"The House Always Wins"

S4/EPISODE 3

Written by: David Fury Original Air Date: October 20, 2002

vamp guy tries to escape
An injured guy staggers out of a building, clutching his arm to his side. He begins to run down the street but is intercepted by Connor.
Connor confronts vamp guy
The guy observes that nothing "human" could move that fast. He wants to know what Connor is. His question is met with a punch to the face, sending him crashing into a parked car.

Connor belatedly answers the question he doesn't know yet what he is, but he knows the creature he's facing and how to deal with it. He pulls out a stake. Fight ensues.

Angel watches the proceedings from a nearby rooftop, muttering advice on Connor's every move.
Cordelia looks on
From the Higher Realm, Cordelia is looking on, noting the similarities between father and son; good looks, sweetness and broody nature. She doesn't think Angel has to worry about Connor. She thinks he should be worrying about her, the "one stuck in misty, magic land for like, forever!" She wants out of there. She calls out, "Help me!"
Angel watches the action
Angel looks up as if he's heard something then returns his attention to the street below where Connor is still fighting the vamp.
Connor dusts the vamp
The vamp gets the advantage, knocking the stake out of Connor's hand. He continues clutching his arm to his side as he attempts to make an escape. His path is blocked by a falling piece of masonry shattering at his feet. Angel has knocked it off of the roof onto the street. The vamp looks up to the rooftop, sees Angel, then turns just in time to see Connor as he dusts him.
Connor checks above
Connor looks up to where the vamp was looking , but sees nothing. Angel has stepped back from the ledge and is no longer visible from the street.

Connor runs off as Angel looks after him.
Angel
Angel notes he knows someone is there, watching him.

Cordelia is thrilled and relieved to hear that, telling him he has no idea what it's been like.
Gunn, Fred
Fred and Gunn approach Angel, they being who he sensed watching him, not Cordelia.

Fred assures him they weren't spying.

Gunn admits they were, actually.

Fred concedes that's true, they've been concerned about him, wondering where he'd been going off to the past few nights.
Angel
Gunn suggests Angel go after Connor, talk to him if that's what he wants to do.

Angel shakes his head no.

Fred wants to know what he does want then. She notices he's been distracted. She wonders if he's not as ready as he thought to move on without Cordelia and his son.
Gunn has concerns
Gunn points out with Angel's attention elsewhere, they're not accomplishing much. In his view, Angel acts like he has a plan, always on the move, but they don't know where they're headed.
Angel has a plan
Angel looks at the two of them, smiles and tells them, "C'mon" as he leads the way off of the roof.

Fred and Gunn follow, Fred wondering where they're going.

Angel tells her the three of them are going on a "retreat".

Fred asks if he means a "spiritual journey?"

Gunn wonders if Angel means like the Tibetan monastery retreat he went on once ("Heartthrob").

Angel answers, "exactly."

Welcome to Las Vegas
Angel, Gunn and Fred enter Las Vegas.
cruising the strip
As they cruise the strip, Gunn notes that this is his kind of retreat.

Angel thinks they could use the vacation, pointing out it's been awhile since he's had one, not counting his time sunk in the ocean.

Fred reminds him the reason they're there is to see Lorne.

Angel agrees, saying after they do that maybe they can check out a show.

Fred wants to be sure he means after Lorne has had a chance to read him and get him back on the right road to his destiny.
Gunn, Fred
Angel looks around the city, noting the changes.

Gunn is surprised Angel has been there before.

Angel tells him he was there a few times. He points across the street, telling Gunn "there used to be dunes over there."

Gunn realizes it's been quite awhile since Angel was in town, noting the Dunes was torn down ten years earlier.

Angel clarifies, he meant sand dunes, not the Dunes casino. He remembers "Bugsy used to call them dung piles."

Gunn asks if he means Bugsy Siegel.

Angel confirms that, saying he wasn't much of a talker but he was hell on a tennis court. He asks what they want to do first.

Fred says the place Lorne is performing is called the Tropicana.

Gunn doesn't figure it's the Tropicana.

