"In the Dark"

Written by: Doug Petrie Original Air Date: October 19, 1999

Rachel
A young blonde woman (Rachel) is running down a dark street, frequently looking behind her, then ducking into an alley. She cautiously looks around the corner before stepping back onto the street. She is grabbed and thrown into a trash receptacle.
Rachel tries to defend herself
She knows the man who has just assaulted her. She addresses him by name, Lenny. She begs him not to hurt her. Lenny is raging against her, accusing her of humiliating him "again". Rachel denies doing anything wrong. She attempts a calmer approach, trying to diffuse his anger, but is ineffective.
Lenny pulls a gun
He continues to threaten her, finally pulling a gun and aiming it at her. Rachel begs him not to shoot her.
Angel breaks it up
Angel grabs Lenny from behind and forces him to drop the gun. He tells Lenny to stop terrorizing Rachel. Lenny grabs a board and strikes at Angel with it. Angel ducks the blow and knocks him out.
Rachel, Angel
Angel asks Rachel if she's okay. She wants to know if Lenny is dead.

Angel assures her he'll be fine but he'll be unconscious for a while. Rachel is surprised that Angel showed up. He reminds her "that was the deal".

Spike entertains himself
Spike is standing on a rooftop above the alley, taking in all that has just transpired. He does a running narration (in his own inimitable way) on the events below him as he makes up dialog between Angel and Rachel that comprises a running monologue.
Spike continues his commentary
In an exaggerated feminine tone, ""Oh, how can I thank you, you mysterious black clad hunk of a night thing?" Then, in a mocking, manly tone, "No need, little lady. Your tears of gratitude are enough for me. You see, ma'am, I was once a bad ass vampire. But love, and a pesky curse, defanged me and now I'm just a big fluffy puppy with bad teeth."
Spike lights a smokeSpike's view of the alley below
Angel and Rachel leave the scene as Spike lights up a cigarette. He continues talking to himself, making clear his desire to retrieve the "Gem of Amarra" and hints at dark plans for Angel.

It's evening, Oz drives into town and pulls his van to a stop outside the office of Angel Investigations.

Cordy, happy to present a bill
Inside the office of Angel Investigations, Cordelia is working at the computer while Doyle is relaxing with a newspaper. Cordy enthuses about the case just finished, the girl with the abusive boyfriend, and gleefully pulls the printout she's been working on from the printer. She's pleased to be doing an actual invoice, since she expects they will actually get paid for this job.
Doyle isn't sure about payment
Doyle doesn't share her enthusiasm or certainty that the invoice will result in payment. He reminds her there's a difference between billing and getting paid.
Cordy figures bill = pay
Cordelia feels that if she sends the bill, they'll get paid. That's the way it's supposed to be.
Doyle tries to be a realist
Doyle reminds her it doesn't always work that way. Cordelia isn't happy to have Doyle stick the reality pin in her billing balloon.
Oz arrives
Oz enters the office. Cordelia glances up from her desk to see him, a look of surprise on her face. She repeats his name several times but doesn't formally introduce him to Doyle who's watching the scene, a bit confused.

Doyle surmises the guy standing in the office must be someone named Oz based on Cordelia's repeating his name over and over.
Cordy, Oz
Cordelia inquires about things in Sunnydale, Oz tells her things are good. There is an uncomfortable silence as neither seems to know what else to say. Oz asks her if they're finished, she says yes, they both look relieved.
Oz meets Doyle
Doyle coughs in an attempt to remind Cordelia he's still in the room. Cordy finally introduces Oz to Doyle, they shake hands.
Oz asks about Angel
Oz asks a bit about the detective business.

Cordelia tells him she's an actress, she just helps Angel out when she's not doing acting jobs. Oz asks to see Angel.

Angel notices he has company
Angel is walking through his apartment, reading a book. The elevator comes to a stop in the apartment carrying Cordelia, Doyle and Oz. Angel greets them without lifting his eyes from the book. He then looks toward them and sees that Cordy and Doyle have company.
Oz offers the ring
Angel and Oz exchange greetings, Angel invites them into the apartment. Oz tells him he's in LA for a gig but also came to give Angel something. He extends his hand, offering a ring.
Angel takes the ring
Angel looks at it, but doesn't take it. He recognizes it as the "Gem of Amarra". Oz confirms that is indeed what it is. Angel pauses a while longer before taking the ring from Oz's outstretched hand. Oz tells Angel Buffy wanted him to have it.
Cordy asks about Buffy
The mention of Buffy's name leads Cordelia to ask how she is. Oz tells her Buffy is good.
Doyle is excited about the ring
Doyle impatiently interrupts the small talk, wanting to talk about the ring which he recognizes as being something significant.

