"The Prodigal"

Written by: Tim Minear Original Air Date: February 22, 2000

A bright morning in Galway, Ireland 1753
Liam, the servant girl, Anna
A young female servant is getting water from a well in the center of a small courtyard.

A bleary eyed Angel is lurking in the shadows, leaning against the outer wall of the house. He calls to the servant girl, Anna.
Anna
Anna addresses him as Liam (and for the purposes of this summary, Angel as human will be referred to by his human name, Liam).

Liam beckons Anna to come to him, in the shadows.

Anna is concerned that Liam's father may show up.
Liam coaxes Anna to come closer
Liam tells her his father must surely be in church by now and again beckons her to come to him.

Anna questions why he's lurking in the shadows and doesn't seem to want to come out into the light of day.

Liam explains his reluctance to step into the sun, saying his eyes are sensitive to the light.
Liam's father arrives
His father arrives and shoves him into the light of the courtyard. He chastises Liam for being out all night, drinking and whoring, something that seems to occupy much of his time. He thinks his son is an embarrassment.
Liam is unapologetic
Liam picks himself off of the ground and offers no apologies for his behavior. On the contrary, he seems quite pleased that his actions irritate his father.
Liam's father, upset
His father doesn't want him corrupting the morals of the servants. Liam reminds him that there is only one servant and that some forms of corruption can be quite pleasant.
Liam wipes the blood from his lip
His father's reaction to Liam's insolence is to slap him hard across the face. He tells his son he's embarrassed by him, that he's a lazy good for nothing and he always will be.

Liam wipes the blood from his split lip.

Angel battles a demon in the subway
Present day, LA

Angel is fighting with a demon in a subway tunnel. He pauses briefly to wipe blood from his lip.

Kate gets filled in
Kate Lockley and another officer are conversing on the subway platform. The officer fills her in on what he knows of the situation. A homeless guy started trashing the subway car and threatening people so one of them pulled the emergency brake. The suspect got away.

Kate wonders how the suspect managed to escape.
the officer answers Kate's questions
The officer says they don't have the details yet, the stories of the witnesses are a little muddled.
Kate heads down the subway tunnel
Kate wants to know how so.

The officer tells her that the witnesses claim the suspect was pulled out of the moving subway car.

Lockley wants to know what pulled the suspect out. She heads down the platform into the tunnel.

Angel finishes the demonKate gets the facts
Angel and the demon are still fighting. He finally manages to kill it just before Kate arrives.

She looks at the dead demon and remarks that Miranda doesn't seem to be necessary. She confirms that the deceased is indeed non-human and is enlightened to learn that demons can actually die. She apologizes for being a bit dense, explaining that she's not down with all the "other worldly" stuff.
the dead demon
Angel begins to explain that demons aren't "other worldly" exactly, but Kate isn't interested in listening. She walks away.

Angel follows her out.

Kate wonders who'll clean up the mess
Kate asks Angel who she should talk to about disposing of the dead demon.

Angel says he'll take care of it.

She wonders how she's going to write this incident up.
Angel offers a suggestion
Angel suggests she handle it the way she's handled similar situations.

Kate notes these aren't exactly routine kinds of cases.

Angel tells her they're more common than she thinks, she probably just didn't realize it before now, people see things the way they need to so they can understand them.
Delivery guy makes his statement
An officer is taking a statement from a delivery man about the subway incident. The delivery guy has nothing to offer, just a fairly generic description of a homeless person who smelled bad.
Kate sees what she can find out
Kate approaches the officer who hands her the pad on which he's been taking notes. He tells her this is all they've got.

Lockley reads the generic description and asks the witness if he can't offer anything more specific. She wants to know why he pulled the emergency brake.
the witness has little to add
The witness says that the guy came straight at him, he doesn't know why. He pulled the emergency brake because he figured it was an emergency.

Kate hands the notepad back to the officer and tells him to circulate the description.

Delivery guy wants to know if he's free to leave.
Angel asks Kate about her father
Kate tells him he can go.

Angel notices Trevor Lockley talking to an officer. He asks Kate why her father is there.
Kate approaches Trevor
Kate approaches Trevor and asks him why he's there.

Trevor tells her he happened to be in the area.

Kate assumes he heard the call on the scanner in his apartment.
Trevor goes along with Kate's assumption
Trevor doesn't deny her assumption.

Kate thinks that Trevor heard she was the lead investigator and is checking up on her work.

Trevor goes along with that. He tells her he'll leave her to her job and departs.
Angel wonders what's up
Angel moves to stand next to Kate. He wonders what's going on with Trevor.