Fred wonders why not.
the billboard
Angel explains that's a high profile place in town, not some out of the way "dive." He figures considering Lorne's appearance, he'd be hanging out somewhere more discreet.
reacting to seeing the billboard
Fred wonders just how discreet as Angel pulls the car to a stop in front of a huge billboard advertising Lorne's headlining at the Tropicana.

They all stare at the billboard, stunned.

Lorne's introductionGunn, Fred, Angel watch the show
Lorne appears on-stage and performs "It's Not Easy Being Green" in front of a full house.

Gunn, Fred and Angel are seated at one of the tables, watching the show. Gunn finds it odd nobody seems to have noticed Lorne is different.

Fred figures the audience just thinks it's makeup, "like the Blue Man group." She ponders that a minute, then asks Angel if he thinks they're --

He answers, "only two of them."
LornetteLorne performing
Lorne finishes that number and thanks the audience, then continues his act, launching into a rendition of "Lady Marmalade". He's assisted by his backup singers, "The Lornettes", and a plethora of showgirls, ladies made up to look like himself; with exaggerated red horns, some also including green body makeup.
Gunn, Fred get dissed
As he sings he goes into the audience and encourages them to participate as he offers the microphone to some of them.

Fred is excited to note Lorne coming in their direction.

Gunn hopes Lorne isn't going to ask him to sing as Lorne walks right past their table without even acknowledging them.
Lorne invites Vivian to sing
Lorne offers the microphone to a young, dark haired woman who joins in singing. He asks her name, she answers, "Vivian."

He asks her about the people accompanying her.

She explains it's a going away party for her, she's leaving for a culinary school in Paris.

Lorne congratulates her with a kiss on the cheek and moves on, picking up the song at the chorus.

the AI gang in the crowd
Angel, Fred and Gunn are waiting outside the stage entrance with a crowd of other fans. Fred gushes about how wonderful the show was.

Gunn wonders why Lorne ignored them during the audience participation part of the show, he thinks it would have been nice to at least have been asked.

Angel offers his opinion the show was a bit overdone, recalling advice he offered to Sammy Davis, Jr. once at the Sands, "When you, Frank and Dean are the meal, you don't need the trimmings."

Gunn wonders if Angel is actually saying he knew the "Rat Pack".

He says he met them a few times, for drinks, pointing out he did have a life before Fred and Gunn entered it.
Fred waving at Lorne
Fred wonders if Angel has considered what he's going to sing.

Angel doesn't like the sound of that.

Fred clarifies she was talking about his singing for Lorne so Angel could be read.

Angel is in no hurry to get to that part. He wonders who's interested in checking out the blackjack tables.
Lorne on the way out
Lorne exits the stage door to the screams of an adoring crowd.

Fred yells out to him, waving her arm, trying to get his attention.

Gunn smiles in his direction.

Lorne doesn't notice. He signs a couple of autographs and then rushes off with an African-American guy, Spencer, at his side.

Angel tries to follow but is stopped by security. He tries to explain he's a friend of Lorne's but security isn't buying the story.

Spencer, Lorne
On the way to Lorne's dressing room, Spencer asks who his friends are.

Lorne brushes it off, saying they're just some fans. They enter the dressing room and close the door behind them.

Two guards stand watch outside the door.
Lorne gets a drink
Lorne sits at the makeup table and runs a brush through his hair.

One of the Lornettes brings him a drink.

He thanks her, she leaves. He downs the drink in one gulp.
Lee DeMarco gushes over Lorne's performance
He gets up from the makeup table, removes his jacket and hangs it up. There's a knock on the door.

Spencer opens the door, Lee DeMarco enters, gushing about Lorne's performance.

Lorne tells him he's tired.

Lee understands that, saying he knows how lucky he is to have someone with Lorne's talent headlining at his casino.
DeMarco wants something from LorneLorne gets a threat
Spencer holds out a seating chart representing the showroom audience area.

Lorne wonders if they couldn't do this later.

Lee says he'd be glad to but he has other things to do and Lorne has another show to get ready for.

Lorne would prefer to do it later.

Spencer punches him in the stomach, doubling him over.

Lee thinks now is a good time unless Lorne wants them to "pink slip another girl from your act."
Lorne gives the info
Spencer holds out the seating chart.