As Angel contemplates the ring in his hand, Doyle urges him to put it on but Angel makes no effort to do so.
Cordy wonders why Doyle cares about jewelry
Cordelia, who has no idea what the "Gem of Amarra" is, is puzzled by Doyle's enthusiastic interest in the ring. She wants to know why he's suddenly so into jewelry.

Doyle explains to her that when the ring is worn by a vampire, that vampire is unkillable.
the Gem of AmaraOz says Buffy wanted Angel to have the ring
Angel looks sullen, he comments on it being Buffy who sent the ring. Oz tells him that Spike was tearing up Sunnydale looking for it, Buffy battled with him leading to his leaving town. She wanted the ring in trustworthy hands so she asked him to deliver it to Angel.

Cordelia begins to make some comment about the fact Buffy didn't even send a note along with the ring but is cut short by a "don't go there" look from Angel.
Doyle wants to play 'stake the vampire'
Doyle picks up a stake, he wants Angel to put the ring on so he can stake him. He assures Angel it will be fun. Angel tells him maybe they'll do that later. Doyle presses, Angel repeats his "not now" stance on the issue.
Cordy decides to go drinking with Doyle
Doyle doesn't understand Angel's reluctance but decides to drop it. He's going to celebrate at a bar with a drink. He heads out of the apartment, followed closely by Cordy who invites Oz along.
Angel hides the ring in the sewer
Angel tells Oz to go with them, he remains behind. He continues pondering the ring in his hand for a brief moment, then places it in his pocket and heads for the sewers.

In the sewers, Angel removes the ring from his pocket and conceals it under a loose brick.

In the office the next day, Cordy is getting some water for Doyle from the cooler. She sits at the desk across from him.
Doyle struggles with the aspirinCordy helps with the aspirin
Doyle is apparently more than a little hung over from the previous night. He tells Cordy a mind splitting vision would be a good thing now because it would surely kill him. As he's talking, he's struggling with a bottle of aspirin, trying to pry the cotton out of the top of the bottle to access the tablets but having no luck dislodging it.

Cordelia takes the bottle from him, pulls the cotton out, and hands Doyle some aspirin. He takes them from her and washes them down with the water.

Angel, doing Tai-ChiRachel calls Angel with news
Angel is in his apartment, doing Tai-Chi. He stops to answer the phone. It's Rachel, telling him that Lenny is out of jail on some kind of technicality. Angel lets her know he'll be right over.

Angel approaches his car
Angel approaches his car in the underground garage. As he starts to open the door, he is hit over the head with a board, sending him reeling into the wall.
Spike
Spike is there, in game face. He tells Angel he has something he's looking for and he wants it. Angel knows what he's after and lets him know he's not going to get it, Angel intends to keep the ring safely with him.

Spike swings the board at Angel which he catches, turning it on Spike, catching him in the chin. He then hits him in the stomach and kicks him to the ground.
fight continues
Spike gets back up, still wielding the board. He rushes Angel who grabs a pipe overhead and raises both legs in time to drive his feet into Spike's chest, sending him sprawling. Spike gets back up and continues his assault with the board but Angel manages to dodge the blows and avoid contact with it. Spike attempts to pin him down on the hood of a car but Angel manages to kick him off and take the board away from him.
Spike has a plan
Angel wants to know if brawling is the extent of Spike's plan to get the ring. Spike assures him he had a plan, but he got bored and decided to take the direct route. He hits Angel and pins him against the wall, then throws him against a door, face first. Spike's had enough playing around, he wants the ring.
Angel gets serious
Angel, now in game face, turns to face Spike. They continue to brawl in the parking garage. Angel throws Spike into the wall, leaving him crumpled in a heap just as Doyle and Cordelia enter.
the fight is over
Spike takes immediate notice of Cordelia, complimenting her on her appearance as he gets to his feet.
Cordy enjoys the compliment
Cordelia enjoys the flattery briefly before remembering just who is dishing out the compliments.
Spike lets Angel know he'll be back
Spike turns to Angel, letting him know he will get the ring and it won't be over until one of them is dusted. He takes off.

