Cordy gets attacked
As Cordelia is describing the scene, we see a well dressed Cordy walking through a dangerous looking neighborhood at night. She is suddenly confronted by a rough looking fellow intent on stealing her purse as he wields a knife. She looks around and shouts for help.
a figure in the shadows
A figure wearing a long, flowing coat is standing in the shadows. He responds to her plea by rushing in and beating the would be purse snatcher.
the "Dark Avenger"
Angel turns to the camera and woodenly says, "You can count on me because I'm the Dark Avenger."
Cordy with the camera
Cordy is in Angel's office, in the midst of the lengthy spiel describing her vision of the commercial for Angel Investigations. She's holding a video camera pointed at Angel.
"I'm what?"
Angel is sitting behind his desk, decidedly unimpressed with it all. He skeptically asks, "I'm the what?"
Cordy, undeterred
Cordelia isn't deterred by his lack of enthusiasm. She thinks it would be the perfect way to promote Angel and Angel Investigations. Angel, as expected, is not warm to the idea.
Angel makes an exit
As Cordy continues rambling on about the commercial and what she thinks it could mean to the business, Angel gets up from behind the desk, walks over to the elevator and takes it downstairs to his apartment.

Cordy continues until he's out of sight, saying that just because Buffy visits and makes him permanently depressed ("I Will Remember You") doesn't mean that she can stand by and watch the business go under.
Doyle thinks Angel may be right
Doyle comes in and notes Angel has a point. It may not be wise to advertise a savior who can't go into the sunlight, that could raise vampire questions. He also reminds her it could bring up questions about the fact he doesn't have a private investigator's license.
Cordy has an idea
Cordelia doesn't see why it should matter that he has no license, since they have no clients. She's determined that they have to project the right image to get people in. She decides that Angel is too extraordinary for ordinary folks to relate to and hits upon the idea to have Doyle be the front man for the ad instead. He's average, after all, she thinks he's perfect.
Cordy tries to convince Doyle
Doyle isn't interested but Cordy is relentless. She grabs him by the shirt and tells him she's not asking, she's telling. Angel is in a mood and they both know the only time he's happy is when he's battling evil things. Hence, they need some evil things for him to fight and that means bringing in some business.

Doyle working on the ad
Cordy and Doyle are working on the commercial. Doyle is reciting the lines in a rather stilted way. When he completes the spiel, he asks, "Is that it? Am I done?"
Cordy gets frustrated
Cordelia tells him she's not getting Joe Average from him, she's getting "weasel" and that's not what she's going for. Doyle offers to try again. Cordy declines the offer, taking down the cue cards.
Doyle, not liking the 'weasel' remark
Doyle is a little hurt about the "weasel" crack.

Cordy tries to assure him she didn't mean it the way it came out. She's just frustrated with Angel sequestered in his apartment brooding and no paying clients coming into the office. She doesn't understand how someone who's not even alive can be so hurt.
Doyle offers to speak with Angel
Doyle offers that seeing Buffy again obviously cut him deeply and tells Cordelia he'll talk to Angel.

Cordy isn't really listening, she's onto another harebrained idea. She thinks getting Angel a costume would be good.

Doyle expression is incredulous.
Cordy has an ideaDoyle would rather not think about it
Cordy thinks a cape and some tights would be perfect and would also get them some much needed exposure.

Doyle can't really picture it. After a brief moment, he admits now he can and it's not something he wants to think about.

Angel works out some issues
Angel is in his apartment, working out his frustrations on a punching bag. Doyle enters, Angel asks what he wants.
Doyle notes Angel's mood
Doyle tells him that Cordy isn't quite upset enough to break down and cry in his arms, but if Angel keeps up the depressed and broody routine, he thinks he might get lucky in that regard.
Angel keeps up the workout
Angel continues battering the punching bag and tells Doyle he needs time to deal with things.

Doyle says he understands, he remembers when his ex, Harry, visited. It was brief, but it upset him for days ("The Bachelor Party").
Angel spills about Buffy's visit
Angel stops beating up the punching bag and tells Doyle that Buffy's visit was more than brief. He sits on the couch and tells Doyle she was there for 24 hours ("I Will Remember You").

Doyle, having no memory of the day that was taken back by the Oracles, thinks Angel has been drinking.

