"Quickening"

Written by: Jeffrey Bell Original Air Date: November 12, 2001

York, England 1764

Holtz is riding through the countryside at night. He's waved down by another man on horseback, who signals him with a torch. The man tells Holtz "they" have been found.

Holtz instructs him to lead on as he follows.

Darla, Angelus at the door
A young girl answers the door of her home. Angelus and Darla are on the other side. Angelus asks if her mother is home.

The girl acknowledges that she is.

He asks the child if she'll take them to her mother.

The girl says her father's instructions are not to let strangers into the house while he's away.
Angelus, Darla await an invitation
Angelus and Darla exchange a look. He kindly assures the girl they aren't strangers. He knows her name, Sarah. He smiles, tells her they know all about her, that she's her father's favorite.

Darla asks if strangers would know this.

Sarah doesn't think so.

Angelus casts a quick glance behind him, asks if two friends can enter the house.

Sarah stands aside.

Angelus asks if she's inviting them in.

She does.

Darla smiles at Sarah, telling her she's a good girl, she'll give her a special treat.

Angelus bolts the door from the inside.

Holtz and his companion join more men in the woods, gathered outside of an old cabin. He is told Angelus and Darla are trapped inside.

At Holtz's home, Sarah leads Angelus and Darla into another room where her mother, Caroline, is sitting.

Angelus greets her.

She returns the greeting.

Near the cabin, Holtz and his torch bearing mob approach. He instructs them to burn it to the ground if necessary.

Angelus tells Holtz's wife they can't stay long, they just wanted to leave a message for her husband. She asks if they know him.

Darla smiles and kneels in front of Sarah.

Holtz and his men reach the cabin.

Caroline Holtz asks what the message is.

Angelus smiles at Darla who cheerfully offers to give the message to Sarah.

Mrs. Holtz looks alarmed.

Holtz and his men prepare to enter the cabin.

"Close your eyes .."
Darla tells Sarah to close her eyes, she has a surprise for her.

Sarah complies.

Darla looks toward the child's mother, morphs into vamp face then sinks her fangs into Sarah's neck.

Angelus grabs Caroline from behind by the shoulders, preventing her from getting up. He tells her he'll give her husband the message himself as he morphs into game face and puts the bite on her.

Holtz and his men enter the cabin, finding it empty. He tosses some furniture aside revealing a trap door in the floor. He finds a note attached to the underside of it.. It says, "How do you hope to save others when you can't save your own?"

Holtz realizes Darla and Angelus are at his home. He slams the trap door shut and rushes out.

Angelus distracted by the baby crying
At Holtz's, a baby is crying.

Darla finishes with Sarah, looks to Angelus who stops feeding on Caroline, annoyed by the racket.

Darla asks if something can't be done about that. She figures the baby wants to be with its mother.

Angelus says they can do that. He casually asks Darla, "Do you want to do it or should I?"

Darla laughs.

Holtz arrives at his home. He rushes to his wife whose body is lying on the floor in front of the fire. He reaches out and touches her neck, pulls his hand back, noticing the fang marks.

Angel reaches outhands touching
LA, Present Day

Darla is sleeping in Angel's bed at the hotel.

Angel enters, pulls a chair up next to the bed and sits down. He watches her for a bit, then reaches out his hand, tentatively. He lays it gently on her belly.

Darla slides her hand to rest on top of his. She wakes and asks coldly, "Are you going to do it or am I?"

Holtz catches up on history
In the underground dwelling where Holtz was revived, he's catching up on history by watching several television sets. Various historical images play out on the flickering screens.

The demon who revived him, Sahjhan, tells him he realizes it seems like it's only been a moment but it's been 227 years since they made their agreement. Much has happened in that time, empires have come and gone, weapons of mass annihilation now exist.

Holtz wants to know about England, if it survived the destruction and wars.

Sahjhan assures him it has survived mostly unchanged; "warm beer, boiled meat, bad teeth." This is why he made the move to LA. He asks Holtz if he's followed the history that's playing out on the screens before him.

Holtz assures Sahjhan he understands enough. He wonders why, with this history of war and the development of such powerful weapons, no one has killed Angelus and Darla.
Sahjhan, Holtz
Sahjhan tells him that's why Holtz was brought there. His fate and the fates of Angelus and Darla are intertwined.