As Lorne points to various places on the chart, he recalls what he read of the individuals seated in specific locations; striped tie guy will be a state senator in twelve years, green sweater guy will write a Pulitzer prize winning novel, girl in blue (Vivian) will own three 5-star restaurants in the next ten years. He pauses a moment.

Lee asks him if there's anything else.

Lorne answers that's all there is.
Lorne locked in
Spencer leaves with the chart.

Lee thanks Lorne for his cooperation and tells Lorne if he or his staff can get him anything, just let them know.

He exits the dressing room, telling Lorne to have a good second show. He pushes a button on a small remote he's holding which brings down a wall of bars over the dressing room entrance, locking Lorne inside.

Wesley's company
Wesley is at his place, there's another guy in his apartment sitting on the couch. Wes is standing, talking on the phone to Lilah. He tells her it's okay, he has to work late as well. He says he's not the type to be waiting with an irritated expression and a burnt meal. He offers his availability around midnight if she'll be free by then.
Wes handles business
He gets signaled by call waiting that he has another call. He puts Lilah on hold and takes it.

He tells the caller to hold on then asks the guy in his apartment if Emil can put things together for him.

The guy answers that it will be expensive.

Wes says that doesn't matter, he just wants to be sure it works.

The guy figures he can do it.
Wes settles in for phone sex with Lilah
Wes goes back to his phone, telling the caller they'll certainly take Angel's clients if he's out of town. He instructs the caller to call him back in twenty minutes then switches back to Lilah. He tells her midnight may not work out after all.

Wes and Lilah start a game of phone sex.

Wes pauses, asks the guy in his apartment why he's still there.

The guy leaves.

Wes relaxes on the couch and goes back to what he was doing before the interruption.

Gunn, Angel, Fred at the blackjack table
Gunn and Fred are seated at a card table at the casino, playing a few hands. Angel is standing behind them.

Gunn urges him to sit down and relax for a while.

Angel doesn't understand why Lorne hasn't contacted them since he knows now they're there.

Fred thinks he's just exhausted after his show.

Gunn thinks maybe Lorne's ego is overblown with his newfound success, he doesn't care about the "little people" anymore.

Fred doesn't believe that's possible.

Gunn isn't so sure.
Vivian gets an offer
One of the Lornettes approaches Vivian who is seated at a card table adjacent to the table Gunn and Fred are playing at. She hands Vivian a green chip and congratulates her.

Vivian doesn't understand, she asks if she's won something.

The woman tells her she's won a chance at the million dollar "Spin to Win", explaining it's an exclusive promotion of the club.

Vivian is impressed with the thought of a chance at a million dollars.
the Lorne cutout
The Lornette directs her to a curtained off area, protected by a couple of security guards. There's a large cardboard cutout of Lorne, encouraging those entering to take a spin. She instructs Vivian to show the guard the chip and he'll grant her access.
Angel intercepts the Lornette
As Vivian heads for the chance at a million, the Lornette walks away.
Lornette chats with Angel
Angel intercepts her, recognizing her from Lorne's show. He asks if she could give a note to Lorne for him as he offers it to her.

She says she can't.

Angel explains he's a friend of Lorne's, he thinks he'd want to know he was there. He asks again if she can get the note to Lorne, saying he's sure Lorne would appreciate it.

She hesitates.

He smiles at her and tells her, "I know I would."

She smiles back and takes the note, telling him she'll do what she can.
Angel notices something amiss
Angel walks down the aisle, looking at the rows of patrons, expressionless, mechanically plugging coins into the slot machines.
Cordelia looking on
Cordelia watches, thinking Angel has noticed something is amiss with those people. She figures they could use Angel's help and wonders why he's not particularly perceptive about her predicament. She shouts his name.

Angel looks around like he heard something, but it's quickly forgotten.

Gunn, Fred
Gunn and Fred are still playing blackjack. Fred wins another hand. She says she feels bad.

Gunn tells her not to, if he had her mathematical skills, he'd be counting cards too.

She informs him that's not what she was talking about. She feels bad about Lorne acting so strangely with them

Gunn still thinks Lorne is on a fame trip and that's why he's ignored them.