Cordelia asks Angel if he's okay. Doyle wants to know if the ring is safe.
Angel is concerned about his friends
Angel tells them the ring is fine, as his face morphs back into its human form. He's concerned about Cordelia and Doyle. He knows Spike could try to use them to get to him and obtain the ring. He tells them to go to Doyle's place since Spike knows Cordelia and Angel believes Spike could find her if wanted to.
Cordy realizes Angel is right
Cordy initially objects, noting that even if Spike found her apartment, he couldn't get in without an invitation. When Doyle points out to her that wouldn't stop him from burning the place down with her in it, she sees the wisdom in Angel's suggestion and agrees to go to Doyle's.
Angel prepares to find Spike
Doyle expresses his concern for Angel, knowing Spike will come after him sooner than later.

Angel assures him he knows and he's prepared to deal with him. He intends to find Spike first.

Doyle, Cordelia
Cordelia and Doyle are at Doyle's apartment, Doyle is on the phone asking questions about any potential Spike sightings of the party on the other end of the line. After determining the contact has no information, Doyle hangs up.
Doyle tells Cordy what he didn't find out
Doyle relays to Cordelia that the contact, "Frankie Tripod", hadn't come up with anything. Doyle suggest to Cordelia that she make herself comfortable since Angel wanted him to reach all of his contacts in his search for info on Spike's whereabouts. He tells her he has a lot of calling to do, it's going to be awhile.
Cordy doesn't like the accommodations
Cordelia isn't anxious to make herself comfortable in Doyle's rather low-rent appearing apartment. They banter about the living conditions briefly then are interrupted by a phone call.
Doyle takes another call
Doyle picks up the receiver, there's no information about Spike, the calling party is looking to collect a debt owed by Doyle. Doyle cuts off the person on the other end of the line, clearly not wanting to deal with the matter, and slams down the receiver.
Cordy tells Doyle Spike is dangerous
Doyle asks Cordelia to fill him in on Spike, he wants to know if he's really all that bad and how concerned he should be.

Cordy assures him Spike is that bad and worse, Doyle should be very concerned.

Rachel
At Rachel's apartment, she seems surprised that Angel actually showed up as he said he would. He tells her he'll get her out of the apartment, someplace where she'll be safe from Lenny.
Angel suggests Rachel get somewhere safe
Rachel hesitates. She's not so sure she wants to go anywhere now. She's been in the cycle of fight, break up, get back together with Lenny for awhile and expects it to continue. She says things are okay between them for awhile after they reunite. She admits she feels she needs him, wants to be with him, wants to believe every time the violence happens that it won't happen again.
Angel tries to convince Rachel
Angel reminds her that Lenny tried to kill her the last time. Rachel admits that she's more afraid of him this time than she's ever been before.
Rachel makes the tough decision
Angel knows she's got a tough decision to make, he tries to help her by defining the choices. He tells her she can take the easy choice, stay with Lenny and wait for the inevitable, or make the harder choice and get out, perhaps leading to her finding a different kind of "love" with someone else.

Rachel realizes he means love without the violence and seems swayed by his argument.

Cody fills Doyle in on Spike's exploits
Cordelia is still at Doyle's, munching on popcorn as she continues filling Doyle in on Spike's history and adventures in Sunnydale. They are interrupted by the phone ringing. Doyle picks up, disguising his voice and answering as a place of business.
Doyle takes a call
It's Angel on the other end, who's not sure who just picked up. He's fitting the forearm mounted devices containing the spring loaded stakes as he talks on the phone. Once Doyle hears Angel's voice, he drops the act, explaining he's trying to "lay low".
Angel prepares to find Spike
Angel wants to know if Doyle came up with anything. Doyle says one of his contacts, Manny, told him he didn't have any information about a vampire named Spike. Doyle found that strange because Manny offered that before Doyle had mentioned Spike's name. Doyle suggests Angel talk to the guy. He tells him he can find Manny at a place called the "Orbit Room" and gives him the location.

Angel slams a guy down onto a table. The guy tells him that Manny has left for the club.

Angel throws a guy against a wall, his hand wrapped firmly around the guy's throat. The guy tells Angel to "try the game".