Holtz is ready to fulfill his part. He wants to deal with Angelus.

Sahjhan knows this. He assures Holtz he wants Angelus as well but it has to be done right. He hasn't waited all this time to see things fouled up.

Holtz asks if Sahjhan has been tracking Angelus all this time.

Sahjhan confirms he has, but not in a conventional manner. He explains there are other dimensions where time behaves differently. He can travel within, and between, these dimensions.

Holtz figures that's why Sahjhan doesn't exhibit any signs of aging.

The demon acknowledges that's part of it, as well as having had a little work done around the eyes. He suggests Holtz get some rest. He'll need to be ready. He leaves.

Holtz sits back down and returns to watching the flickering television screens playing out his history lessons.

Angel, Darla chat
At the hotel, Darla asks Angel if he's come up with a plan to "do it."

He tells her he was thinking about the last time she was there in his room.

Darla remembers as well.

Angel assures her he's tried to forget.

She reminds him of his behavior that night.

He dismisses it, saying he'd had a rough day.

Darla reminds him of his actions; throwing her through the doors, slamming her against the wall, taking what he wanted.

Angel says at the time, it seemed like the thing to do.

There's a knock on the door. Wes, Gunn, Fred and Cordelia enter. Gunn is armed with a crossbow. Wes has had some luck translating the scroll, he thought Angel would want to know.
Angel confused by Fred
Fred goes into one of her tangential rambles about Wesley's initial problems in translating being related to verb conversions.

Wes appears interested in her explanation, Angel's just confused.

Fred defers to Wes to explain what he discovered.

Wes explains that the "tro-clon" isn't a "person or persons, it's a confluence of events."

Cordelia offers that it means not only Angel and Darla are involved, but other things they don't yet know about as well.

Angel thinks that's good news, it means the child isn't the apocalyptic evil they were afraid it was.
Wes explains
Wes offers that's not necessarily true. There are still phrases in the scroll relating to what's to be born that he hasn't yet been able to translate.

Angel tells him it's important to finish it.

Gunn agrees, they need to know exactly what Darla is carrying.

Darla knows that whatever it is, it's being protected by something.

Fred asks how she knows this.

Darla sits down in the chair and answers in spite of all her attempts, she hasn't been able to get rid of it.

Fred's sorry she asked.
Gunn willing to test the protection theory
Gunn aims the crossbow at Darla and wonders if he shot her in the stomach if it would have any effect.

Darla tells him to go ahead.
Angel between Darla and Gunn
Angel steps between Darla and Gunn, saying it's not going to happen.

Wes agrees with Angel. Since something wants whatever Darla is carrying to be born, he suggests they wait until that happens then chop off its head.

Fred considers it might not have a head.

Cordelia is thinking of using something like a large mallet.

Gunn suggests a flame-thrower.

Angel tells them no flame-throwers, nobody is going to do anything until they know exactly what they're dealing with. He suggests if anyone has a problem with that, they should leave.
Angel stops Darla from leaving
Darla gets up and heads for the door.

Angel puts his hand on her shoulder, stopping her. The offer wasn't being made to her. He asks the others if they agree.

Cordelia wonders if he's asking her to protect the vampire who bit her along with "her evil love child."

Angel nods.

Cordelia punches Darla, knocking her down to the floor, then agrees.

Darla moans loudly as she pulls herself up into the chair.

Cordelia doesn't figure she hit her that hard.

Fred points out it wasn't the punch, Darla is having contractions.

In her office at Wolfram & Hart, Lilah pricks her finger, drawing blood. She squeezes some from her fingertip into an ink well, dips a pen into the blood and signs a document with it.
Lilah
The office mail guy, Cyril, knocks on her door, enters her office. She hands him the document, tells him where to deliver it.

He stammers, telling her he's admired her for quite some time.

Lilah informs him she doesn't fraternize with mail room employees.

Cyril assures her that's not what he meant. He hands her a disk, telling her he thought she'd want to see it. He starts to leave.
Lilah gets an eyefull
Lilah pops the disk into her computer and is greeted with images on her screen of her and Angel (when he was possessed by Marcus in "Carpe Noctem") going at it on the desk in Wesley's office. She orders Cyril to wait.