Fred reckons Angel could use Lorne's help, she's concerned about him. She looks behind her and sees Angel standing a short distance away. She tells Gunn she agrees he was right sending Connor away but with both Connor and Cordelia gone, she thinks he's lonely.

Gunn reminds her Angel has been through a lot more than that in his long unlife. He's sure that with or without Lorne's help, the vacation will be good for Angel.

As Gunn is assuring Fred Angel will be fine, Angel is hustled out behind them by a couple of security people.

Fred wonders what's going on with Lorne.

Gunn suggests they find out.

Fred asks if he means now.

He tells her it's more important than his fun if it will set her mind at ease.

She notes he's out of chips and figures that's the reason he's willing to do it now.

He doesn't deny that.

Fred notices Angel has disappeared and wonders where he went.

Gunn figures he's having more luck than Gunn is.

Angel gets roughed up
Outside of the casino, Angel is slammed against the building by the two security guys. They beat on him, knocking him to the ground. They tell him they don't like stalkers, he's not to return to the casino.
Angel prepared to kick ass
Angel gets up, in vamp face, telling them he'll give them some things to remember him by. He morphs back into human face, then kicks some ass.

As he walks away, he notes the town was a friendlier place when it was run by the mob.
Angel bumps into Vivian
As Angel is walking back toward the main entrance to the Tropicana, he bumps into Vivian. He apologizes.

She walks on past him, seemingly oblivious.

Angel watches as she steps into the street, directly in front of an approaching taxi.
Angel asks Vivian what's going on
Angel manages to pull her out of the way before she's hit. He asks her if she's okay.

She answers, emotionless, that she's fine.

Angel wonders where she was going.

he holds up her empty coin cup and notes that she was out of quarters, she needed more. She says she has to "play to win."

Fred, Gunn find the dressing roomGunn, Fred ponder a plan
Fred and Gunn peer around a corner and find Lorne's dressing room. Gunn notes the two security guards outside the door and gets the feeling something isn't right.

Fred reminds him she's been trying to tell him that. She wonders if they should go find Angel.

They look back around the corner of the hallway. Gunn notes they won't be able to get past the guards without a fight.

They notice one of the Lornettes coming out of another doorway in the hall. They look at each other, both getting the same idea.
Fred tries to explain
Fred comes out of that same room, made up as a Lornette with the costume (black and red corset, black garter, black lace stockings and gloves), horns and green body makeup. She's carrying a drink on a serving tray.

As she approaches the guards outside of Lorne's dressing room, one of them informs her Lorne has already been served his drink.

Fred nervously fumbles for an explanation, saying she was told --, she was sent to --, she can't quite complete a thought.

One of the guards gets it. He figures she was sent there for sex.

Fred isn't sure what to think of that conclusion.

The guard assures her there's no need to be nervous, "The demon doesn't bite, not with his mouth, anyway." He laughs as he looks at the other guard who joins in.
Fred, guardsGunn watches Fred's act
Fred laughs nervously and starts to walk past them into the dressing room.

The other guard stops her.

Gunn looks on, anxious about what's happening.

The guard points out that Fred missed a couple of places on her neck with the green makeup. He suggests she touch that up before she goes on-stage.

A relieved Fred agrees to take care of that as she giggles and enters the dressing room.
Lorne nearly clocks FredLorne happy to see Fred
Fred enters the dressing room, closing the door behind her.

Lorne nearly bashes her over the head with a liquor bottle. He gleefully recognizes her, thankful they've finally arrived to rescue him from the hell he's trapped in.

Fred looks around the elegantly appointed dressing room, noting it doesn't look all that miserable. She tells him they didn't even realize he needed rescuing.

Lorne doesn't understand why they didn't know when he had told them.

Fred asks when that was.

Lorne reminds her every time they talked on the phone, he kept asking about "Fluffy".

Fred still doesn't get it. She asks who Fluffy is.

An exasperated Lorne tells her it's the nonexistent dog, "The universally recognized code for 'I'm being held prisoner, send help!'"
Lorne explains things
Fred gets it now. She asks who's responsible.