Angel looks for some answers
Angel throws Manny down onto a poker table then pulls him back up, clutching him by the front of his shirt. Three guys look on, their guns drawn. Angel isn't affected by the threat.
Angel suggests Manny talk
Manny directs the others to put their guns away, then tells Angel he won't tell him anything because Spike would kill him. Angel lets him know that he's just as dangerous to Manny if he doesn't talk as Spike will be to him if he does.

Manny sees Angel's determination and offers up that Spike is "out back".

Angel looks for SpikeSpike's meal, interrupted
Angel exits the club out the back, into the alley, where Spike has apparently just begun feeding on a young woman. Angel intervenes. Spike isn't happy having his meal interrupted. Angel tells the girl to run, she complies.

Spike takes off as well, with Angel in hot pursuit.
Spike is happy to be caughtAngel confronts Spike
The chase is terminated at the end of the alley, which is blocked by a chain link fence. Spike stops and turns to face Angel. He raises his hands over his head and feigns surrender.

Angel suggests Spike isn't too bright thinking he can come to LA and get away with anything.

Spike smiles confidently and lets Angel know maybe he's smarter than Angel thinks he is.
Angel gets caughtSpike, pleased with himself
Angel turns at the sound of chains rattling behind him just in time to see the guy in possession of them as he throws the chains around Angel's neck and yanks him to the ground.

Spike watches smugly, satisfied that his plan to trap Angel has played successfully.

Cordy, Doyle worry about Angel
At Doyle's apartment, Cordelia is waiting by the phone, Doyle is pacing nervously. Cordy notes that they should have heard something from Angel. She's convinced the fact they haven't means trouble.
Doyle, Cordy
Doyle tries to reassure her, suggesting that Angel probably dispatched Spike easily and decided to do something else, maybe "surf".

Cordy remembers that Angel has the ring, so tries to convince herself that he's protected, there's nothing to worry about. As they both try to reassure each other things are okay, it's obvious they are both worried.

Angel in a bind
Angel is in an abandoned warehouse, chained to the ceiling by manacles on his wrists.
the torturer checks his tools
The guy from the alley puts a Mozart LP on an old turntable, then opens an old trunk and begins removing various implements of torture.
Spike tells Angel about Marcus
Spike is giving Angel the background on Marcus, his current associate. He tells Angel that Marcus is an expert in all kinds of torture and that he enjoys his work. Spike also mentions Marcus has a fondness for children, and not just in eating them, implying that love of torture isn't Marcus' only perversion.

Angel twists violently in the chains. Spike leans away from him, smirking.
Marcus examines Angel's skin
Marcus dons a pair of round wire-framed glasses as he walks over to Angel. He tears Angel's shirt open and appreciatively inspects his bare chest. He seems almost in awe that Angel has lived so many years, yet his body shows no real external signs of damage.
Spike urges Marcus to get on with it
Spike is getting impatient and urges Marcus to get on with torturing Angel.
Angel
Marcus gently lays his hand on Angel's chest, over his heart. He notes that Angel has known love and after a brief moment, adds the observation he also has a soul. Spike's impatience is growing, he wants Marcus to get down to business so Spike can get the ring.
Angel gets skewered
Angel makes a wisecrack to Marcus who responds by retrieving one of the metal pokers he's been heating over burning coals in a trash barrel, then drilling it through the lower right quadrant of Angel's chest. Angel barely stifles a scream. Spike smiles, enjoying the scene playing out before him.

Marcus asks what Angel wants
Some time later, Mozart still plays on the turntable as the torturer continues his work. Marcus asks Angel what it is he wants. Angel responds with another wisecrack.
Spike grows impatient
Spike demands to know why Marcus is wasting time, he wants him to get to the subject that matters to him, the whereabouts of the ring.
Spike threatens a staking
Spike expresses his irritation with the symphony that's been playing on the turntable since Marcus began his work, and in his growing frustration breaks a wooden box, grabs a piece of it and threatens Angel with staking if he doesn't reveal where the ring is.
Marcus explains why Spike's threat is useless
Marcus calmly informs him that won't get him anywhere. He points out Angel knows Spike won't kill him before he finds the ring, so Angel knows Spike is bluffing. Spike drops the stake and curtly instructs Marcus to find out where the ring is. Marcus assures Spike that Angel will tell him what he wants to know as he walks away.
Angel doesn't think Spike is too bright
Angel tells Spike he's not too bright for bringing in a vampire to help him find a ring that makes the vampire wearing it invincible. He implies that Marcus will want the ring for himself and leave Spike with nothing.