Lilah gets in Cyril's face and warns him that trying to blackmail her isn't a smart idea.

A nervous Cyril tells her she's misunderstanding. He respects her, he's not attracted to her. It's just that from his job in the mailroom, he's seen the factions that form at the firm. He figures everybody has to choose a side sooner or later.
Cyril, Lilah
Lilah wonders if his delivering that disk to her is his way of saying he's chosen to be on her side.

He nods in agreement.

Lilah wonders just who it is Cyril considers their common enemy.

Cyril would rather not say.

Lilah threatens to peel off his skin and staple it back on inside out if he doesn't tell her.

Cyril offers the name, Gavin Park.

Lilah isn't surprised.

Cyril tells her that when Park sent the exterminators to Angel's hotel, they weren't getting rid of bugs, they were planting them.

Lilah heads out of her office.

In a room at W&H, Park is watching as another guy peruses various b&w monitors showing different rooms of the Hyperion. He's also working on typing up a transcription of the audio. He hands Park a large sheaf of papers, telling him he's transcribed everything up until the end of the previous week.
Park, Lilah
As Park flips through the papers, Lilah enters. She wonders if he really thought he was going to blackmail her with the disk.

Park assures her nobody cares that she was getting up close and personal with a vampire possessed by an old man. He figures that's as close as she's gotten to a relationship in years. Park is interested in something else.

He offers thanks to Cyril, who peers into the room from the hallway outside.

Lilah wonders what the line about choosing sides was about.

Park offers that Cyril did choose a side, his.

Lilah wonders if this is Park's way of seeking her assistance. She figures he could use it, considering he appears to be under-funded, understaffed and "under-talented." She takes the sheaf of papers from him and looks them over.

Park isn't interested in working with Lilah. He just wanted her to know what it was he'd been up to all these months.
Lilah makes a discovery
Lilah notes a passage in the transcript referring to an "unknown pregnant female." She asks who that is.

The surveillance guy answers they don't know, they lost the audio feed for a couple of days the previous week. He offers to pull the tape as he grabs it and puts it into the player.
Lilah makes a call
As the image of Darla arriving in the lobby of the hotel plays out on the monitor, Lilah looks on, recognizing her.

As she and Park both stare at the image, Park notes it isn't possible for vampires to get pregnant.

Lilah makes a call on her cell phone. She tells the party on the other end, Linwood, he won't believe what she's looking at.

the gang looks on as Darla has labor pains
At the hotel, Darla moans as she experiences another contraction.

Angel asks how long it's been since the last one.

Fred checks a stopwatch and responds that it's been about 20 minutes, they're still coming at irregular intervals.
Darla not enjoying labor
Darla thinks something is wrong for it to hurt this much.

Angel reminds her she likes pain.

She assures him she's not enjoying this as she grabs onto Angel's arm. She wants whatever is inside of her out, now.

Wes tells her that's the process that's happening, she's in labor.

Angel thinks that sounds like a good thing. He asks Wesley how long labor usually takes.

Wesley offers an estimated average of 18 hours for the entire process.
leaving Darla alone
Darla doesn't want to wait that long. She gets up, starts to sink to the floor with the pain of another contraction.

Angel looks at the others who take the hint and leave the bedroom.

He helps Darla to lie down on the bed, then joins the others, telling them they need to find out exactly what's inside of her and they need to do it now, before it's born.

Gunn thinks they need a "demony doctor", someone who understands the physiology.

Cordelia reminds him Darla said she'd already been the shaman, witchdoctor route.
Cordelia mocks Fred's idea
Fred timidly wonders if she ever went to a "normal doctor or hospital."

Cordelia sarcastically notes that's a good idea, but they don't admit vampires.
Wes has a plan
Angel doesn't figure they need to have her admitted.

Wes concurs. They don't need a doctor, they just need the equipment.

Darla cries out.

Angel rushes back into the bedroom.

At W&H, Linwood is finishing up a call on his cell phone as he walks down the hallway, flanked by Lilah and Gavin. He reminds them there will be trouble if the Senior Partners discover this.