Lorne explains it's the owner of the casino, Lee DeMarco. He used to be a "second rate magician" until he came into possession of something actually mystical. Now he's a psycho who's using Lorne to ruin people's lives.

Fred asks how Lee is ruining people.

Lorne explains about a game.

the wheelAngel in the wheel room
Angel enters the room where the "Spin to Win" wheel is located. The croupier tells him it's a private area, invitation only, he has to leave.

Several people are seated at the table, having placed their bets, watching the wheel spin.

A bouncer tries to remove Angel from the room.

Angel snaps his arm and sends him to the floor.

The croupier again tells Angel he has to leave.
Lee DeMarcoAngel wants some answers
Lee enters and says Angel can stay.

The croupier points out the wheel is already spinning.

Lee says it's okay, Angel is allowed to play anyway. He tosses Angel one of the special chips.

Angel one hand catches it and tosses it back onto the table. He says he's not there to play games, he wants to talk about a girl who had been in that room.
Angel's chip moves into position
As his attention is on Lee, the chip he'd tossed onto the table magically moves onto a bet.
Lee doesn't offer any info
Lee tells Angel they get a lot of girls in that room, he needs to be more specific.

Angel doesn't think that's necessary, realizing whatever happened to Vivian, she's not the only one who has been affected.

Lee denies any knowledge of what Angel is asking about.

Angel starts to approach him, suggesting perhaps he can jar his memory.

The wheel stops spinning, the croupier announces "the house wins" and clears the bets from the table.
Angel loses his destiny
Angel stops in his tracks, his expression blank.

Lee hands out coin cups filled with quarters to the participants, including Angel, inviting them to play the slots. He bids them good luck.

Angel takes the cup and thanks him, then departs.

Gunn keeps an eye on things
As Gunn looks on from around the corner of the hallway, Fred screams and runs out of Lorne's dressing room. She babbles on as the guards look on, telling them Lorne shot lasers at her from his horns and then he escaped.
Frantic Fred
One of the guards points out the door she came out of is the only way in or out.

Fred scrambles for another explanation. She screams that he did some kind of demonic transformation and escaped through the drain in the bathroom. She urges them to hurry into the dressing room and try to find him.

As the guards enter, one of them puts out a call on his radio for reinforcements.

Lorne comes out after they go in, closing the door behind him.

Gunn ties the doors shut.

As they rush down the hall, Lorne asks where Angel is. He figures they're going to need him.

DeMarco in the back room
In a back room of the casino, brokers work the phones as various destinies scroll across a large ticker on the wall.

Spencer hands Lee a sheet of paper, telling him it contains the information they got on Lorne's friend.
Spencer provides some info
Lee looks over the information, noting that Angel is a vampire.

Spencer points out he's not just a vampire, he's got a soul.

Lee continues reading, noting something interesting.

Spencer agrees the part about Angel being slated to play an important role in an upcoming apocalypse is indeed fascinating.
Spencer gets bad news
Lee corrects him, telling him that role to play should be past tense now. Lee directs him to put the word out to their brokers and also suggests he contact "that weird law firm in L.A.". Lee walks away.

The phone rings. Spencer answers it, his expression indicating he's just getting the news that Lorne has escaped.

Angel playing the slot
Gunn, Lorne and Fred are rushing down an aisle in the casino. They find Angel, mechanically playing a slot machine. Gunn asks where he's been.

Angel answers he was "there before, now I'm here." He doesn't take his eyes off of the slot machine reels.
Gunn tries to enlist Angel's help
Gunn tells him they're in trouble, they need to get Lorne out of there in a hurry. He asks if Angel can slow down their pursuers so they can escape.

Angel keeps playing the slot, looks at Gunn briefly and answers, "okay."

Gunn isn't sure what's going on but doesn't have time to figure it out. He tells Angel to give him the car keys, he'll bring the car around front and pick Angel up at the end of the block.

Angel again answers blankly, "okay."
getting lost in the crowd
Gunn, Fred and Lorne head out as Angel moves to another slot machine and calls after them, "Good luck."

Gunn punches out a security guard on the way out the door.

