Fantastic story. That last line is great. The torture of Spike by Warren was hard to read, but very well- written. Scary-Dawn was kind of cool, too. I loved Buffy's realization that she had tortured Spike in a similar manner to Warren. That was heartbreaking, but good. Any I loved the Anya & Xander subplot! That was nicely interwoven into the main story. The way this story coaxes emotion out of it's reader is truly inspired. Right at the start, when Spike is first taken by Warren, I found myself raising an eyebrow at the very idea, but by the end I was trembling with fear, just like Spike, each and every time his evil name was mentioned. Seeing Spike's character be broken down and destroyed by the evil of a normal human being is nothing compared to seeing Buffy's loving attempts to rebuild him afterward. The denial that he should deserve her love is heartbreaking, but the fact that she mends him makes this story even more beautiful. Another notable amazing aspect of this story is the character development that takes place. Firstly, Spike, and his fall from powerful master vampire to weak and terrified slave [a particularly good and honest scene is the phonecall with Warren toward the end of the story when he doesn't even dare hang up the phone, though he knows that Warren can't hurt him] I've never seen Spike's character shown in this light before and the difference [not to mention the sympathy felt] was astonishing. Secondly, Buffy's development from self-centred Buffy to open hearted, loving Buffy. The raw emotion you portrayed through her character when she was trying to clean Spike up after his rescue was incredible to read. Memorable. Thirdly, Xander's development from the usual numb-skull he's written as, to the incredibly warm and understanding man he always should have been. I love that he was able to reconcile with Anya after finally becomming a man. And finally, the development from Dawn the girl, to Dawn the woman. The fierce protection she showed over her best friend was amazing, and made the developments in her character all the more believable. It's not often that a piece of fan fiction can so beautifully tie together terrifyingly dark angst and beautifully soft fluff. In my opinion, this story breaks all the usual boundaries and shows a whole new side to ALL of the characters involved. Beautiful. Incredibly well written. And memorable. One of the best fics I have ever read, if not the very best. Good to see Xander coming around. I like stories where he is redeemed instead of staying so narrow minded. And this is one of the best examples of that happening that I've ever read. I was always a little disappointed that Joss gave Warren the schematics to Spike's chip and didn't go anywhere with it. Interesting choice to interrupt Spike's "soul searching" - irifkos ended up giving him a soul in the end anyway. I was alway ambivelent about Spike getting his soul. I kind of thought that the whole point was that he didn't need one. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen Spike further out of character than in "Seeing Red". I just wanted to say (I am sure it has been said to you before), I think that you wrote about the aftermath of the AR very well. Both blaming themselves. Most authors wouls prefer to skip right to the forgiving, but you wrote about working UP TO the forgiving, which is more realistic. I love Dawn in this story, and I have to say, I am mixed about Xander. He pisses me off most of the time, and I can see him doing what he did to Spike with the controller. BUT, at the same time, after Anya showed him what Spike went through, I really did feel sorry for how naieve (SP?) he had been. I can't wait for the next update!
