David Boreanaz Interview

David Boreanaz makes his TV return in new crime drama Bones.
Best known as the vampire with a soul in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its spin-off series, Angel David Boreanaz is back on TV - playing a human this time. In Bones, David is Special Agent Seeley Booth, a former army sniper who teams up with forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan (Emily Deschanel) on baffling murder investigations.
How does it feel being in such a different show from Angel?
It feels great. It's refreshing that it really is something new and he's a great character because he has much going for him, and has a lot of depth.
What did you know about the world of the FBI? How did you research the role?
I spent a lot of time with Mike Rosso from the LAPD, who's been with the force for 25 years. I trained with him and went through the scenarios and procedures of entering crime scenes. I then applied that to the character, while maintaining a sense of where Booth comes from. His grandfather was in WWII, his father was in the army and his relationship with his hast has to be off-balance with his militaristic standpoint. I think that's what gives him an edge.
What do you think of the chemistry between Booth and Brennan?
Hopefully they won't get together too quickly, but there's definitely trust factor between the two of us that we bring to our work. There are things that are going on in my life that can be related to Booth, and the same with Emily, so we both trust each other's secrets and apply that to the dynamics of a scene. It creates chemistry.
What characteristics do you think you share with Booth?
He has a child and so do I. The difficulties of bringing a child up and that love. Also his attitude; he fights for the common man and is a very blue-collar guy, and I'm from Philadelphia and I've been around that - I know the struggle that comes with sticking up for the person who got beat up. You want to catch these guys and put them away so they won't do it again.
How do you balance nappies with work?
Jaden is at an age now where he's going to preschool so he only wears nappies at night, but he gives me a lot of moments to cherish. The stuff I see him every day, there is something you learn and apply to your work, and that keeps me gong and keeps me focused in this horrible town of Los Angeles.
Do you find forensic stuff gruesome? (Spoilers)
We did a scene that revolved around a three-year-old boy who was murdered and we found his body, and I just couldn't look at the skeleton remains because I have a four-year-old. Just seeing that was pretty damaging and gruesome. Things like that are more psychological when they have a meaning behind it. Angel was just special effects.
Do you stay in touch with any of your old co-stars from the Angel days?
No, it's done.
THE REAL THING
Meet the real Temperance Brennan: Kathy Reichs. The forensic anthropologist has turned her real-life experiences into a string of best-selling novels, including Deja Dead and Death Du Jour, all featuring the character Temperance Brennan.
"What Tempe does professionally is almost a mirror image of what I do," Kathy says. "She goes to crime scenes, she works in the lab, she works on identification of unidentified remains, she works through bone to try to figure out cause and manner of death."
Kathy is a producer on the series and has turned up to the set to give advice. "She's full of stories," David Boreanaz says. "She does such an amazing job, although it's brutal. But to her it's just a job, like buttering bagels."
The Tempe in the series is based more closely on Kathy than the Tempe in the books. In Bones, Tempe is an author as well as a forensic anthropologist.
For that reason, Emily Deschanel, who plays Tempe, says she didn't read Kathy's books before filming the pilot.
"I didn't want to completely inform my character," she says, "because I'm not playing the character in her book, even though I'm named after her."
However, Emily says her mother - Twin Peaks actress Mary Jo Deschanel - was already a huge Kathy Reichs fan and was thrilled when her daughter got the role.
"She said, 'I've read all of her books. It's so exciting!'"
