A Chance For Happiness

By: Amber Andersen

"Well, it's been a good fight." I said, punching Angel in the shoulder lightly. "I'll miss you."

Angel nodded in acknowledgement.

I punched him off the platform with a viciousness that was startling. Angel rolled on the floor below, and muttered my name urgently.

I turned to Cordelia, and stared at her for what I knew would be the last time.

I embraced her tightly, kissing her for a long time. I pulled away and said, "Too bad we'll never know-" I paused and let my demon come forth, "If this is the face you could learn to love."

She stared at me tearfully. I turned and prepared to leap for the wire.

"Doyle!!" a voice shouted shrilly. "NO! There's another way!"

"Angel, man, there is no other way." I said impatiently. "The thing's gonna detonate in a second!"

"Jump past the wire!" he shouted up at me. "Maybe you can miss being fully exposed to the light!"

"I'll try, man." I promised.

I leaped at the light. I felt like I was being ripped apart. I managed to unplug the detonater. I tumbled to the floor, barely alive. My skin was scorched and smoking.

Cordelia ran to me, sobbing loudly. She flipped me over onto on my back, and stared down at me fearfully. Angel came up behind her.

She started hitting me hysterically, not even noticing that I was still in my demon guise. "Why did you do that? Are you crazy? You could have gotten killed!"

"Thanks for caring, Cordy." I muttered shakily, since she was still beating me. "Could you please stop beating me up?"

She stopped, deciding instead to stare at me angrily. Angel calmly pushed her to one side, and helped me up. I shook the demon off, and said to Cordy, "Cordelia, about that kiss. . ."

She yelled hotly, "It was a great kiss! I just wish you hadn't been about to jump to your death before you did it! Now I'll never know if you only did it because you were about to die, or if you actually-"

I broke her off, kissing her savagely. I stayed locked on her lips for what seemed like an eternity. I pulled away only when I needed to breathe.

"Care?" I asked hoarsely. "I do." "I-I. . . " I trailed off, reluctant to tell her how I truly felt for fear of how she would react.

"You what?" she questioned.

"I love you, Cordelia."

She smiled brightly, and asked softly, "Well, what are you waiting for? Ask me out already. Before something else happens."

"Cordelia, would you like to go out for dinner sometime?"

"I'd love to." she answered, for once not sounding superficial at all.

I grinned, and pulled her to me once more.