As they head outside, they get turned around in the large crowd, not recognizing where they are.

Lorne says they took the wrong exit, they're in "Glitter Gulch."

Gunn wonders where they left the car.

Fred suggests a direction, then sees casino security in that area and decides that's not a good idea after all. The three of them huddle together as the security guards walk past.
Gunn, Fred, Lorne, try to find their way
As they work their way through the crowd, Gunn asks Lorne just how DeMarco is destroying people's lives.

Lorne answers he's "taking them."

Gunn wonders if he means Lee is killing people.

Lorne says it's worse, he's been using Lorne to read audience members and find ones with valuable destinies. Those that he chooses are singled out to play the "Spin to Win" game but it's a scam. The participants' destinies are imprinted on the special chips they bet with, it's a losing bet. The house always wins. It's fixed that way. The participants lose their futures, their destinies. Lorne explains the stolen destinies are then offered up on the black market to those willing to pay the price to change their lives in a kind of "futures market.".
Angel plays the slots
Fred asks what happens to those who lose their destinies.

Lorne answers nothing happens or ever will. They have no purpose or direction, no goals, they won't succeed at anything ever again. He says most never leave town, some never even get out of the casino, staying there shoving coins into machines that will never pay. As he's explaining that last part, we see Angel still plugging quarters into the slot machine.
Fred, Gunn, Lorne run into security
Gunn suddenly realizes that's what's happened to Angel.

Fred points out approaching security guards. They turn to run, but find more security blocking the way.

Gunn figures it's time to fight it out.
Lorne's high note
Lorne has another idea. He grabs a nearby microphone and belts out a shrill note that shatters glass and marquis light bulbs, causing chaos and enough of a distraction for them to make an escape as the large crowd disperses in various directions.
Fred, Gunn, Lorne get away
When Gunn, Fred and Lorne are a safe distance away, they stop running. Fred congratulates Lorne on a good plan.

An angry Gunn thinks Lorne sold Angel out to DeMarco. He's sure Lee was salivating at the thought of getting a hold of that one considering it's the destiny of a "champion to save the world, or destroy it."
Lorne hears Gunn out
Lorne can't believe Gunn would think him capable of that.

Gunn isn't sure what he's capable of anymore. He offers that maybe Lorne got carried away with all the perks of fame, he didn't listen to his conscience.

Fred tries to get Gunn to calm down, telling him it doesn't matter.

Gunn assures her it matters to him. He wants to know why Lorne didn't refuse Lee DeMarco in the first place. He demands an answer.
Gunn offers an apology
Lorne tells him he did refuse at first. DeMarco had a girl killed in front of him for that refusal and assured him it would happen every time he refused in the future.

Gunn pauses a moment, then apologizes.

Lorne is sorry for the mess as well.

Gunn pulls Angel's car up across the street from the Tropicana. He instructs Lorne and Fred to keep the engine running in case they have to make a hasty retreat. He heads into the casino to find Angel.
Fred asks Lorne about Angel's destiny
Fred asks Lorne about Angel's destiny. She doesn't want to leave without getting it back.

Lorne responds that it's Vegas, what's lost usually stays lost.
Angel playing the slot
Gunn finds Angel, still playing the slots. He calls his name.

Angel turns to face him, expressionless.

Gunn asks if he recognizes him.

Angel knows Gunn by name.

Gunn reminds Angel he's his friend.

Angel's response, "I know. I'm not stupid." He turns back to feeding the slot machine.
Gunn tries to reach Angel
Gunn tries to tell him that something has happened.

Angel's attention is on the reels of the slot machine.

Gunn grabs him and tries to get through, telling him his destiny has been stolen, they need to find a way to retrieve it but first they need to get out of there.

Angel tells him he has to "play to win" as he turns back to the machine.
Gunn realizes they're caught
Gunn pulls Angel up, telling him they are leaving.

As they start for the exit, Spencer and other security enter with Lorne and Fred in tow. They're told they aren't going anywhere.

