion is pronounced in a declaritive statement backed up by foundless 'facts', I question whether the person is a fan or not. Usage of such phrases as 'jump the shark', 'past its prime' and others with similar cannotations is, in fact, insulting to the creator, writers and other fans. | | rt | 11.07.06 - 02:02 | | Delipa, you hypocrite. Jump the shark and past its prime are opinions and different perspectives which you claim to support. Someone critiques the show and you go crazy because their opinion is different from yours. | | FGaia13 | 11.07.06 - 04:13 | | It might be insulting, but there are episodes of Buffy that were not the greatest, and by pointing them out I would be insulting Joss Whedon and other fans, but yet, that's still my opinion isn't it? Whether or not the person who said this is an actual fan or not, (even though it sounds like they are indeed a fan) they will stand by their opinion no matter what. Sure, you will not understand them, but that's no need to go tribal and get very angry. And I don't mind cursing but I don't think that the F-Word is necessary in this situation. :) | | rt | 11.07.06 - 05:16 | | I agree with the author. Chill out delipa. | | The__Slayer | 11.07.06 - 17:46 | | Season 6 and 7 were the best seasons of Btvs.. | | cherylforba | 11.07.06 - 17:52 | | Now THAT is funny, the slayer. Just sayin. | | rt | 11.07.06 - 19:14 | | Lol the_slayer is always making jokes. | | SpuffyFreak | 11.07.06 - 21:56 | | No, I actually agree with The__Slayer. In my opinion, all Seasons were magnificent. Though my all favourite Season is the 6th. YOU people should chill out. What does it matter if someone thinks that BtVS should've ended in its 5th Season?! Well, let 'em say it, they obviously know nothing. | | rt | 12.07.06 - 01:55 | | Denial. It's what spuffies do best. | | SpuffyFreak | 12.07.06 - 03:52 | | Lie. Is what Bangels do best. ;-) | | AvidBuff | 12.07.06 - 14:56 | Personally I thought season and 7 had excellent eps. But... as the end of season 7 approached the scoobies no longer existed. People called Buffy, Xander, Willow, Giles, Anya and Dawn walked and talked but little resembled the chars that I grew to love. And no reason was given for the radical personality shifts.
BTW... nice to be back. It's been what a year since I've been able to log on to the site! One day it just wouldn't let me in and nothing... not changing the pwd or creating new ids would fix the prob. And of course not one email addy would accept an email from me so that I could ask for help.
So I'm real happy for the new design... it let me create an account using my old ID. :) | | Edgeoforever | 12.07.06 - 15:10 | | Yup. It did. And the fact that a few die hards don't think so, doesn't change the reality. Buffy ceased to be the hero - she became the doormat victim instead, hoop, shark, ready, steady, jump! | | zutalors | 12.07.06 - 15:51 | | Funny thing: they try to "depress" Angel too, to make the same certain other character look better - same device really, they used on BTVS. Thank God Cordy woke up and our Angel got to say: " I see teeth, I play dentist" Suddenly, the show was fun again. I wish I heard something like that on BTVS - but since I didn't....take it away, sharky boy! | | Zocafoca | 12.07.06 - 19:02 | | heh, heh- funny paralell if you remember Buffy's ex, Riley catching her lying with the perp in the crypt. Tha pathetic thing there was, that she never really overcame that low point. While with Angel, the blast from the past only served to remind us (and him) how far above Angel was to what they had been trying to make him in that last season. | | delipa | 13.07.06 - 20:27 | First off, RT, quit making things up. That second response was to the fgaia and her opinion that the author is a 'fan'. Anyone can think what they want, but if you're going to use those phrases, I don't think it's out of someone's realm to question them.
You people want to talk about denial. Yeah, they made other characters look bad to make Spike look better. Grow the hell up. Look at the previous years and tell me the personality traits exhibited in the later years aren't present in S1-S3? Go ahead and try it. The Scoobs *always* took the easy way out and question Buffy's opinion at every turn, all the while depending on her. As for Buffy being a 'doormat'... Jesus. What would you call her relationship with Angel? He treats her like dirt, a moron, a twit, lies to her, leaves her and she still falls at his feet. *That* is a doormat.
The show isn't 'fun' anymore! Awww... And wonder why I think you're a shallow moron who can't follow a storyline for more than 2 episodes. | You have to be logged in to comment. | |