Park doesn't think the Senior Partners have to know, this is why they called Linwood directly.

Linwood doesn't understand how they missed the fact that Darla was pregnant.

Lilah tells him they've gathered the psychics and mindreaders in the conference room, they'll get to the bottom of it. She doesn't think there was any way they personally could have known about this.

Gavin agrees with her assessment.

As they walk down the hall, Cyril opens a panel in the wall slightly and peers from behind it, watching.

Cyril retreats to an empty office and makes a phone call. He leaves a message on Master Tarfall's voicemail, telling him that which the Master has foreseen is coming, the others must be told.

York, England 1773
Holtz in front of the fire
Holtz is sitting before a fire in the fireplace, drinking. He flashes on images of his wife and children, Darla and Angelus.

A black vapor coalesces into a shadowy form behind him.

Holtz senses the presence and without looking back, warns it if it's come looking for anything other than a fight, it's in the wrong place.

The figure answers that's exactly what it's looking for.

Holtz demands the being be a man and show itself.

Sahjhan steps into the light from the fire, telling Holtz he's not exactly a man.

Holtz sees the demon's face, remarks that it's not human. Holtz assures him he'll get more than a fight as he pulls a small dagger and threatens him with it.

Sahjhan accepts that. He just thought Holtz might want his assistance in killing Angelus and Darla.

Holtz isn't looking for help, he plans to take care of that alone.
Sahjhan explains things
Sahjhan informs Holtz that he won't be successful in his quest, he'll die an embittered old man, never finding them.

Holtz doesn't believe the demon can know that.

Sahjhan informs him he does know it. He also knows it will be over 200 years before Holtz will again get the chance to confront either Darla or Angelus.
Holtz considers an offer
Holtz wonders if this is the part where the demon offers him the chance to change the outcome.

Sahjhan offers to take Holtz to them, 200 years into the future.

Holtz figures this will be done through sorcery.

Sahjhan's attitude is well, duh, he is a demon. Yes, it will be done through black magic.

Holtz wants to know the price.

Sahjhan tells him he only wants his promise that when the time comes, Holtz will "show them no mercy."

Holtz ponders the offer.

Sahjhan impatiently informs him the offer has a time limit. If Holtz agrees, he'll take him to them "within the hour." Or he can refuse and realize he's letting go of the only chance he'll ever get to avenge the slaughter of his wife and children.

Angel, Darla at the hospital
Angel is pushing Darla in a wheelchair down the hall of a hospital. He asks how she's holding up.

She's a bit cranky, answering that she hasn't had blood in over a day and his "devil spawn" is trying to tear its way out of her. She wonders how Angel thinks she's feeling.
Cordelia
Cordelia opens the door of one of the examining rooms and motions Angel and Darla inside.

As they enter, Wesley says he's sent Gunn and Fred in search of ultrasound equipment so they can get a look at what's inside Darla.

Angel notes the empty observation gallery above the examining room.

Wesley confirms it's a teaching hospital.

Wesley asks Darla how she's doing. S

he doesn't answer, just sits quietly in thought.

Angel asks if something is wrong.

Darla answers the contractions have stopped.

Angel wonders what that means.

Wesley walks over to Darla, extends his hand toward her belly, pulls back. He asks if she minds.

Darla promises she won't bite.

Cordy notes whatever she's carrying might.
Wes checks Darla out
Wesley gently lays his hand on Darla's belly. He tells her she may have been experiencing false labor.

Darla and Angel look to Wes for an explanation. He offers that it means whatever she's carrying may not be ready to be born yet.

Darla is beyond ready, she'd cut it out of herself if she could.

Fred and Gunn enter with the ultrasound equipment.

As Wes and Gunn set things up, Angel asks Darla if she wants to see what's inside of her.

She doesn't look too sure.

Holtz makes a grab
In the underground dwelling, Holtz is pacing. Sahjhan returns. Holtz is impatient, angry at being kept waiting. He demands to know where Darla and Angelus are as he reaches out to grab Sahjhan. Holtz's hands go through him as the place where he touched Sahjhan turns momentarily into a black vaporous form.
Sahjhan, Holtz make plans
Sahjhan tells him it won't be that easy. He wonders if Holtz thinks he'd have gone to these lengths to bring him over 200 years into the future if he could just stake Angelus himself. He informs Holtz there are greater forces than either of them at work here, rules and timetables that must be adhered to. He figures it would benefit Holtz to learn to play with others.