Angel asks Doyle exactly who the Oracles are and why Doyle hasn't told him about them before.
Doyle wonders how Angel knows about The Oracles
Doyle is surprised to hear him mention the Oracles and wants to know who told him about them.
Angel fills Doyle in
Angel tells him that the first time the Mohra demon attacked, it escaped. He explains that he followed it, killed it, and that's when some of its blood mixed with his and made him human. He says that's when Doyle took him to see the Oracles.

Doyle insists he would have remembered doing that, it's not something one does every day.

Angel tells him that the Oracles informed him he was free from his duty, that he and Buffy spent the time together until they recognized they couldn't be. He says they understood that their lives are not their own, they belong in the world fighting the good fight against evil. He says he went back to the Oracles and asked them to take back the day so it never happened.
Doyle is surprised Angel gave Buffy up
Doyle is still trying to grasp what Angel is telling him. He is shocked that Angel had everything he's ever wanted, Buffy and his mortality, and gave it up. Doyle suggests it proves that Angel is a true hero. He is certain that he would have chosen to keep what had been given, he doesn't think he'd have the strength to give it back.

Angel tells him that one never knows what they are capable of until they are put to the test.

Doyle is impressed that Angel pretty much lived a lifetime in one 24 hour period while he's still trying to ask Cordelia on a date. He thinks he'd probably better tell her about the half demon thing before asking her out.
Angel tells Doyle what the Oracles said
Angel tells him the Oracles said something bad is on its way, armies of evil bringing the "End of Days" kind of bad. He feels something is coming, he doesn't know what it is, but he knows it involves them in some way.

Doyle thinks someone else should have to do the fighting for a change. He thinks it's unfair that Angel not only has to save all the helpless but is expected to fight the apocalypse too.
It's about fighting the good fight ...Doyle prefers the role of scorekeeper
Angel says it's one and the same, fighting the good fight however you can.

Doyle prefers the role of scorekeeper.

Doyle spills about the lost day
Doyle and Cordelia are sitting on the steps in the lobby. Doyle has told Cordy about the missing day and what had happened.
Cordy doesn't like secrets
Cordy thinks Angel should have made good use of that day by checking out the lottery numbers or the stock report before the day was turned back. She thinks Angel should have told her, she doesn't want secrets between any of them.

Doyle agrees that secrets shouldn't exist. He says his marriage with Harry ("The Bachelor Party") would have been stronger if there had been better communication between them.

Cordy asks how Harry is doing.
Doyle, remembering Harry
Doyle replies that Harry has decided to remain in LA so he'll be seeing her off and on, but not right away. He feels they both need to establish their own lives first. He believes if he wants a lasting relationship, he needs to be honest about some things.
Cordy wonders what Doyle is trying to say
Cordelia wonders what he's referring to.
Doyle has a vision
Doyle starts to tell her about his demon side, but before he gets into it he's struck with the pain of a vision.

The vision shows a brick building with people inside, crowded together.

a young girl makes an escapethe girl gets some help
A young demon girl is running down the street, carrying a box. The sound of many heavy, synchronized footsteps echoes in the air. The girl drops the box, spilling the items inside. She stops and frantically recovers the contents.

A demon boy grabs her and clamps his hand over her mouth. He removes it when she agrees to keep quiet and leads her down a flight of stairs to a hiding place. They watch as a multitude of military style boots jog by them.

Angel, Doyle search the building
Angel and Doyle are searching the deserted building Doyle saw in his vision. Doyle notes how rundown the place is. Angel figures that makes it a perfect hiding place.

They enter one of the rooms where they find food still sitting on a table, as if the occupants had departed in a hurry.
Angel senses fear
Angel tells Doyle he smells something and it's not the food, it's fear.
Doyle, Angel peer into the space
They open a trap door in the floor and find a group of demons cowering together in the small, dark space beneath it.

Angel reassures them he and Doyle are there to help them, not hurt them.

the demon explains the predicamentAngel, Doyle hear the story
Angel and Doyle are sitting in the room with the demons. One of the demons tells Angel that they gave all of their money to a ship's captain for safe passage out of the country, but he took their money and disappeared. Their destination was to be a small island off the coast of Ecuador, where others of their kind had found a safe haven, but the ship never arrived to pick them up.