Angel sits back down at the slot machine and resumes playing.

an unhappy DeMarco
Fred, Gunn and Lorne are escorted into the casino's security room where they face Lee DeMarco. He's a bit put out that Lorne missed his second show, causing him to have to refund the audience's money and comp their rooms to make it up to them.
Lorne makes an offer
Lorne offers to do his bidding but assures him that if he harms anyone else, Lee won't get anything from Lorne ever again.

Lee assures him his friends won't be hurt. They'll die quickly, won't feel a thing.
Jackpot!
Cordelia watches all of this unfolding, lamenting the fact her friends are about to die and she's not allowed to intervene. She doesn't see the point in being all powerful if she can't do something when it's necessary. She ponders the options a moment, then remembers Angel at the slot machine. She considers a way to get Angel into the back room. She thinks on it a moment as the reels on Angel's slot machine fall into place.

The display comes up two bars and a third that settles just above the win line. Cordelia somehow manipulates the third reel into position, causing the jackpot alarms to blare.

Angel is surrounded by casino patrons, congratulating him.

DeMarco hears there's a winnerLorne, Fred, Gunn
Lee orders his men to take Gunn and Fred into the desert and shoot them. He wants Lorne taken along as well, so he can watch.

Spencer approaches and tells DeMarco they have a winner. Everyone stops what they're doing.

Lee looks up at one of the security monitors and sees Angel. He says it's impossible.

Spencer tells him Angel won over $300,000 and a car.

Lorne finds it amusing that someone with no destiny could win so big.

Lee orders the brokers in the room to get back on the phones and orders Angel brought to him.
Angel, DeMarco
When Angel is brought in, Lee demands answers.

Angel looks around the room, noting it looks familiar.

Lee looks at Spencer who punches Angel in the face.

Lee repeats the question. He wants to know how Angel won on the slot machine.

Angel answers simply, he put a quarter in the slot and pulled the handle.
Angel, DeMarco
DeMarco wonders if Angel is playing him.

Angel answers that he has to "play to win."

DeMarco is willing to write off the win as a glitch in the machine. He directs Spencer to pay Angel his winnings "in quarters" and take the others out into the desert.
Angel in vamp face
Gunn starts a fight.

One of the security guys pulls a gun and aims it at him, another has a gun aimed at Fred.

Angel looks at that scene a moment, morphs into vamp face and lays into Lee's men.

Gunn, Fred and Lorne join in the fight.

Lorne picks up a rod of some sort from the floor, notices a large, glowing orb on a stand and heads for it.
DeMarco tries to make a deal
Lee puts himself between Lorne and the orb. He tries to negotiate with him, asking what it will take to make him happy, a bigger suite, fewer shows, he'll give him anything he wants.
destinies stream from the shattered orb
Lorne suggests Lee get out of the way as he slams the orb with the rod.

The orb explodes, knocking Lee out. Ribbons of colored light flow from the remnants of the object as destinies freed stream through the casino reuniting with those who lost them, including Angel.
Angel, Gunn
Angel looks around the room, noting again there's something familiar about it.

Gunn looks at him, says his name.

Angel responds, "You're my friend. I know. I'm not stupid."

They both smile and high five each other.
Angel reminiscing
As the gang leaves the casino, Angel suddenly remembers why the room looked familiar, Elvis and Priscilla's wedding, 1967. He says he wasn't invited, he thinks they thought he was part of the band because he was "drunk and surly."

As he reminisces about that event, the others walk on ahead, not really listening.

returning to the hotel
Gunn, Angel, Fred and Lorne walk up to the door of the Hyperion. Gunn doesn't want any road trips for a while.

Fred just wants to relax in the bathtub.
Angel ponders what happened
Lorne asks Angel if he's okay.

He says he was thinking about how he could have won on that slot machine, it was impossible.

Gunn thinks maybe DeMarco was right, it was just a glitch.

Lorne says maybe Angel just had lady luck on his side.

Angel still doesn't get why he was able to get motivated to fight when he had no destiny, no reason.

Lorne says he was fighting for the futures of his friends, "the people you love are part of your destiny" and nobody can take that away. Lorne offers he'd like to elaborate further but after 5 1/2 hours in the car, he needs to get to the bathroom.

Angel follows Lorne into the hotel, Gunn and Fred lag behind a bit.