Sahjhan morphs into his "street face", a normal human visage, and instructs Holtz to put on the coat he's brought him. He's arranged for some assistance in this quest.

Lilah in the conference room
In the crowded conference room at W&H, various interrogations are going on. Linwood thanks one of the psychics for coming. He wonders if it isn't the role of the psychic to foresee the future to prevent these kinds of problems for W&H.

The psychic nervously offers his apologies.

Linwood doesn't think that's going to be enough but he's willing to give the guy a chance to save himself.

The psychic and Linwood look at each other briefly, the psychic has read him and knows Linwood is going to have him killed.

Linwood wonders why he didn't have that kind of accurate foresight when it was needed as someone standing behind the psychic throws a plastic bag over his head and drags him off, suffocating him.
Lilah, Park & Linwood
Lilah tells Linwood nobody knows how Darla could be pregnant but there is a rumored prophecy about a vampire birth, however the scroll that contains the alleged prophecy seems to be missing.

Linwood wonders if Lilah has any idea how many factions would kill to get this child. He wants to be sure W&H get it before anyone else does.

Lilah assures him they'll be successful.

Linwood says once they get it, they'll dissect it and discover the meaning of it.
Lilah gets a threat
Park approaches and informs Linwood he has an overseas call.

Linwood lets Lilah know if the Senior Partners seek to assign blame, he'll step forward and blame her for it. Since Darla was resurrected under Lilah's watch, he figures that makes her the prime scapegoat.

Linwood departs, Park laughs.

Lilah assures Gavin it's not over, he might even learn something by paying attention, as she places a call on her cell phone.

sword guy
A young man is sitting on the floor of a darkened room in front of a burning candle. He raises his hand, opens his closed fist, revealing a crumpled piece of paper. He burns the paper over the candle. His cell phone rings. He answers the phone, listens briefly then signifies his understanding to the calling party (presumeably Lilah).

He hangs up the phone, extinguishes the candle and stands. He reaches out toward a sword mounted across the room on the wall. As he stares at it, the sword moves then flies through the air into his hand.

He works out with it a bit, preparing for his mission.

Darla gets a sonogram
At the hospital, Wes runs the ultrasound wand over Darla's belly as the others stand around, looking on. He looks at the image on the monitor noting it's been awhile since he's looked at one of these.

Angel asks if that's a head.

Wes thinks it may be, looks at the image and wonders if perhaps the head is at the other end.
Fred considers the possibilities
Fred thinks maybe they're both right.

Gunn and Wesley both give her a look.

Fred says she wasn't suggesting it was an evil two headed thing, necessarily.

Wes looks back at the monitor.

Darla looks at the image on the screen as well, identifying her "little parasite."
Agngel looks at the monitor
Wes notices something.

Angel asks what.

Wesley continues looking at the ultrasound monitor and answers, "it's human", it's a boy.
"It's a boy"
Angel repeats that as does Wesley, several times.

Fred smiles.

Wes tells Darla the news.

She's not thrilled to hear it.

Gunn looks at Angel who ponders with a smile the impending arrival of his son.

Fred interrupts, knowing the ultrasound image is fascinating but --

Angel stares at the monitor, still wrapped up in the impending fatherhood thing.
Cordelia looking for a plan
Fred points out they're surrounded by vampires who are positioned in the observation gallery above the examining room as well as in the room itself.

Cordelia wonders if anybody has a plan.

Gunn figures not getting killed is a good plan.

The vampires' leader honors the "miracle child" as the rest of them kneel to Darla's unborn offspring.

Sahjhan, Holtz
Holtz and Sahjhan (in his human face) are walking down the sidewalk as Sahjhan explains things in this time. He says it's not really all that different, people are pretty much the same as they were in his day; they work hard, drink too much, fight and fall in love --

Holtz looks at a series of images on the side of a building illustrating family life.