Angel wants to know what they're running from.
Reiff returns
The two demon youngsters come into the room. The boy says that they were nearly caught, they lost some of the supplies they were bringing back.

One of the demon's addresses the boy as "Reiff" and tells him the "promised one" is present, referring to Angel. Reiff is unimpressed.
Angel, confused by the "Chosen one" thing
Angel tells the demons there's been some kind of misunderstanding.
detailing the prophecy
The demon who introduced him as such says that he doesn't believe they are wrong. Their prophecies foretell of a savior who will arrive just before the end of the century to rescue them from the "Scourge".

Angel isn't familiar with the Scourge and says as much.
Reiff, not impressed
Reiff is even less impressed with the "promised one" now since he doesn't even know what it is he is supposed to rescue them from. Reiff is sure the Scourge will come and kill them all. He departs in a huff.
Doyle, lost in thought
Doyle has moved off and is standing by the window, staring outward.
Angel reckons they have to solve the problem
Angel approaches him and tells him they need to handle this since the demons are under the impression he's some kind of savior.

Doyle says he knows about the Scourge. They're death.

As Doyle relates the story to Angel ....
Doyle, armed with a bat
Flashback to a younger Doyle, entering his apartment. He senses he's not alone, grabs a baseball bat and turns to find someone there waiting for him in the shadows. Doyle demands to know who's there.
Lucas steps out of the shadows
The figure in the shadows steps into the light, revealing a face that looks like Doyle's when he morphs into his demon half. He tells Doyle his name is Lucas, he's sort of a relative. He says he's a Brachen demon, the same species as Doyle's father. He had been living with his clan in Oregon until the Scourge came and killed most of them. He says the Scourge know where they are, they will come for them.

Doyle demands to know what the Scourge is.

Back to present as Doyle continues his explanation to Angel ...
Doyle continues the tale
He tells Angel that the Scourge is an army of demons, pure of blood, who loathe any demon that isn't pure, such as himself. They hunt down those that are impure and kill them.
Angel has a question
Angel wonders why no one has ever fought back.

Doyle assures him they have, but killing them doesn't stop them, they are dedicated to what they do. He notes it's impossible to fight fanatics.

Flashback to Doyle's past as he continues his story ...
Lucas wants help
Lucas tells Doyle he doesn't expect him to fight the Scourge, he just wants Doyle to help him and the others like him, hide until they can safely get out of town.
Doyle isn't offering
Doyle refuses, citing the fact that anyone who helps those the Scourge are after will be targeted as well. He prefers to keep a low profile.

Lucas pleads with Doyle for help, citing their similar backgrounds as Brachen demons and the fact that the Scourge is a common enemy for all demons like themselves who aren't "pure".

Doyle remains silent.

Lucas departs, realizing his pleadings are falling on deaf ears.

Back to Angel and Doyle in the present ...
DoyleAngel
Doyle says he panicked. He'd just found out that he was half demon and wasn't able to deal with that, let alone taking on the responsibility of saving a bunch of strangers.

Angel wants Doyle to finish the story.

Flashback to Doyle's past ...
Doyle, restlessDoyle has a vision
Doyle is lying on his bed, fully clothed, tossing and turning. He gets up and lights a cigarette. There's a knocking at the door.

Doyle gets up and heads for the door when he's overtaken by a vision of Lucas and the other Brachens being slaughtered. He hears Lucas' voice telling him they share a common enemy.

Doyle, Angel
Back to Angel and Doyle in the present ...

Doyle tells Angel he had no idea what the visions meant, that was the first time he'd ever had them. He didn't know if they were real or a dream, but he was determined to find out.

Flashback to Doyle's past ...
Doyle examines what he's foundLucas
Doyle arrives at the building where Lucas and the others were hiding. flashlight in hand. He searches a room and finds the remains of a violent encounter. There are many Brachen demons, including children, dead.

He finds Lucas' body among the corpses.

Back to Angel and Doyle in the present ...
Doyle
Doyle says the vision was a reality.
Angel tries to offer reassurance
Angel tries to reassure him, telling him there is no way he could have known what would happen.

Doyle figures the demons they're looking to help here are going to need more than their prophesied Chosen One, more like an army. He says the Scourge cannot be fought.

Angel responds that they won't have to fight because they're going to get the demons to a safe place, far away from the Scourge.