Kate tells him that her dad was just checking up on her.

Angel wonders why that fact seems to surprise her.
Kate gets snippyAngel gets confused
Kate goes into bitch mode and tells him he has no right to kill a demon in front of her and then act like they're buddies, about to share a coffee break.

Angel seems confused by her hostility and wonders what's going on between them.

Kate offers no offense, but she's bothered by what he is and wants to keep their relationship strictly business.

Galway, Ireland 1753
Darla watchesthe barmaid fills Darla in
Liam is involved in a fight in the local pub, Darla watches. She's very taken with Liam and asks the barmaid next to her who he is.

The barmaid offers little in the way of assistance other than to tell her Liam is a user, a man who makes all kinds of promises in the darkness of night but forgets them come the light of day.
Liam smiles at Darla, before getting smashed with the bottle
Darla smiles. She doesn't see this as a problem.

Liam smiles and starts to head toward Darla when he's detained by a bottle being smashed over his head.

Present day, Angel's office
Cordy explains the alarm systemAngel, trying to focus on Cordy's babbling
Cordelia is explaining to Angel about the new alarm system that's just been installed in the office. She's pondering what they should choose for an access code. She not so subtly suggests that her birthdate would be perfect.

Angel reminds her that he doesn't know when her birthdate is.

Cordy thinks this is the perfect opportunity for him to learn.
Wes has found somethingthe Kwaini illustration
Wes enters the office, carrying a couple of open books. He shows Angel a drawing in one of the books and wonders if it's the demon Angel saw.

Angel confirms that it is.

Wesley identifies it as a "Kwaini", which are all female and entirely peaceful.

Angel notes the one that fought with him was anything but peaceful, and it was very strong.
Wes is sure the demons are peaceful
Wes remains steadfast in his assertion that Kwaini's are peaceful demons and don't even possess the kind of fighting ability Angel had encountered.
Angel reckons there's a reason
Angel thinks there's some reason this normally peaceful demon wasn't. He wonders what would prompt such uncharacteristic behavior.

Wes offers that perhaps it was something on the subway train that prompted the violent attack.

Angel arrives
Angel approaches Kate in one of the police station's briefing rooms where she's doing some filing. He wants to talk about the demon in the subway tunnel.
Kate shuts the door and the blinds
Kate freaks, shuts the door behind him and closes the blinds. She'd prefer he not use the word "demon", it makes her nervous. She wonders what he needs to talk about, she thought he was going to see to it the corpse was taken care of.
Angel has some questions
Angel tells her it is being tended to but he's confused about exactly what happened and why since that type of demon isn't known for being aggressive or violent.
Kate, not being helpful
As Kate returns to her filing, she questions whether there is such a thing as nonviolent demons and wonders how Angel got into the station in the middle of the day.
Angel
Angel reminds her about the sewer tunnel access to the station and assures her that not all demons are malevolent. He wants the names of the train's occupants, he thinks there was a reason the demon went after that particular subway train. Angel believes it was trying to get to something, or someone, specifically.
Kate says they checked things out
Kate says they checked out the passengers and the train, nothing suspicious came up.

Angel insists there is more to it and he wants to look into it further, starting with the delivery guy who pulled the emergency brake.
Angel thinks there's more going on
Kate only wants to know that the demon remains dead.

Angel assures her it is.

She considers the matter closed then and doesn't see any reason to delve into it any further.

Angel makes a call to Wes
Angel phones Wesley from his car, where he's staking out the delivery guy. He's concerned that Lockley seems to choose to be blind to the truth and that may lead her to trouble.
Wes, on the phone with Angel
Wesley thinks she'll come around once she gets used to the whole idea of demons being a reality.
Cordy takes a hacksaw to the demon corpse
Wesley walks down toward the subway tunnel where Cordelia has just announced she's found the Kwaini corpse as she begins hacking away at it with a saw.

Angel mentions to Wesley that he finds it odd that the delivery guy who should be driving a truck during his shift was on the subway train. He wonders why.
Angel gives Wes final instructions
Wesley agrees that's curious and lets Angel know they've found the demon's body.

Angel asks him to run some tests on it and tells him he'll meet them back at the office.

The delivery guy takes a call on his cell phone, gets into his van and leaves.

Angel tails him in his car.
making a deliveryAngel watches
Delivery guy enters an apartment building and knocks on a door that's answered by Trevor Lockley.

Lockley hands the guy a package which he puts in his delivery pouch.