Spike assures Angel that isn't an issue since Marcus' only interest is in torturing and killing. He tells Angel everyone has their addiction, just as Buffy is Angel's, torture and killing are Marcus'.
Spike taunts Angel about Buffy
The Mozart that's been playing continuously stops. Spike exhales a sigh of relief, happy to finally have some quiet. He continues taunting Angel, telling him he ran into Buffy when he was in Sunnydale and that she didn't mention Angel. He also tells Angel about Buffy's falling into bed with the first college boy to come along, taking pleasure in telling Angel that Buffy was used by the guy. Angel looks away from Spike who continues with his taunt, telling Angel he finds Buffy especially attractive when she's been hurt.
"She's cuter when she's kicking your ass."
Angel snaps and tells him, "She's cuter when she's kicking your ass."

The Mozart symphony resumes. Spike is tired of listening to it and decides to step outside, leaving Marcus to his work.
Spike enjoys the screaming
Marcus rams another hot poker into Angel's thigh. Angel screams.

Spike smiles, enjoying the sound of that "music".

Spike searches for the ringSpike makes a decision
Spike enters Angel's apartment and starts ransacking the place. He's wondering where the ring might be hidden but not keen on wasting a lot of time searching for it himself.

AngelMarcus fires shots through the roof
Marcus is walking around Angel, gun in hand. As he speaks to Angel in soothing tones, he fires a shot into the ceiling, allowing a narrow shaft of sunlight to stream into the warehouse. Marcus wants to know why Angel hid the ring rather than use it. He seems more interested in Angel's motivations for that at this point than in actually discovering the ring's location. He still wants to know exactly what Angel "wants".
Angel twists to avoid the light
Marcus fires once again into the ceiling, allowing another bright beam of sunlight to stream through.

Angel twists himself and pulls back to avoid getting hit by the ray of light.

Spike enters the officeCordy, Doyle confront Spike
Spike enters Angel's office and finds Cordelia and Doyle waiting for him. Cordy is armed with a crossbow which she has pointed at Spike's chest. Doyle has a gun, also trained on Spike.

Cordy threatens Spike with the crossbow. He assures her he can kill her before she can fire it. She realizes that's likely true and reluctantly lowers the weapon.
Spike tells Cordy & Doyle what he wantsCordy realizes they have no choice
Spike tells them he's tired of looking for the ring, he wants them to do it. Doyle wants to know where Angel is. Spike says he's being tortured but he won't give up the location of the ring and considering how stubborn Angel can be, he just might die before that happens. He offers to let Angel go if Cordy and Doyle find the ring and bring it to him.

Cordy is skeptical but realizes that they have little choice.

Spike tells them they have until sundown and where they are to meet him with the ring in their possession. He leaves.

Marcus chooses a new toolAngel works to get the wood splinter
Marcus comments on the horrible things Angel did as Angelus, he knows it's the reason Angel tries to do good, to atone in some way for his past. As Marcus turns his back, Angel notices the large, wooden, stake sized splinter that Spike dropped earlier on the floor, near his feet.
Marcus reminds Angel he controls the pain
Marcus approaches Angel again, telling him he can make the pain go away , (he yanks one of the pokers out accompanied by the sound of Angel screaming) or he can bring it back (he yanks out another of the pokers). Angel is working the stake on the floor with his feet, trying to pick it up.

As Marcus strolls back to the table arrayed with his assortment of torture tools, Angel manages to get the stake between his feet.
Marcus asks what Angel wantsAngel admits he wants forgiveness
Marcus approaches Angel again, still wanting to know what it is Angel wants. He tells him he wants the truth and assures him if it's not, he'll know. Angel tells him he wants to be forgiven.

Marcus acknowledges that is the truth, he admires the fact that Angel wants to earn it, not have it handed to him. He promises Angel that in the end, nothing will matter, there will be only the darkness and he'll finally be free.
Spike interrupts Angel's attempt to stake Marcus
Angel makes a promise to Marcus to kill him, as he swings his legs upward, the stake positioned between them, directed at Marcus' chest. Angel's legs are blocked by Spike before he can get to Marcus with the stake.
Spike steps in
Angel's attack leaves Marcus angry. He responds by striking Angel, hard. He is stopped by Spike who reminds him they still need to get the ring. Spike grabs a torture tool and offers Marcus his assistance with the task at hand.