Sahjhan says yes, they have families too.

Holtz hopes the men Sahjhan has hired to assist them are ruthless as they approach a locked door.

Sahjhan knocks. A voice inside tells him to go away. Sahjhan identifies himself then tells Holtz they'll get the men they need there.
Sahjhan, Holtz check out the gym's occupants
Sahjhan, who has returned to his demonic visage, and Holtz enter a grungy gym where various types of demons are working out.

Holtz notes these aren't men at all.

Sahjhan chides him for the gender/species confusion thing but admits he could have been clearer by referring to them as "minions."
Holtz
Holtz watches two demons going at each other in a ring.

Sahjhan wonders if he's ever seen Grappler demons fight before. A crunch is heard as one of the demons rips the head off of his opponent. Sahjhan notes they're not too smart, but they're merciless in battle.

Sahjhan calls the demons to come over to them and meet the new boss. He asks the Grappler demon to leave the head behind in the ring. He complies by dropping it.

Sahjhan asks Holtz if he's ready to give the orders.

Holtz wonders if there are any other surprises he should be aware of.

Wes and others looking at worshipping vamp
At the hospital, Cordelia wonders what's going on.

Angel asks the vampire leader what they want.

He answers that they want to protect the "miracle child."

Angel is slightly relieved to hear that. He figures protecting is a good thing, they all have the same goal.

The guy with the sword comes crashing through a window in the observation gallery and leaps to the floor of the examining room below. He notices too late that he's surrounded by vampires who make short work of him.
Angel, Gunn, Darla
The vampire leader raises his bloody face from feeding on sword guy, telling the others the arrival of the child has been foretold by their "potentate." He says they will protect the "special child" with their lives.

Angel wonders if Darla heard that, their kid is "special."

The leader instructs the humans be killed so their blood can be used to nourish the mother and child.

Darla smiles at the thought she's going to get a meal after all.

In an office at W&H, Gavin Park is showing a paramilitary type guy blueprints for the Hyperion. He figures the plans should allow the commander to make solid tactical decisions. He mentions that he has full surveillance capabilities as well, so they can monitor the assault from W&H.

The commander is confident they'll be able to retrieve the target, but he's not so sure about securing the retrieval of the target's cargo.
the doctor meets the W&H gang
Linwood gives him a look, then looks to Gavin. Gavin offers a translation, the commander is referring to getting the baby from Darla.

Linwood assures him they have an expert to handle that part of the job.

Lilah introduces Dr. Fetvanovich from the Balkans office, as he shuffles into the office. She describes him as an authority on supernatural obstetrics. She acknowledges they're fortunate he's consented to assist them.

Dr. Fetvanovich assures her he's the one who's fortunate since a vampire birth is unprecedented. He's looking forward to dissecting both mother and child.

Darla not interested in fighting
At the hospital, Angel suggests Darla might want to join in the fight.

Darla declines. She clarifies with the vamp leader that they're only going to kill the humans.

He tells her they'll kill the humans, feed her, then cut her open, don her entrails as apparel, eat her eyes then worship the child.

Darla hops off of the examining table and agrees with Angel, she'll join in the fight.

Angel says he and Gunn will hold them off as long as they can, the others should get Darla to the car.

Darla would rather stay and fight, teach the young ones a thing or two about real carnage.

Angel thinks that's thoughtful of her but it's best that she get out of there.
Fred asks for a daggerFred makes a threat
Fred asks Gunn if he has an extra dagger she could borrow. He hands her one.

Angel tells the others to move on his count of three. As he counts, Fred grabs Darla, holding the business end of the dagger against her belly. She warns the vampires that she'll cut if they make any moves.

The leader holds back his minions.

Fred whispers to Darla that they don't know the knife can't hurt the child.

Darla wryly notes they do now as she informs Fred that vampires have an acute sense of hearing.

Fight ensues. The gang briefly gains the upper hand as Wes orders them out.

Angel is the last one out, finishing off one of the remaining vamps with a broken broom handle.

In the lobby of the hotel, one of the paramilitary types gives the "all clear" on his radio. More enter, some rappelling into the lobby, others charging in the front door.