Cordy, armed with breath spray
Cordelia enters the building and walks down the hallway, looking for Angel. She sees one of the demons step into the hall and pulls a bottle of breath freshener out of her purse, spraying it in the demon's general direction, claiming it's "demon repellent."
the demon, not impressed
The demon recognizes the scent and knows it's breath spray.
Doyle fills Cordy in
Doyle joins her and tells her these are the people they're there to help. He tells Cordy that Angel has gone to get the paperwork to get the refugees out of the country. He wants to know if Cordy brought the truck.

Cordy confirms that she did and wonders if Doyle has noticed that the 'people' they're helping are demons. She looks around at the demons watching them, then pulls Doyle into one of the rooms to talk privately.
Doyle
Doyle notes he recognized the obvious, and just because they're demons doesn't mean they're evil. He tells her Angel wants her at the pier, then gives her the directions to get to the ship, the "Quintessa". He says Angel knows the captain. The ship is a freighter, the captain owes Angel, if he completes this task Angel will consider them even.
Cordy agrees
Cordelia argues for a bit then agrees to do what's been asked of her.

Doyle wants her to let him know as soon as she has the arrangements made.

the harbor master
Angel is setting up the arrangements with a less than enthusiastic harbor master, who is afraid of bringing trouble down on himself if he does what Angel wants.
Angel suggests cooperation
Angel assures him he'll have even more trouble if he doesn't.

The harbor master says he's been looking the other way on shipments his brother is involved with because he's "family", not for money, he's not so sure about this deal.

Angel tells him there will be no remuneration for his cooperation.

The harbor master likens the deal to blackmail.
Angel wonders if the guy knows what he is
Angel asks if the guy's brother told him about Angel, what he is.
recalling Angel had a snack
The harbor master responds that his brother told him Angel had bitten him.

Angel denies that, noting matter-of-factly, he wasn't hungry.

The harbor master begins to see the wiser decision here is to do what Angel wants.
Angel lets the guy know he's on the menu
Angel wants documents certifying the ship is carrying a load of hazardous waste so nobody will be too interested in getting close to it. He wants no impediments to the ship getting out to sea. He lets the guy know that if things don't go as he expects them to, he'll be back, and he'll be looking for an appetizer.

the demon tells Doyle Reiff is missing
Back at the abandoned building, one of the adult demons has noticed that Reiff is missing. He tells Doyle he's gone, it's common practice for the kid, he thinks he'll be back.
the demon girl
The girl demon says Reiff is not coming back. He didn't believe Angel was going to help them, he left to keep from getting killed with the rest of them. The girl is afraid that's exactly what will happen.
Doyle hands off the cell phone with instructions
Doyle assures her they're going to be okay. He gives his cell phone to the demon and tells him when Cordy calls, they all need to leave the building and get to the ship immediately. He'll find Reiff and bring him to them.

Doyle asks the girl if she knows where Reiff was headed.

Doyle finds Reiff
Doyle finds Reiff and tells him they have a way to get him and his people to safety, on a ship.

Reiff is unimpressed and wishes them good luck, but he's not coming.

Doyle admits he can't force him to join them, the choice of what to do is indeed his.
Reiff doesn't like the optionsDoyle suggests joining the others
Reiff isn't too keen on the options available. He can stay and be feared and hated by humans because he's different or he can be despised and hunted by pureblooded demons who want him dead. He doesn't see much in the way of choice here. Reiff senses the Scourge will soon show up. He thinks the others are foolish for trusting in Angel as the "promised one" when he knows it isn't true.

Doyle points out that at least they have faith in something which is better than ignoring the evil and hoping it will disappear. He suggests they join Reiff's family.

the "Quintessa"
Cordy is looking over the interior of an old cargo ship, unimpressed by the conditions.

The Captain's mate suggests they could bring in blankets, something to make things a little more comfortable for the passengers. The Captain wants to know how many passengers he'll be carrying..
Cordy makes the deal
Cordy tells him around 20.

He acknowledges the accommodations aren't the most luxurious but assures her the ship will get them to their destination.

Cordelia agrees, it will suit their purposes.