Cordy, Doyle, look for the ringDoyle suggests there's another place to search
Doyle and Cordelia are tearing up Angel's apartment, looking for the ring. Cordy laments the fact they've looked everywhere, it's not to be found.

Doyle suggest there is one more place they haven't looked yet.

Cordy realizes he's referring to the sewer tunnels.

Doyle, Cordy search the sewer
Cordelia and Doyle continue their search, each with flashlight in hand, in the tunnels. Cordy is sure they'll never be able to find something so small in a potential search area so large. She goes on ahead of Doyle.
Doyle gets in touch with his demon side
As Cordelia gets out of sight, Doyle morphs into his demon self, bluish green spikes protruding from his face, and sniffs the air. He disappears and ends up at the spot of the loose brick, where Angel had hidden the ring earlier.
Doyle shows Cordy his discovery
Doyle yells to Cordy that he's found it. She wants to know how that happened. He attributes it to "luck". Cordelia reckons they can now save Angel.

Doyle points out that if they give Spike what he wants, he'll likely kill them all.

Cordelia agrees and realizes they need a plan.

Doyle, Cordy, meet up with SpikeCordy demands Spike take them to Angel
Cordelia and Doyle meet Spike in an alley behind a fishery, where he' s standing partially concealed in the shadows. Spike wants to know where the ring is. He's told they have it but they didn't bring it with them. Spike isn't pleased by this turn of events. He reminds them that Angel's time is running out, he wants the ring now.

Cordy tells Spike to take them to Angel.

Doyle adds that once they verify that Angel is all right, they'll give Spike the ring.

Spike reluctantly agrees.

Angel
Angel is hanging by his manacled wrists, still chained to the ceiling, barely able to stand. Spike enters the warehouse with Doyle and Cordelia. Angel looks up and acknowledges them.
Spike stops Doyle and Cordy from going to Angel
Cordy and Doyle start to run to Angel but are stopped by Spike who positions himself between Angel and the others. He reminds them the deal was they'd get Angel when he got the ring, he demands they give it to him now.
Doyle presents the ring
Doyle removes the ring from his pocket and hurls it across the warehouse. He suggests Spike go get it.
Cordy informs Spike they're leaving
Cordelia tells him now that he has the ring and they have Angel, they're going to leave.

Spike makes it clear it is not his intention to let them go.

Cordy and Doyle let him know they figured that and planned for it.
Spike eyes the ring
As Spike reaches for the ring, Oz's van comes bursting through the warehouse wall, coming to a stop inside, just behind Angel. Spike makes a quick move rolling out of the way, barely avoiding getting run over.
Oz, well armed
Oz grabs a crossbow with each hand and sticks them out the driver's side window covering Doyle and Cordelia while they free Angel from his shackles and help him into the van.

As the van retreats from the warehouse, Spike frantically surveys the area, looking for the ring. He realizes it's gone.
Marcus
Marcus steps out of the shadows and into the bright sunlight. He pauses a moment and smiles, bathed in the rays of the midday sun.
Spike gets too close to the sunshine
Spike is still in the warehouse, pitching a fit over the loss of the ring. As he's railing against his misfortune, he accidentally steps into one of the narrow shafts of sunlight caused by one of the bullet holes Marcus had created earlier.

The shaft of light hits Spike in the back of the head, igniting his hair. He smothers the flames with his hands and expresses his hope that Marcus and Angel kill each other.

Marcus is at the beach, strolling the crowded pier.