Delivery guy departs as Angel watches the entire transaction from the shadows.

Trevor answers the doorAngel pays a visit
Trevor is enjoying a cup of tea in his apartment when he responds to a knock on the door. He opens the door to find Angel standing on the other side.

Angel introduces himself, reminding Lockley that they had met at this retirement party, that he is a friend of Kate's.
Trevor wonders if Kate is with Angel
Lockley wonders if Kate is with Angel.
Angel reveals what he knows
Angel tells him she doesn't know he's there. He lets Lockley know that he saw the delivery guy at the apartment and figures Kate would be interested in that fact as well.

Trevor wants to know why Angel is there.
Angel wants to know what was in the pkg.
Angel tells him he's interested in what was in the package that he gave to the delivery guy.

Trevor denies knowledge of any package.

Angel lets him know that he's aware Trevor took something from the subway crime scene to keep the police from finding it.

Trevor tries to shut the door in Angel's face.

Angel wants to know who he is working for and assures him he will find out because he intends to protect Kate from finding out that her father wasn't at the crime scene out of concern for her.
Trevor doesn't like the intrusion
Lockley isn't keen on Angel's interference and tells him so. He wonders if Angel knows what being a father is about.
Angel
Angel says he has no children.

Trevor reckons that means he can never understand a father's feelings or what his motivations are for what he does. He shuts the door in Angel's face.

Present day, LA
Trevor, KateTrevor asks if Kate is still seeing Angel
Trevor has invited Kate to join him for a hot dog under the guise of spending some time with his daughter. In reality, he's only interested in getting information about Angel. He asks Kate if she and Angel are still together.

She tells him they never were, he's not really her type.

Wes checks out the demon guts
At Angel's apartment, Wesley is examining some demon entrails on a tray. He tells Angel the demon was definitely a Kwaini and that his tests have discovered something that may indicate why it exhibited unexpectedly violent behavior.
Wes, Angel examine the body part
Wesley holds up a large piece of demon innards, telling Angel that the organ should normally be considerably smaller.

Angel wonders what happened to cause the malformation.
Wes shows Angel the liquid
Wes offers he may know what's responsible, as he holds up a vial of golden liquid. The demon's body was full of the stuff. He isn't sure what the substance is, exactly, but he knows it's not naturally occurring. It has properties similar to powerful hallucinogenics available on the street.

As Wes moves over to the sink to wash his hands, Angel examines the vial, noting the fact the demon was basically doing drugs probably accounts for its violent behavior. He reckons it's likely the drug was in the possession of the delivery guy on the subway train, which is why the demon attacked it.
Wes reckons Angel is right
Wes agrees that pretty much sums it up. The Kwaini was desperate for a fix and prepared to do what it had to in order to get one.
Angel ponders what would happen in the wrong hands
Considering what the drug did to a normally gentle, peaceful demon, Angel ponders the unpleasant possibilities of a normally strong, violent demon getting a hold of it.

Wes agrees it's not a pretty picture.
Cordy wants the table cleared
Cordy comes down the stairs disguised by a short blonde wig and sunglasses, carrying a bag over her shoulder containing a video camera. She chides Angel and Wesley for not turning on the new security system then motions them to clear the demon guts off of the table.

Angel wants to know what information she turned up.
viewing the tapeDelivery guy, on tape
Cordelia flips open the screen on the camcorder and plays the surveillance tape. She had been following the delivery guy. She tells Angel and Wes that the guy spent a really long lunch break in a commercial auto garage. The tape shows the guy leaving the garage, stuffing two packages into his delivery pouch.

Angel now knows where the supply of the demon drug is originating.

Trevor provides info
In a commercial auto garage, Trevor Lockley is meeting with some guys in business suits. He gives them the information about Angel that he got from Kate.
asking about Angel
One of the guys wants to know why a P.I. is snooping into their operation.

Lockley says he doesn't know what Angel's reasons are but he's concerned for himself and wants to know what was in the package.

The guy doesn't offer any answers.
Lockley doesn't like the deal
Lockley presses on, telling them that he didn't agree to steal evidence from crime scenes or use his daughter, he only agreed to assist them in moving untaxed car parts.

The guy tells him they know he's gone beyond what was asked of him and it's appreciated. He pulls out an envelope and offers it to Trevor, who reluctantly takes it.

Lockley advises them to back off whatever it is they're up to for a while and leaves the garage.