Dr. Fetvanovich follows them in, accompanied by the commander. The doctor instructs them to set up in the lobby and suggests they get a hose, things will likely get bloody. He directs the baby's cage to be set next to the mother's.

the gang in Angel's car
The gang are all loaded into the car, Angel is driving. Cordelia and Fred are in the front seat, Gunn, Darla and Wes are in the back. Gunn thinks they've lost their pursuers.

Angel asks if anybody is hurt. Everyone is okay. He asks Darla if she's all right.

She doesn't answer.

He asks her again.

She says she's fine.

Wes isn't so sure.

Darla insists it's nothing but her usual cocky demeanor seems to be absent.

Angel thinks seeing the image of their child on the ultrasound monitor had an effect on her.

She denies that, saying she only regrets the vampire cultists didn't kill them all. She asks where they're headed, pointing out she's hungry and that can get ugly.
Wes suggests more research
Fred asks where they're going.

Angel answers they'll go somewhere safe.

Cordy wonders just where that might be, noting the hotel certainly wouldn't qualify. Angel figures they need to get out of town.

Wes points out that others seem to know a lot more about the significance of this child than they do. They need to catch up and the things they need to do that are back at the hotel. He tells Angel they can't protect his child unless they retrieve the scrolls.

Angel agrees to a quick stop.

Outside the hotel, one of the paramilitary guys is checking the area. He turns as Holtz approaches from behind and smashes him in the head.

Inside the lobby, the doctor is laying out his instruments.

Holtz walks in through the front door.

The guys inside aim their weapons at him.

Holtz wants to know where Angelus is.

the surveillance monitor display of the Hyperion lobby
At W&H, Linwood and the others watch the drama at the hotel playing out on the array of surveillance monitors in front of them. He wonders who this man is and why he's messing up his plans.

Lilah doesn't have an answer but notes he referred to Angel by his "old name".

Holtz demands those in the lobby give up the vampires, thinking they're shielding Angelus and Darla.
Park, Linwood, Lilah
Linwood has had enough. He gives instructions through his radio that the man in the lobby is to be killed. As his men comply with his orders and attack, the picture on the monitors breaks up, not allowing a clear view of what's happening. The audio continues, indicating a violent struggle.

Lilah figures it will be over soon.

A bloodcurdling scream is heard on the audio feed.

Park smiles, thinking that signifies the end.

Linwood picks up the radio and tries to raise someone at the hotel. He gets no response.

a stop in the alleyWes gives Angel directions on finding the scroll
Angel pulls the car to a stop in an alley. Cordy asks why he's stopped there.

He tells her the hotel is nearby, he'll go the rest of the way on foot.

Cordelia gets behind the wheel.

Angel asks Wes about the scrolls.

Wes tells him where to find them.

Angel directs Wes to leave without him if he hasn't returned within five minutes.

Wes agrees.

Cordy wonders where they're supposed to go.

Angel tells her to get to someplace safe.
Darla calls to Angel
Darla calls out to Angel. He looks at her. The others stare at her. She pauses, then tells him to just go, clearly not what she had planned to say when she first got his attention.

Angel leaps up onto a nearby fire escape and heads for the hotel.

Angel surveys the damage in the lobbyAngel sees Holtz
Angel arrives at the Hyperion, runs down the upper floor hallway, leaps over the balcony to the lobby below.

He's greeted by the sight of the lobby trashed, bodies of paramilitary types strewn about, many of them still clutching their weapons.

As Angel looks upon the body of Dr. Fetvanovich, Holtz greets him by his old name.

Angel turns to see who has just addressed him.

Holtz tells him he's been looking for him.

Angel's expression is one of stunned surprise.

the gang tries to decide what to do
In the alley, Gunn points out that Angel said to wait five minutes.

Cordy notes it's been over six.

Darla figures that's typical.

Fred doesn't think it would hurt to wait another minute or so, after all, not much can happen in a minute.
Wes sees it's time
Darla screams.

Wes looks into the car, points out it's time, her water has broken. He tells Gunn to check the trunk for a blanket.

Cordy wonders if he plans on delivering the kid right there in the back seat of the car in an alley. She thinks they should go somewhere.

Fred worries what's holding Angel up as Darla screams.