Doyle, Angel, Cordy in Oz's van
Angel is laying in the back of Oz's van, in obvious pain, one of the pokers still stuck in his side. Cordelia and Doyle are on either side of him, looking concerned. Oz looks back from the driver's seat and asks if Angel is okay.
Oz offers to do what he can
Cordelia thinks they need to take Angel to a hospital. Oz observes that most hospitals aren't equipped to take care of non-humans. Doyle agrees that it's too risky and asks Oz if he knows any first aid. Oz offers he knows a little basic stuff, he'll do what he can if he can find a shaded place to pull the van into to do something.
Angel tells Oz to turn around
Angel tells Oz to turn the van around. Cordelia tells Oz to ignore him. Angel again demands that Oz turn the van around. Cordelia wants to know what Angel thinks he can do considering it's the middle of the day and he has no ring to protect him from the sun.
Doyle doesn't like the plan
Doyle agrees, telling Angel he's in no condition to take Marcus on.
Angel rips out the poker and tells Oz to go back
Angel rips the poker out of his side and tells the others that Marcus has a fondness for kids. He doesn't think Marcus could have gotten too far from the warehouse on foot and tells Oz again to turn around.

This time he complies, spinning the van 180 degrees and heading back in the direction from which they came.

Marcus notices a group of children
Marcus is on the pier, paying special attention to a group of kids there on an outing. He greets the children just as Oz drives the van onto the pier and runs into Marcus, sending him reeling.
Oz takes a shot
Cordelia jumps out of the van and urges the children to run.

Oz shoots Marcus with an arrow from the crossbow. Marcus, unfazed by the arrow sticking out of his chest, simply removes it and tosses it aside.

Doyle, seeing the arrow was useless, rushes Marcus but is knocked down easily.
Angel tells Oz he's sure
At the van, Oz asks Angel if he's sure. Angel replies he is.
Angel and Marcus crash through the pier railing
Oz opens the door and Angel charges at Marcus as Angel's body ignites into flames from the sun. He tackles Marcus and they both smash through the railing and plunge into the ocean below.

Cordelia, Doyle and Oz look over the railing, searching for Angel, but see nothing.

Angel and Marcus fightMarcus taunts Angel
Under the pier, Angel and Marcus rise out of the shallows of the water and fight. They seem fairly equal, each giving and taking in the battle.

Marcus taunts Angel's attempts to finish him. He is, after all, wearing the ring that makes him unkillable.
Angel, after impaling Angel removes the ring from Marcus' fingerMarcus is dust
Angel slams Marcus against one of the pier's supports, running him through with a loose board on the support. Marcus looks down at the board sticking through his chest and smiles.

Angel removes the ring from Marcus' hand, he's dust.

Angel enjoys a moment in the sun
Angel puts on the ring and cautiously walks out from the shade under the pier into the sun. He looks around, blinking from the intensity of the light
Cordy, Oz, Doyle and Angel
Cordelia, Oz and Doyle are there to meet him. Cordy asks if he's okay, he tells her he's fine and thanks Oz for his help.
Angel takes a bit more time in the sun
Cordy suggests they go home so he can rest. Angel doesn't seem to be listening to her. Doyle suggests that Cordy give him some space.

Angel walks a short distance down the beach alone, drinking in the sights around him in amazement.

Angel watches the sunset
Angel and Doyle are on a rooftop, Angel sitting on the ledge appreciating the sunset. Doyle asks how long it's been since he's seen one. Angel answers it's been over 200 years.
Doyle figures Angel should be happy now
Doyle thinks Angel should be feeling pretty good about things now, that the ring changes everything, there will be many more sunsets for Angel to savor.
Doyle, Angel
Angel says there won't be anymore sunsets for him, he's not going to wear the ring.

Doyle thinks he's out of his mind to turn his back on his "redemption".

Angel doesn't believe the ring is his redemption. He has too much to atone for, this is too easy.

Doyle thinks he should consider all the daytime people he could assist.
Angel doesn't want to take the easy way
Angel notes that those people have help, it's the ones who are weak, that are preyed upon by the creatures of the dark who need him. The people that go unseen by those who live in the day. He's afraid that if he becomes one of them, he'll stop seeing those people as well.
Angel smashes the ring
As the sun sets, Angel removes the ring and shatters it with a rock as Doyle looks on. A bright green glow emanates from it, then disappears.
Doyle mentions Rachel called
Doyle tells him that Rachel called and said to say thanks, she found her way, and that Angel would understand.
Angel figures he had a pretty good day
Angel smiles slightly and tells Doyle he had a pretty good day, aside from the part where he was "nearly tortured to death". Doyle observes that he didn't break under the torture.

As they walk to the doorway to the inside stairwell, Angel jokingly tells Doyle that he nearly broke, and would have given up everything with one more poker, including Doyle's mother.