Doyle hears footsteps
Doyle and Reiff are walking together. The sound of synchronized heavy footsteps fills the air. They take off running down the street, the Scourge not far behind them.
Doyle, Reiff keep an eye on the Scourge
Doyle and Reiff enter an old building and hide, watching the soldiers from the window as they search the area. One of the soldiers commands the others to destroy everything. They respond by trashing and burning everything in sight.
the Scourge, doing the burn and pillage thing
One of the soldiers heads for the building where Doyle and Reiff are hiding.
Doyle makes a run for it
Doyle tells Reiff to stay put, no matter what. He morphs into his demon face and runs out of the building, knocking down the soldier in the process. The Scourge are in hot pursuit.

Someone reaches out from another building and pulls Doyle inside as he's running by. It's Angel.

checking out the empty hiding place
The Scourge soldiers enter the abandoned building where the demons had been hiding. The Commander finds the trap door in the floor. A soldier pulls it open, revealing the empty space beneath. The Commander orders the soldiers to continue searching.
Angel, Doyle
Angel enters the room in vamp face. He pulls Doyle in with him and asks if this is what the soldiers are looking for. Some of the soldiers rush toward him. He warns them off, telling them Doyle is his "kill."

The Commander skeptically notes that vampires don't drink from demons.

Angel responds with offense that anyone would think he'd actually feed from something so inferior.
the Commander
The Commander points out that Angel is hardly in a position to make judgments, considering that vampires (in his view) are at the bottom of the half-breed barrel.
Angel, playing the role
Angel plays along with it, saying he knows this, he's eternally plagued by the humanity within himself.

Doyle begs for his life.

Angel tells Doyle to "shut up" and snaps Doyle's neck. Doyle drops to the floor.

Angel tells the Commander he wants to join them. He assures them he can kill those who are impure much more efficiently than any of the soldiers can because he knows how they think. He believes he can be a valuable asset to their cause.
the Commnader thinks Angel may be usefulAngel gets dragged out
The Commander thinks perhaps Angel can prove useful.

The soldiers grab Angel and drag him out of the building.

Reiff watches from his hiding place as the Scourge depart the building. They are hustling Angel along with them.
Reiff finds DoyleDoyle makes an adjustment
Reiff enters the building and finds Doyle's body on the floor. He is startled as Doyle's eyes suddenly flutter open. Doyle moans and positions his neck back into place, noting it' s not his favorite thing.

Reiff wants to know where everyone is.

Doyle hopes they are where they are supposed to be.

the Captain, in a hurryCordy requests more time
As Cordy assists the demon boarding the cargo ship, the captain tells Cordy they have to stay on schedule, they need to go. Cordelia asks for a little more time.

One of the demons tells Cordy how grateful he is to Cordelia and her friends for helping and that he's sure Reiff is in good hands.

Cordelia reassures him that Doyle will find Reiff and get him to the ship.
Cordy reacts to the revelationmentioning Doyle's heritage
The demon is confident of that as well, knowing that Doyle understands what they've been through, since he is half demon himself.

This revelation comes as quite a surprise to Cordelia.

Angel listens
The Scourge are meeting, Angel is with them. He is dressed in the same uniform as the others, his face in its vampire form.
working up the troops
The Commander is addressing the troops. He tells them it is their duty to destroy the half-breeds, those who are impure and who continue to spread that impurity by cross breeding. They are dedicated to the fight until there are no impure demons left. It is their calling. He tells the gathering that this night will see them take a huge step toward their goal. They will kill the demons that have so far eluded them and they now know where to find them.
the mate is brought forward
One of the soldiers brings forward the Captain's mate from the ship that is to take the demons out of harm's way. The Commander tells the soldiers that the man came to them for money, but he is a friend to their cause. He is invited to see the "power of the beacon" first hand.
Angel watches nervously
A couple of soldiers open a door and roll out a large light, positioned in a metal frame. They engage some switches. The light begins to power up.
the beacon powers up
The Commander tells those gathered that the Lister demons, along with anything with human blood, will die as soon as the light touches them. He further explains that when the light reaches it's full power, it will extend for a 1/4 mile radius.
the mate disintegrates
He demonstrates the effect on the Captain's mate. As the light touches him, he disintegrates.
Angel watches the mate die
The Commander tells his soldiers to deliver the weapon.

As they leave the building, Angel peels off from the rest. He takes down one of the soldiers and rides off on its motorcycle.