One of the guys asks how they should handle the Angel problem.
Big Ugly Demon Guy
Big Ugly Demon Guy emerges from the shadows and tells the guy to kill Angel.
the minion has concerns
The guy is concerned that killing Angel might spook Lockley even more and he appears pretty edgy as it is. He's concerned that he wouldn't be trustworthy.

Big Ugly Demon Guy tells him to kill both Angel and Lockley, annoyed that nobody seems to be able to think for themselves.

Present day, Angel's office
Cordy sets the alarm system

Angel announces he's leaving
Angel comes in and announces he's off to check out the auto garage.
Wes offers to come along
Wesley offers to come along but Angel declines, saying he's just going to observe. He wants to know exactly what the situation is before taking any action.
Kate arrives
Kate enters with no warning from the security system.

Cordy is flustered that her new system doesn't seem to work.

Angel invites Lockley into his private office.

Angel wonders why Kate changed her mind
Kate hands Angel a slip of paper containing a list of the names of passengers on the subway train.

Angel thanks her, but wonders why she changed her mind about providing it.
Kate explains her reasons
She tells him she talked with her father who had asked if Angel was a good P.I. and she realized in answering the question that yes, he was. She shouldn't let her personal biases get in the way of the facts. She thinks that his instincts are pretty good so if Angel thinks something is wrong, it probably is. She asks him to share any information he finds with her.

Angel agrees.

Wes wonders if Angel is going too far
Angel, preparing to leave the office, is rummaging through the place trying to find something.

Wes wonders if Angel isn't going a bit too far.

Angel insists he has to make the effort.

Wes realizes that Angel wants to protect Kate from learning the truth about her father's illegal dealings, but he's afraid that any further attempts on Angel's part to warn Trevor Lockley could jeopardize the case.
Angel thinks Trevor needs to know the facts
Angel is adamant that Lockley has to be warned about exactly what it is he's doing business with.
Wes thinks Trevor already knows
Wes thinks he probably already knows.

Angel is sure that he doesn't.

Wesley believes Lockley must at least know that the individuals he's involved with are doing something illegal or unethical and he's obviously made the choice to work with them in spite of that.
Angel figures the price may be too high
The "choice" comment hits a little too close to home for Angel who responds abruptly that he's more than familiar with bad choices but that sometimes you end up paying a far greater price for those choices than could ever have been imagined.
Cordy hands Angel his keys
Cordelia has found what Angel has been rummaging for, his car keys. She hands them to him and tells him to go do what he has to do.

Angel thanks her and leaves the office while Cordy sets the security system.

The demon goes after Cordy but Wes intercepts it. Fight ensues.

The security system voice announces the opening of the bathroom window as another Kwaini emerges from the bathroom into the office.
Wes battles a demon
Cordelia and Wesley have their hands full battling the demons.
Angel wants some answers
Angel shows up and gets the demons' attention by showing them a vial of the drug. He assumes this is what they are seeking. He slides the vial across the floor, into his office. The demons pursue it.

Angel follows the demons into the office, grabs one of them and throws it out the window. He grabs the other from behind, throws it down on the desk and pins it there, demanding some answers.

Angel tries to reach Kate
While Angel is on his way to his car, he tries to reach Kate on his cell phone.

When her machine picks up, he leaves a message telling her that her father is in danger, she needs to get him
out of his apartment.

Trevor answers the doorTrevor's visitors await an invitation
Trevor Lockley opens the door to his apartment. The two guys in suits from the garage are standing in the hallway. One of the guys asks him to invite them in.

Lockley wants to know what they're doing there.

The guy says it's about Kate and best discussed privately.

Angel still trying to reach Kate
Angel gets to his car, still trying to reach Kate on his cell phone.

When he gets the answering machine again, he leaves another message telling her Trevor has no idea what he's dealing with and that he's on his way to her father's place.

The father is horrified by the sight before his eyes, his young daughter dead, along with his wife who is also dead on the floor. He charges Angelus with the hammer raised.
Angelus
Angelus casually shoves him aside, knocking him to the floor. He seems to be amused by the father's anguish. He says he can't believe he ever allowed the man to make him feel so small.

The father pulls himself up, backs up against the wall and begins to pray.
Liam has made something of himselfAngelus puts the bite on dad

Trevor tells him he had not.

The guys says they were just concerned she might not go along with things if she found out.

evil minion, glad to be of assistance
The guy is glad they could be of assistance in setting up the financial security aspect for Trevor.
Trevor considers the gun
Lockley sarcastically thanks him as he goes to put the bottle away, opening a cabinet door revealing a handgun. He asks if there's anything else they need to talk about.

The guy tells him there is another matter as he walks toward Lockley.

There's a knock on the apartment door. Trevor leaves the gun inside the cabinet and goes to answer it.
Angel urgently requests an invitation
Lockley opens the door to see Angel on the other side. Angel tells him to invite him in.

Trevor tries to get rid of him.
Trevor tells Angel to leave
Angel sees the visitors inside the apartment and tries to enter, but is prevented from doing so by an invisible barrier. He tells Lockley again, with more urgency, to invite him in.

Lockley tells him to leave.
Angel demands an invite
Angel pushes against the invisible barrier, practically pleading with Trevor now to invite him in.
the vamp taunts Angel
The two visitors both morph into vamp face behind Lockley. One grabs him and tosses him across the room. The other taunts Angel about not being "invited" inside.

Angel assures him that if they kill Trevor, the minute he dies, Angel will be in the apartment and will kill them both.
Trevor gets drainedAngel can't stop it
The vampire is unimpressed as he turns and viciously bites into Lockley's throat while the other vampire holds him.

Angel looks on, helpless to do anything to stop them as Trevor is drained and dropped to the floor.
Angel stakes one vamp
As soon as Lockley is dead, Angel bursts into the apartment, breaks a leg off of a chair and uses it to stake one of the vamps. The other vampire runs out of the apartment just as Kate arrives.
Kate finds Trevor's body
Kate sees her father on the floor and runs over to him. She sees the gaping wound on his neck and throws herself over his body, sobbing.

Angel stands back, not knowing what to say. He quietly tells her that Trevor invited them in, he didn't understand what they were or what the danger was.
Angel tries to explainKate wants Angel to get out
Kate is still sobbing, insisting that Angel knew what they were.

Angel tries to tell her that he couldn't help her father because he refused to invite him in.

Kate demands Angel leave.

Angel inspects a blade
Back at Angel's apartment, he is arming himself with weapons from his weapons cabinet.
Wes wonders what's up
Wesley watches briefly, then asks what happened to the observe and gather information approach.

Angel says he's moved on to the next plan. He's in no mood to stop and explain.

KateKate finds a clue
At Trevor's apartment, Kate is huddled against the wall beside her father's body. She sees an envelope stuffed full of cash laying on the floor. She moves over to it, picks it up and finds a business card inside for the auto garage.

Kate fires a few shotsKate gets threatened
At the auto garage, four guys are gathered around a desk. Kate Lockley enters alone. She shoots three of the guys. She tells them she knows what they are. As one of them walks toward her (the one who had killed her father), she pulls a stake from her pocket and drives it into his chest, dusting him.

Big Ugly Demon Guy comes out into the garage area and wonders just what it is she thinks she knows.
demon guy takes getting shot in stride
Lockley shoots him several times in the chest, which doesn't faze him. Several vampires are approaching her from behind.
Angel arrives
Just as she's about to get herself killed, Angel shows up. Fight ensues as Big Ugly Demon Guy stands back and observes.
Angel gets the drop on demon guy
The fight continues as Kate is jumped by a vamp. Angel manages to pull it off of her then pushes the business end of his fighting ax against Big Ugly Demon Guy's throat.

Angel says the deal is they let him and Lockley walk out of the garage, he won't decapitate Big Ugly Demon Guy. The head demon grunts in agreement.

Angel and Kate start to leave but Big Ugly Demon Guy comes after them. One of the vampires grabs Lockley. She manages to stake him.
Angel finishes off demon guy
Angel tosses his fighting ax into the air, then extends both arms to his sides and stakes two vampires with the stake ejecting mechanisms he has attached to each forearm. He catches the ax as it falls back down to him, swings it and decapitates Big Ugly Demon Guy.
Kate isn't interested
Angel asks Kate if she's okay. She doesn't answer. He tries to express his sympathy for what's happened, but she's not interested. She snipes that her father was human and Angel isn't, so he doesn't understand anything. She walks off without another word.

Darla enters the house asking if the game is over.

Angelus tells her he has been victorious.
Darla
Darla isn't so sure.

Angelus is confident. After all, hasn't he proven who had the power?

Darla reminds him that his defeat of his father took but a few moments, yet his father's defeat of him will last for eternity.
Angelus feels the victor
Angelus gets up and looks upon the corpse of his father. He doesn't see how the man can defeat him anymore.
Darla explains things

Angelus wonders what love has to do with it
Angelus looks at the bodies of his mother and sister and wonders how this equates with love.