Cordy waits for DoyleDoyle, Reiff rush on board
Aboard the cargo ship, Cordelia is anxiously waiting for Doyle. He finally arrives, with Reiff in tow. Cordelia greets Doyle with enthusiastic relief that he's okay. She tells him she was worried, then she slaps him. Doyle wants to know why. Cordy tells him it's for not telling her about his demon half.

Doyle says it's not that he didn't want to tell her, but he was afraid if he did she'd reject him.
Cordy confronts DoyleDoyle explains
Cordy is a bit offended that Doyle would think she was so shallow. She reminds him that her employer is a vampire so why would she consider the fact Doyle is half demon be any big deal. She wants to know if there are any other secrets about him she should know.

He tells her the demon thing is pretty much it.
Angel directs the captain to get the ship moving
Cordy is glad there are no more secrets and asks if Doyle wants to ask her out on a date now. But before Doyle can ask, Angel comes running up the gangway, telling the captain they have to leave now.

Cordelia wants to know what's happening.
Angel directs Doyle and Cordy to get below deck
Doyle notes that the Scourge have arrived.

Angel tells Cordy and Doyle to get below with the others and lock the doors. Doyle starts to argue the point, but Angel forcefully tells him to do it.

In the ship's hold, Doyle tells the others the Scourge have arrived and calls for them to lock the doors. He tries to reassure them they'll be okay.

Angel, ready for the Scourge
Angel awaits the impeding arrival of the Scourge. They pull up a truck, the beacon loaded in the back. As some of the troops load the beacon onto the ship, others rush up the gangway.

The Commander orders them to kill Angel but they don't find that to be an easy task. Angel handles several of them fairly easily.
Angel and the Commander fight
The Commander decides to take matters into his own hands and engages Angel himself.

The two of them fight, crash through a door and fall down a stairway into the hold of the ship. They sail over a railing and land on a lower catwalk as Cordelia and the others look on.
Angel sees the device in the cargo hold
Angel sits up and sees the Scourge weapon being lowered into the cargo hold from a chain above. He sees it's powering up. He yells for everyone to get out.
the Commander tries a choke hold
The demons head for the exit while the Scourge Commander jumps Angel and tries to choke him. Angel breaks the Commander's grip and snaps his neck. He rushes toward the weapon.

Doyle is trying to open a door so those in the hold can escape, only to find all the doors locked, from the outside.
Angel ponders the situationthe weapon, powering up
Doyle and Cordelia ascend a ladder that brings them up to the platform Angel is standing on. Doyle asks Angel what the weapon does.

Angel informs him that anything its light touches that has human blood will die.

Doyle notices the light is getting brighter, and realizes it's near to being fully powered up.

Angel thinks if he can yank the cable, he can shut it down.
Doyle realizes what will happen
Doyle sees it's impossible to do that without getting touched by the deadly light of the weapon.

Cordelia also realizes doing this would be suicide.

Doyle hopes for another way.

Angel looks at the faces of the Lister demons in the hold, then at Cordelia. He says it's okay. He's ready to do what has to be done.
Angel knows what he has to do
Angel puts his hand on Doyle's shoulder.
Doyle makes a decision
Doyle repeats what Angel had told him before, about not knowing what you're capable of until put to the test. He says he understands that now and hits Angel hard, sending him falling over the railing, down into the cargo hold.
a goodbye kiss
Doyle gives Cordelia a kiss, a blue light passes between them just before they part. Doyle stands back, morphs into his demon visage and remarks that it's a shame they won't get the opportunity to see if she could learn to love that face.
Angel climbs back up
Angel gets up from the floor of the hold and starts climbing back up the ladder, all the while shouting for Doyle not to do what he's about to do.

Just as Angel reaches the platform, Doyle jumps over the side and lands on the weapon. He looks back and smiles at Angel and Cordelia. He morphs back into his human face and works to pull the cable apart as the light from the weapon gets ever brighter and starts to burn the skin off of his face.
Doyle disintegratesCordy mourns
Everyone watches, horrified, as Doyle manages to pull the cable connection apart just before he disintegrates. The weapon is disarmed. The light goes out.

Cordy cries as Angel hugs her.

Angel watches the tapeCordy watches the tape
At the office of Angel Investigations, Angel and Cordelia watch a tape of the commercial Doyle had made. As he delivers the sell, the words ring eerily truthful to recent events.

Doyle's last words on the tape, "Is that it? Am I done?"
